A New Method Of Producing High Strength Oil Palm Shell Lightweight Concrete, Zamin Jumaat Dec 2010

A New Method Of Producing High Strength Oil Palm Shell Lightweight Concrete, Zamin Jumaat

Zamin Jumaat

This paper presents a new method to produce high strength lightweight aggregate concrete (HSLWAC) using an agricultural solid waste, namely oil palm shell (OPS). This method is based on crushing large old OPS. Crushed OPS are hard and have a strong physical bond with hydrated cement paste. The 28 and 56 days compressive strength achieved in this study were about 53 and 56 MPa, respectively. Furthermore, it was observed that it was possible to produce grade 30 OPS concrete without the addition of any cementitious materials. Compared to previous studies, significantly lower cement content was used to produce this grade …

Information Sharing In Capacity Constrained Supply Chains, Lauren Davis, Russell King, Thom Hodgson, Wenbin Wei Dec 2010

Information Sharing In Capacity Constrained Supply Chains, Lauren Davis, Russell King, Thom Hodgson, Wenbin Wei

Dr. Lauren B Davis

We present a modelling approach for quantifying the value of information in supply chains using Markov decision processes (MDP). The case where information sharing occurs is modelled using a completely observable MDP. A restricted observation MDP is used to model the case where no information sharing occurs. We illustrate the use of this framework on a two-stage capacity-constrained supply chain consisting of a supplier and a retailer. We quantify the value of information sharing in this setting and construct several performance measures to identify the benefits to both the retailer and supplier as a result of the information sharing partnership.

A Novel Biodiesel And Glycerol Carbonate, Yasar Demirel, N. Nguyen Dec 2010

A Novel Biodiesel And Glycerol Carbonate, Yasar Demirel, N. Nguyen

YASAR DEMIREL

Crude glycerol is the byproduct of biodiesel production plant and the economic value of glycerol may affect the profitability of the biodiesel production plant. As the production rate of bioglycerol increases, its market values drop considerably. Therefore, conversion of bioglycerol into value-added products can reduce the overall cost, hence, leading to a more economical biodiesel production plant. In a direct carboxylation reaction, CO2 reacts with glycerol to produce glycerol carbonate and water. This study presents a direct comparison of the economic analysis of the conventional biodiesel production plant and the possible next generation biodiesel-glycerol carbonate production plant. At the end …

Detecting Learning Moment-By-Moment, Ryan Baker, Adam Goldstein, Neil Heffernan Dec 2010

Detecting Learning Moment-By-Moment, Ryan Baker, Adam Goldstein, Neil Heffernan

Ryan S.J.d. Baker

Intelligent tutors have become increasingly accurate at detecting whether a student knows a skill, or knowledge component (KC), at a given time. However, current student models do not tell us exactly at which point a KC is learned. In this paper, we present a machine-learned model that assesses the probability that a student learned a KC at a specific problem step (instead of at the next or previous problem step). We use this model to analyze which KCs are learned gradually, and which are learned in “eureka” moments. We also discuss potential ways that this model could be used to …

Comparing Learners' Affect While Using An Intelligent Tutor And An Educational Game, Ryan Baker, Ma.Mercedes Rodrigo Dec 2010

Comparing Learners' Affect While Using An Intelligent Tutor And An Educational Game, Ryan Baker, Ma.Mercedes Rodrigo

Ryan S.J.d. Baker

We compare the affect associated with students learning from an intelligent tutoring system, Aplusix, and a game, Math Blaster 9-12, covering very similar mathematical content. Quantitative field observations of student affect were conducted in classrooms in private schools in the Philippines. Students experienced large amounts of positive affect in both environments. It has been hypothesized that educational games will lead to better affect than other forms of educational software, but it was found that students experienced more positive affect (specifically, engaged concentration) and less negative affect (specifically, boredom) in the intelligent tutor than in the game, though there was a …

Comparing Extreme Programming And Waterfall Project Results, Feng Ji, Todd Sedano Dec 2010

Comparing Extreme Programming And Waterfall Project Results, Feng Ji, Todd Sedano

Todd Sedano

Waterfall and Extreme Programming are two software project methods used for project management. Although there are a number of opinions comparing the two methods regarding how they should be applied, none have used project data to clearly conclude which one is better. In this paper, we present the results of a controlled empirical study conducted at Carnegie Mellon University in Silicon Valley to learn about the effective transition from traditional development to agile development. We conducted a comparison research against these two approaches. Multiple teams were assigned a project; some used Waterfall development, others used Extreme Programming. The purpose of …

Separation Distance Reduction In Mimo Systems Using End-Fire Antenna Arrays, Amean Al_Safi Dec 2010

Separation Distance Reduction In Mimo Systems Using End-Fire Antenna Arrays, Amean Al_Safi

Amean S Al_Safi

The main problem in Multiple Input-Multiple Output (MIMO) systems is the separation distance between antennas which must be greater than or equal to half wavelength. Satisfying this separation is difficult or impossible especially at mobile communication, therefore this paper study the capability to reduce these separation distance by using End-Fire antenna arrays. Each antenna at the transmitter and receiver side is replaced by a set of antennas work as an array with a radiation pattern directed toward the axes of the arrays. The separation between elements in these arrays is fixed at quarter wavelength in order to have one main …

Switching Energy-Delay Of All Spin Logic Devices, Srikant Srinivasan Dec 2010

Switching Energy-Delay Of All Spin Logic Devices, Srikant Srinivasan

Srikant Srinivasan

A recent proposal called all spin logic (ASL) proposes to store information in nanomagnets that communicate with spin currents in order to construct spin based digital circuits. We present a coupled magnetodynamics/spin-transport model for ASL devices that is based on established physics and is benchmarked against available experimental data. This model is used to show the linear dependence of switching energy and quadratic dependence of energy-delay of ASL devices on the number of Bohr magnetons comprising a nanomagnet. A scaling scheme that could lower the energy-delay of spin-torque switching while maintaining thermal stability is discussed.

