Training workers for specific jobs is receiving much attention in industry. The demand for skilled workers is increasing constantly and as this happens newer and more efficient methods of training are sought In the psychomotor/sensory area. skills that appear to offer a wide amount of transferability are those dealing with fine sensitivity, manual dexterity, and coordination. Even though these skills lend themselves well to training, this area is somewhat deficient in current educational and training programs (Sjogren, 1977, p.23). Presently, on-the-job training is widely used for training workers in the actual tasks they will perform during their job.

Although educators recognize the need for educational experiences that provide students with a basic understanding of the industrial technologies, too often students are not receiving the "hands-on" experiences related to industry. Numerous curriculum programs have been developed to provide the teacher with the necessary instructional materials and also provide students with educational-occupational guidance for the world of work. Yet, many of these programs are not being utilized by industrial arts educators.

The purpose of this study was to (1) determine how many institutions of higher learning (ones listed in the 1972-73 Industrial Teacher Education Directory) offer courses in elementary school industrial arts, (2) to examine the status and content of industrial arts for the elementary school courses offered by these institutions of higher learning for elementary teachers, (3) to determine if they have changed since the last comprehensive study, (4) to compare the content of elementary school industrial arts courses with these standards set up by a National Conference on Elementary School Industrial Arts and other specialists in the area.

This study was undertaken to assist area schools and the State Board of Public Instruction by identifying the industrial training needs for semi-skilled and skilled metal tradesmen.

One of the problems confronting the administrators of the area community colleges, vocational schools, and high schools in Iowa is that of identifying the industrial training needs of manufacturers and business firms in the state. This need identification is necessary so that students trained in occupational curricula in the area-community colleges and vocational schools, and local high schools will find jobs available in their field of specialization when they graduate.

The purpose of this study were to determine: (1) the stated objectives in the more recent industrial-arts courses of study for the junior high school; and (2) the courses or units which should comprise the industrial-arts curriculum of the junior high school as indicated by selected industrial-arts teachers.

The primary purpose of this study was to determine, through the experiences and present status of the graduates and drop-outs who enrolled for industrial arts at the Belle Plaine High School, how effectively the industrial arts program had met their vocational as well as their general needs after leaving high school.

Further purposes of the study were 1) to evaluate the present industrial arts program in the school; and (2) to recommend changes which might enable the industrial arts department to meet the needs of youth more effectively.
