Revisiting The Fresnel Coefficients For Uniform Plane Wave Propagation Across A Nonchiral, Reciprocal And Chiral, Nonreciprocal Interface, Monish Ranjan Chatterjee, Sumit Nema

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

The problem of EM wave propagation in non-reciprocal chiral media has been studied by several investigators. In a recent approach, a dual-transform technique has been developed to study the problem of such propagation under paraxial and slow-envelope variation conditions.

In this paper, we first outline some of the results obtained using the dual transform technique for arbitrary boundary conditions within the left boundary of a semi-infinite, non-reciprocal chiral medium for a uniform plane wave, and a fundamental Gaussian-profiled beam. Next, we explore the problem of a uniform EM wave incident at an oblique angle at an interface between a reciprocal, …

Iván Esteban Villalón Turrubiates

A comparison between two different methods of multiplication of two 8-bit numbers is presented. This methods are the Booth’s algorithm and the algorithm proposed by Kiamal Z. Pekmestzi. The general objective is to show the benefits and the advantages obtained if it’s used one of this algorithms over the other. This multipliers have low circuit complexity permitting high-speed operations and the interconnections of the cells are regular. This is the reason why the results shown was obtained using VHDL realization on a FPGA XC4010XL by Xilinx.

New Full Wave Theory For Plane Wave Scattering By A Rough Dielectric Surface - The Fictitious Current Method, Byung-Tae Yoon May 2003

New Full Wave Theory For Plane Wave Scattering By A Rough Dielectric Surface - The Fictitious Current Method, Byung-Tae Yoon

Dissertations

A new full wave method for scattering of plane waves from a rough dielectric surface is developed. This new theory begins by postulating a zero-order field solution which does not satisfy Maxwell's source-free field equations. The zero-order field, however, is made to satisfy Maxwell's source equations. This is done by introducing a fictitious volume current distribution. Since the original problem does not possess a volume current distribution, its introduction represents a measure of the error in the postulated zero-order solution. To improve this solution, the fictitious volume current distribution is cancelled by the introduction of a second fictitious current distribution, …

Sparse Matrix Product Implementation On Field Programmable Gate Arrays (Epgas), Amit Mahendra Sheth May 2003

Sparse Matrix Product Implementation On Field Programmable Gate Arrays (Epgas), Amit Mahendra Sheth

Theses

If dense matrix multiplication algorithms are used with sparse matrices, they can result in a large number of redundant calculations, as numerous elements in sparse matrices are zero valued, thus available resources and time may be wasted. The algorithm discussed here aims to take advantage of the sparseness of the matrices by multiplying only nonzero elements.

The NIOS development board from Altera is used for implementing the above algorithm. First a sequential program in the C programming language is downloaded onto the FPGA and run by the NIOS soft-processor. Then the same board is also used for a parallel implementation …

Spatio-Temporal Correlation Models For Indoor Mimo Channels, Kaustubha Raghukumar

Theses

Accurate modeling of the spatio-temporal cross-correlation between the subchannels of a multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) channel is an important prerequisite of multi-element antenna system design. In this thesis, a new model for indoor MIMO channels is proposed, and a closed form expression for the spatio-temporal cross-correlation function is derived. This new analytical correlation expression includes many physical parameters of interest such as the angle-of-arrivals at the base station and the user, the associated angle spreads, and other parameters, in a compact form. Comparison of this model with narrowband indoor MIMO data collected at Brigham Young University exhibits the utility of the …

Optimal Beam Splitters For The Division-Of-Amplitude Photopolarimeter, R. M.A. Azzam, A. De

Electrical Engineering Faculty Publications

Optimal optical parameters of the beam splitter that is used in the division-of-amplitude photopolarimeter are determined. These are (1) 50%–50% split ratio of the all-dielectric beam splitter, (2) differential phase shifts in reflection and transmission Δr and Δt that differ by ±π/2, and (3) ellipsometric parameters (ψr, ψt)= (27.368°, 62.632°) or (62.632°, 27.368°). It is also shown that for any nonabsorbing beam splitter that splits incident unpolarized light equally, the relationship ψrt=π/2 is always satisfied.

