Validation Risk Across Hierarchical Models, John B. Young

Computational Modeling & Simulation Engineering Theses & Dissertations

Modeling and simulation are applied in a great many methods across a variety of topics. Model developers and users alike have a professional duty to understand the complexities of the tools and methods they are used. Oftentimes, models that have been independently constructed and executed are used to inform one another for an analytic purpose and the compatibility of the models is not always addressed. In the literature, great attention has been paid to model validation. When using models constructively with one another, analysts must understand the bounds of model validity and ensure that the combination of models does not …

An urban logistics system is composed of multiple agents, e.g., shippers, carriers, and distribution centers, etc., and multi-modal networks. The structure of Physical Internet (PI) transportation network is different from current logistics practices, and simulation can effectively model a series of PI-approach scenarios. In addition to the baseline model, three more scenarios are enacted based on different characteristics: shared trucks, shared hubs, and shared flows with other less-than-truckload shipments passing through the urban area. Five performance measures, i.e., truck distance per container, mean truck time per container, lead time, CO2 emissions, and transport mean fill rate, are included in …

Application Of Constraint Force Equation Methodology In Aircraft Stage Separation Dynamics Simulation, Yongji Wang, Bangbang Li, Liu Lei

Journal of System Simulation

Abstract: The separation process of two-stage aircraft can be divided into three periods: lock-up period, constraint period and detachment period. The guide pins have constraint on two stages, which permit only translation in X-axis direction. To avoid the complex force analysis, the guide pins can be regarded as a joint of one degree of freedom. By adding the constraint and freedom equations to traditional separation dynamics equations, a dynamics model based on constraint force equation (CFE) methodology was built. The constraint force and moment can be obtained by solving constraint force equations. The constraint force equation (CFE) methodology was …

It is unclear how data collection operations for surveillance alter the disease portrayal that influenza reported trends attempt to provide during an emergency. This study developed a model that simulates the collection and testing of influenza specimens after an outbreak is declared in Michigan. It performed simulation based optimization to understand which operational factors affect the biases between the growth rates of original and observed influenza incidence trends, and to quantify the predictive power of the influenza incidence trends at different points of data collection. The results show that emergency driven high risk perception increases the reporting, which leads to …

Bmap/G/C Queueing Model With Group Clearance Useful In Telecommunications Systems – A Simulation Approach, Srinivas Chakravarthy, Alexander Rumyantsev

Industrial & Manufacturing Engineering Publications

Queueing models in which customers or messages arrive in batches with inter-arrival times of batches possibly correlated and services rendered in batches of varying sizes play an important role in telecommunication systems. Recently queueing models of BMAP/G/1-type in which a new type of group clearance was studied using embedded Markov renewal process as well as continuous time Markov chain whose generator has a very special structure. In this paper, we generalize these models to multi-server systems through simulation approach. After validating the simulation model for the single server case, we report our simulated results for much more general situations.

Simulating Alternative Tuberculosis Diagnosis Methods In Underdeveloped Countries, Luke Turner May 2019

Simulating Alternative Tuberculosis Diagnosis Methods In Underdeveloped Countries, Luke Turner

Industrial Engineering Undergraduate Honors Theses

Tuberculosis is the deadliest infectious disease in the world; it is especially rampant in underdeveloped countries because they do not have the infrastructure, technology, or funding to properly combat the infection. However, the development of portable point-of-care diagnosis machines can reverse this epidemic as they far surpass conventional laboratory identification. The question now is where to place these machines, which is a difficult decision with a lack of data. Therefore, a flexible simulation model is created to test the implementation of these machines with different countries and configurations. The simulation tests the baseline model and three proposed implementations of the …
