Dissertations

This dissertation presents in-depth investigation of turbo-coded CDNIA systems in packet data communication terminology. It is divided into three parts; (1) CDMA with hybrid FEC/ARQ in deterministic environment, (2) CDMA with hybrid FEC/ARQ in random access environment and (3) an implementation issue on turbo decoding.

As a preliminary, the performance of CDMA with hybrid FEC/ARQ is investigated in deterministic environment. It highlights the practically achievable spectral efficiency of CDMA system with turbo codes and the effect of code rates on the performance of systems with MF and LMMSE receivers, respectively. For given ensemble distance spectra of punctured turbo codes, an …

Deposition And Characterization Of Magnetron Sputtered Bcc Tantalum, Anamika Patel Jan 2003

Deposition And Characterization Of Magnetron Sputtered Bcc Tantalum, Anamika Patel

Dissertations

The goal of this thesis was to provide scientific and technical research results for developing and characterizing tantalum (Ta) coatings on steel substrates deposited by DC magnetron sputtering. Deposition of tantalum on steel is of special interest for the protection it offers to surfaces, e.g. the surfaces of gun barrels against the erosive wear of hot propellant gases and the mechanical damage caused by the motion of launching projectiles. Electro-plated chromium is presently most commonly used for this purpose; however, it is considered to be carcinogenic in its hexavalent form. Tantalum is being investigated as non-toxic alternative to chromium and …

Robust And Efficient Video/Image Transmission, Xi Min Zhang Jan 2003

Robust And Efficient Video/Image Transmission, Xi Min Zhang

Dissertations

The Internet has become a primary medium for information transmission. The unreliability of channel conditions, limited channel bandwidth and explosive growth of information transmission requests, however, hinder its further development. Hence, research on robust and efficient delivery of video/image content is demanding nowadays.

Three aspects of this task, error burst correction, efficient rate allocation and random error protection are investigated in this dissertation. A novel technique, called successive packing, is proposed for combating multi-dimensional (M-D) bursts of errors. A new concept of basis interleaving array is introduced. By combining different basis arrays, effective M-D interleaving can be realized. It has …

Vlsi Design Of Stability Routing Protocol For Sensors In Wireless Mobile Ad-Hoc Networks, Vishnu M. Mandava

Theses

This thesis gives a detailed description of the Application specific integrated circuit (ASIC) design of Stability routing protocol for sensors in mobile ad-hoc networks. The Stability routing protocol is based on the signal strength and position components during data transmission while considering sensors in an ad-hoc network. A general ad-hoc network has unpredictable and variable mobility patterns therefore the signal strength criteria is adopted for routing. Signal strength criteria has been proved to be efficient for communication between the mobile nodes without any data loss. In this thesis an architecture for a processor implementing stability routing protocol for effective communication …

Normal Form Analysis Of Stressed Power Systems: Incorporation Of Svc Models, E Barocio, Arturo Roman Messina

A. R. Messina

In this paper a comprehensive analytical technique based on normal form theory and symbolic computer algebra is proposed for the analysis of non-linear inter-area oscillations in stressed power systems that incorporate the operation of Static VAR Compensators (SVCs). A second-order representation of the power system is derived that considers the explicit representation of synchronous machines and multiple SVCs in the state representation. On the basis of this model, normal form theory is used to study non-linear power system behaviour following large disturbances. The proposed approach is general and may be extended to include other FACTS devices. A simplified 4- machine, …

Design Criteria And Optical Characteristics Of One-Dimensional Photonic Crystals Based On Periodically Grooved Silicon, Vladimir Tolmachev, Tatiana Perova, Kevin Berwick

Articles

Photonic bandgap (PBG) regions have been calculated for periodically grooved Si structures, acting as a one-dimensional photonic crystal. The wavelength range of the PBG as a function of the ratio (DSi/A) is presented, where DSi is the width of the Si walls and A is the grooved silicon lattice constant. The influence of the parameter DSi, the refractive index of the space between the Si walls and the number of structure periods, m, on the forming of PBG regions is discussed. A good correlation between the calculated and the experimentally observed …

Study Of Structure And Quality Of Different Silicon Oxides Using Ftir And Raman Microscopy, C. Moore, T. S. Perova, B. Kennedy, Kevin Berwick, I. I. Shaganov, R. A. Moore

Articles

In this work, SiO2 and fluorine and phosphorous doped SiO2 thin films are investigated using FTIR and Raman techniques. FTIR spectroscopy was performed at normal and oblique incidence of the probe beam in transmission and reflection modes. The effect of polarisation and angle of incidence of the probe beam is examined for the case of reflection mode. Infrared spectra taken from doped oxides show that the structure changes with the passage of time. Alternate methods to calculate the thickness of the doped film are therefore discussed. Infrared spectra of electron beam evaporated oxides give valuable information on their …

Dynamically Biased Radio Frequency Power Amplifier, Tom Twomey Jan 2003

Dynamically Biased Radio Frequency Power Amplifier, Tom Twomey

Theses

With the current trend in mobile communications towards more complex modulation schemes to enhance spectral efficiency, the design of RF power amplifiers is the subject of considerable interest and research. The newer more spectrally efficient modulation schemes require a much higher level of linearity due to the non-constant level of their signal envelope. A variable envelope signal would in non-linear amplifiers lead to unacceptable levels of distortion. Linear amplifiers solve this problem at the cost of significant loss of efficiency. With the evolution towards more spectrally efficient modulation schemes, the trade off between linearity and power efficiency has become more …

Modern Control Techniques For Induction Machines In High-Performance Adjustable-Speed Drives, Pat Cronin Jan 2003

Modern Control Techniques For Induction Machines In High-Performance Adjustable-Speed Drives, Pat Cronin

Theses

Induction Motors (IM’s) are increasingly being considered for and used in high-performance motor drive (HPMD) systems. Their application has only gained acceptance since the 1970’s with the advent of vector control, microprocessors and improvements in power converter technology. D.C. motors were traditionally the preferred choice in HPMD systems. The main reasons for IM acceptance in HPMD systems are ruggedness, durability, low maintenance, cost, and small size by comparison with D.C. motors.

Alternating current asynchronous motors of the IM type are considered to be the universal workhorses of the manufacturing industry. It has been estimated that they are used in seventy …

Design For Signal Integrity In High Frequency, High Density Circuit Boards, Juan Manuel Talavera Martinez Jan 2003

Design For Signal Integrity In High Frequency, High Density Circuit Boards, Juan Manuel Talavera Martinez

Theses

The electronics market is continually seeking fast and small high performance products. The clock frequency in computer systems is often above 2GHz and new generations of laptops have considerably reduced in size. These features make printed circuit board (PCB) design more difficult than in the past.

This thesis is an investigation of the current design of high speed PCB. The complexity of this type of circuit makes the designer needs an extensive knowledge of the techniques used to generate a reliable signalling, in other words, signal integrity. To achieve this objective, the design community has to overcome several problem related …
