Research on human performance indicates people may discretely shift modes as the difficulty in tasks changes. These modes are referred to as “cognitive control modes.” Cognitive control modes are ways people operate and handle their process of thinking during a series of tasks. However, past work has been confined to subjective reports of these mode changes - objective markers in data of cognitive control modes, which should appear if these mode changes are truly discrete, have not be identified. Neuroimaging, particularly functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), is a rapidly growing research area and has applications ranging from disease classification to understanding neural development. With new advancements in imaging technology, researchers must employ new techniques to accommodate the influx of high resolution data sets. Here, we replicate a new technique: connectome-based predictive modeling (CPM), which constructs a linear predictive model of brain connectivity and behavior. CPM’s advantages over classic machine learning techniques include its relative ease of implementation and transparency compared to “black box” opaqueness and complexity. Thanks to the advances in computing and information technology, analyzing injury surveillance data with statistical machine learning methods has grown in popularity, complexity, and quality over recent years. During that same time, researchers have recognized the limitations of statistical text analysis with limited training data. In response to the two primary challenges for statistical text analysis, dimensionality reduction and sparse data, many studies have focused on improving machine learning algorithms. We consider unconstrained optimization problems where only “stochastic” estimates of the objective function are observable as replicates from a Monte Carlo simulation oracle. In the first study we assume that the function gradients are directly observable through the Monte Carlo simulation. We propose ASTRO, which is an adaptive sampling based trust-region optimization method where a stochastic local model is constructed, optimized, and updated iteratively. ASTRO is a derivative-based algorithm and provides almost sure convergence to a first-order critical point with good practical performance. Critical Pair Identification works as a potential assistive tool for human air traffic controllers by identifying potentially dangerous situations that are not detected by proposed automated separation assurance systems. Nowadays, in distributed storage systems, long tails of responsible time are of particular concern. Modern large companies like Bing, Facebook and Amazon Web Service show that 99.9th percentile response times being orders of magnitude worse than the mean. With the advantages of maintaining high data reliability and ensur- ing enough space eciency, erasure code has become a popular storage method in distributed storage systems. There are currently over 3,200 fixed-base operations (FBOs) conducting business in the United States attempting to meet the demands of FAA Part 91, Part 135, and a limited number of Part 121 operations. With the US economy slowly climbing out of the trough during 2013, the utilization of fixed-base operations has become more attractive and economical to the corporate business and the affluent recreational traveler. Despite the increased flight activities utilizing the services of fixed-base operators, keen competition, rising fuel cost, and the economies of scale recognized by large FBO franchises significantly erode the profitability and sustainability of smaller FBOs. …