Evaluating The Impact Of Patient Arrival Patterns In The Performance Of Appointment Scheduling Rules, Alcides Santander-Mercado, Jose Zayas-Castro, Laila Cure, Ali Yalcin Dec 2010

Evaluating The Impact Of Patient Arrival Patterns In The Performance Of Appointment Scheduling Rules, Alcides Santander-Mercado, Jose Zayas-Castro, Laila Cure, Ali Yalcin

Laila Cure

This paper evaluates the ability of commonly used Appointment Scheduling Rules (ASRs) in smoothing the effect of environmental factors in the performance of an outpatient scheduling system. ASRs have been widely implemented in outpatient clinics to improve performance measures such as staff idle time, patient waiting time, and facility congestion. However, the successful implementation of an ASR depends on its ability in dealing with the environmental factors affecting the system. Factors such as no-shows, variability of consultation times, patient unpunctuality, walk-in patient arrivals and the number of admitted patients per session affect the performance of the clinics in terms of …

Bio-Hydrogen Production From Thin Stillage Using Conventional And Acclimatized Anaerobic Digester Sludge, Noha Nasr, Elsayed Elbeshbishy, Hisham Hafez, George Nakhla, M. Hesham El Naggar Dec 2010

Bio-Hydrogen Production From Thin Stillage Using Conventional And Acclimatized Anaerobic Digester Sludge, Noha Nasr, Elsayed Elbeshbishy, Hisham Hafez, George Nakhla, M. Hesham El Naggar

Noha El-Sayed Nasr

To assess the viability of biohydrogen production from thin stillage, a comparative evaluation of anaerobic digester sludge (ADS) and acclimatized anaerobic digester sludge (AADS) for biohydrogen production over a wide range of S0/X0 ratio (0.5e8 gCOD/gVSS) was performed. A maximum hydrogen yield of 19.5 L H2/L thin stillage was achieved for the AADS while tests with ADS achieved a maximum yield of only 7.5 L H2/L thin stillage. The optimum range of S0/X0 ratio for hydrogen production was found to be 1 to 2 gCOD/gVSS using conventional ADS and 3 to 6 gCOD/gVSS using AADS. The biomass specific hydrogen production …

Combining Dynamic Stretch And Tunable Stiffness To Probe Cell Mechanobiology In Vitro., Kristen Billiar, Angela Throm Quinlan, Leslie Sierad, Andrew Capulli, Laura Firstenberg

Kristen L. Billiar

Cells have the ability to actively sense their mechanical environment and respond to both substrate stiffness and stretch by altering their adhesion, proliferation, locomotion, morphology, and synthetic profile. In order to elucidate the interrelated effects of different mechanical stimuli on cell phenotype in vitro, we have developed a method for culturing mammalian cells in a two-dimensional environment at a wide range of combined levels of substrate stiffness and dynamic stretch. Polyacrylamide gels were covalently bonded to flexible silicone culture plates and coated with monomeric collagen for cell adhesion. Substrate stiffness was adjusted from relatively soft (G′ = 0.3 kPa) to …

Moral Machines?, Michael Pritchard Dec 2010

Moral Machines?, Michael Pritchard

Michael Pritchard

Wendell Wallach and Colin Allen’s Moral Machines: Teaching Robots Right From Wrong (Oxford University Press, 2009) explores efforts to develop machines that, not only can be employed for good or bad ends, but which themselves can be held morally accountable for what they do—artificial moral agents(AMAs). This essay is a critical response to Wallach and Allen’s conjectures. Although Wallach and Allen do not suggest that we are close to being able to create full-fledged AMAs, they do talk seriously about making incremental progress in the direction of creating them (even if we never fully succeed). However, there are …

Business Strategy And Capital Allocation Optimization Model For Practitioners, Aiyin Jiang, Maged Malek, Adel El-Safty Dec 2010

Business Strategy And Capital Allocation Optimization Model For Practitioners, Aiyin Jiang, Maged Malek, Adel El-Safty

Aiyin Jiang

Construction engineering companies usually provide a variety of services. To be competitive, companies have to organize their operations strategically based on market demands within the limitations of their own resources. Optimization of these resources is of vital importance for these companies. Historically, decisions on resource allocations to various construction market segments were made exclusively based on intuitive judgment. In previous literature, the proposed models on capital allocation place emphasis on formulating cash-flow forecasting and planning strategy on project level. However, existing technologies and established mathematical methods provide a sound base for quantitative analysis on company-level business strategy and capital allocation. …