Design And Analysis Of A Wide Loop-Bandwidth Rf Synthesizer Using Ring Oscillator For Dect Receiver, Md. Hafijur Rahman

Masters Theses

Wireless communication devices including cordless phones and modern digital cellular systems (DCSs) use portable transceiver systems. The frequency synthesis of this type of transceiver system is done using a phase-locked loop oscillator. Traditional on-chip implementation of a complete phase-locked loop using a ring type voltage controlled oscillator contributes higher noise at the output. An alternative architecture, phase-locked loop (PLL) with wide loop-bandwidth, is proposed in this research to suppress the noise from the traditional ring oscillator. The proposed PLL is amendable to on-chip integration as well as commercially suitable for a Digital Enhancement Cordless Telephone (DECT) system which needs flexible …

A new two-layer design is developed and presented. The …

Development Of Variable Slope Piecewise-Based Brown Symbols For Application To Nonlinear Ambiguity Suppression, John Kurian Mar 2003

Development Of Variable Slope Piecewise-Based Brown Symbols For Application To Nonlinear Ambiguity Suppression, John Kurian

Theses and Dissertations

In 1962, Palermo used two conjugate Linear Frequency Modulated (LFM) pulses to demonstrate a Non-linear Ambiguity Suppression (NLAS) technique to reduce ambiguous energy in radar returns. Using conjugate LFM pulse coding does not readily extend to larger symbol families and thus is severely limited for M-channel (M> 2) NLAS applications. Larger families of optimal mutually dispersible codes with bigger time bandwidth products are needed to achieve the desired M-fold range ambiguity reduction. Using correlation function the time duration as an optimization metric, the recently proposed Brown's theorem formulates a deterministic process for designing optimal mutually dispersible symbol sets of arbitrary …

Gaussian Mixture Reduction Of Tracking Multiple Maneuvering Targets In Clutter, Jason L. Williams

Theses and Dissertations

The problem of tracking multiple maneuvering targets in clutter naturally leads to a Gaussian mixture representation of the Provability Density Function (PDF) of the target state vector. State-of-the-art Multiple Hypothesis Tracking (MHT) techniques maintain the mean, covariance and probability weight corresponding to each hypothesis, yet they rely on ad hoc merging and pruning rules to control the growth of hypotheses.

Network Lifetime Extension, Power Conservation And Interference Suppression For Next Generation Mobile Wireless Networks, Amer Catovic Jan 2003

Network Lifetime Extension, Power Conservation And Interference Suppression For Next Generation Mobile Wireless Networks, Amer Catovic

Dissertations

Two major focus research areas related to the design of the next generation multihop wireless networks are network lifetime extension and interference suppression. In this dissertation, these two issues are addressed.

In the area of interference suppression, a new family of projection multiuser detectors, based on a generalized, two-stage design is proposed. Projection multiuser detectors provide efficient protection against undesired interference of unknown power, while preserving simple design, with closed-form solution for error probabilities. It is shown that these detectors are linearly optimal, if the interference power is unknown.

In the area of network lifetime extension, a new approach to …

Joint Buffer Management And Scheduling For Input Queued Switches, Dequan Liu Jan 2003

Joint Buffer Management And Scheduling For Input Queued Switches, Dequan Liu

Dissertations

Input queued (IQ) switches are highly scalable and they have been the focus of many studies from academia and industry. Many scheduling algorithms have been proposed for IQ switches. However, they do not consider the buffer space requirement inside an IQ switch that may render the scheduling algorithms inefficient in practical applications.

In this dissertation, the Queue Length Proportional (QLP) algorithm is proposed for IQ switches. QLP considers both the buffer management and the scheduling mechanism to obtain the optimal allocation region for both bandwidth and buffer space according to real traffic load. In addition, this dissertation introduces the Queue …
