The Effect Of Flowable Fill On The Lateral Resistance Of Driven-Pile Foundations, Dustin David Miner
The Effect Of Flowable Fill On The Lateral Resistance Of Driven-Pile Foundations, Dustin David Miner
Theses and Dissertations
Flowable fill was used to strengthen the soft soil surrounding piles and behind the pile cap. The flowable fill placed beneath the pile cap surrounding the piles showed no appreciable increase in lateral resistance, this was partially due to the fact that the flowable fill placed had an unconfined compressive strength of 30 psi. Flowable fill was also used to replace a 12 ft wide, 6 ft thick, and 6 ft deep zone consisting of an average 475 psf clay that was adjacent to a 9-pile group in 3x3 pile configuration capped with a 9 ft x 9 ft x …
Prediction Of Fluid Viscosity Through Transient Molecular Dynamic Simulations, Jason Christopher Thomas
Prediction Of Fluid Viscosity Through Transient Molecular Dynamic Simulations, Jason Christopher Thomas
Theses and Dissertations
A novel method of calculating viscosity from molecular dynamics simulations is developed, benchmarked, and tested. The technique is a transient method which has the potential to reduce CPU requirements for many conditions. An initial sinusoidal velocity profile is overlaid upon the peculiar velocities of the individual molecules in an equilibrated simulation. The transient relaxation of this initial velocity profile is then compared to the corresponding analytical solution of the momentum equation by adjusting the viscosity-related parameters in the constitutive equation that relate the shear rate to the stress tensor. The newly developed Transient Molecular Dynamics (TMD) method was tested for …
Hydrometallurgical Process For Extraction Of Metals From Electronic Waste-Part I: Material Characterization And Process Option Selection, Zeljko J. Kamberovic
Hydrometallurgical Process For Extraction Of Metals From Electronic Waste-Part I: Material Characterization And Process Option Selection, Zeljko J. Kamberovic
Zeljko J Kamberovic
Used electronic equipment became one of the fastest growing waste streams in the world. In the past two decades recycling of printed circuit boards (PCBs) has been based on pyrometallurgy, higly polluting recycling technology whic causes a variety of environmental problems. The most of the contemporary research activities on recovery of base and precious metals from waste PCBs are focused on hydrometallurgical techniques as more exact, predictable and easily controlled. In this paper mechanically pretrated PCBs are leached with nitric acid. Pouring density, percentage of magnetic fraction, particle size distribution, metal content and leachability are determined using optical microscopy, atomic …
Exploring Stress Overshoot Phenomenon Upon Startup Deformation Of Entangled Linear Polymeric Liquids, Yangyang Wang, Shi-Qing Wang
Exploring Stress Overshoot Phenomenon Upon Startup Deformation Of Entangled Linear Polymeric Liquids, Yangyang Wang, Shi-Qing Wang
College of Polymer Science and Polymer Engineering
This work explores the picture associated with stress overshoot during sudden continual (i.e., startup) external deformation of entangled polymeric liquids and proposes a specific scaling form to depict the intermolecular interactions responsible for chain deformation. Following a previously proposed idea that the stress overshoot in startup deformation is a signature of yielding, we search for ingredients that should go into the description of the force imbalance at the yield point and show that the expression for the intermolecular locking force f(iml), derived from the characteristics associated with the yield point, can be tested against experiment. New rate-switching experiments support the …
Nature Of Steady Flow In Entangled Fluids Revealed By Superimposed Small Amplitude Oscillatory Shear, Pouyan E. Boukany, Shi-Qing Wang
Nature Of Steady Flow In Entangled Fluids Revealed By Superimposed Small Amplitude Oscillatory Shear, Pouyan E. Boukany, Shi-Qing Wang
College of Polymer Science and Polymer Engineering
We carry out a systematic investigation into steady-state shear behavior of six entangled solutions based on a superposition of continuous shear and small amplitude oscillatory shear (SAOS). During steady shear in the shear thinning regime, the superimposed SAOS frequency sweep measurements reveal characteristics of viscous liquids, e. g., terminal dynamics, on the experimental time scale of the reciprocal shear rate. The residual entanglement network retains the same level of elastic stiffness as the equilibrium system does. Consistent with the convective constraint release idea, chains in the network are forced to pass around each other as they must do so to …

Numerical Prediction Of Exhaust Fan-Tone Noise From High-Bypass Aircraft Engines, Anupam Sharma, Simon K. Richards, Trevor H. Wood, Chingwei Shieh
Anupam Sharma
The ability to accurately predict fan noise is important in designing and optimizing high-bypass aircraft engines for low noise emissions. In this paper, a prediction methodology for exhaust fan-tone noise analysis is described and validated against various canonical test cases and NASA Source Diagnostic Test data (Heidelberg, L. J., "Fan Noise Source Diagnostic Test-Tone Modal Structure Results," NASA TM-2002-211594, 2002.). The prediction process consists of solving Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equations to compute the fan wake and calculating the acoustic response of the outlet guide vanes to the fan wake using linearized Euler equations. Very good agreement is observed between the numerical …
Thermocapillary Effects In Driven Dewetting And Self-Assembly Of Pulsed Laser-Irradiated Metallic Films, Mikhail Khenner
Thermocapillary Effects In Driven Dewetting And Self-Assembly Of Pulsed Laser-Irradiated Metallic Films, Mikhail Khenner
Mikhail Khenner
A mathematical model for the evolution of pulsed laser-irradiated, molten metallic films has been developed using the lubrication theory. The heat transfer problem that incorporates the absorbed heat from a single laser beam or the interfering laser beams is solved analytically. Using this temperature field, we derive the 3D long-wave evolution PDE for the film height. To get insights into dynamics of dewetting, we study the 2D version of the evolution equation by means of a linear stability analysis and by numerical simulations. The stabilizing and destabilizing effects of various system parameters, such as the reflectivity, the peak laser beam …
Seismic Analysis Of Buildings To Recorded Motions, Rakesh K. Goel
Seismic Analysis Of Buildings To Recorded Motions, Rakesh K. Goel
Civil and Environmental Engineering
This investigation focused on developing an improved understanding of challenges associated with computation of nonlinear response of three-dimensional building to recorded ground motions, and if the base shear estimated from recorded motions, denoted as “estimated base shear” in this report, is an accurate indicator of the true base shear. For this purpose, three-dimensional models of two buildings – one reinforced-concrete building and one steel building – are developed in OpenSees and Perform3D¬. The analysis of these models included pushover analysis for lateral force distribution proportional to the first mode in each of the two principle directions, and nonlinear response history …
Cost Of Quality In The Construction Industry, Philip L. Barlow
Cost Of Quality In The Construction Industry, Philip L. Barlow
Construction Management
The construction industry needs to decrease its costs due to nonconformance by implementing an objective model for analyzing the excessive cost of poor quality and the overall savings realized from good quality. Direct cost estimates from rework in commercial building construction average about 5%. A simple calculation based on U.S. construction industry expenditures of $1.246 trillion in 2007 reveals that $62 billion is wasted just on the direct cost construction rework alone! The term quality can be applied in many different ways to various aspects of the construction process. This paper proposes a model which helps illustrate how the various …

Modeling The Effects Of Pelleting On The Logistics Of Distillers Grains Shipping, Kurt A. Rosentrater, Elif Kongar
Kurt A. Rosentrater
The energy security needs of energy importing nations continue to escalate. It is clear that biofuels can help meet some of the increasing need for energy. Theoretically, these can be produced from a variety of biological materials, including agricultural residues (such as corn stover and wheat straw), perennial grasses, legumes, algae, and other biological materials. Currently, however, the most heavily utilized material is corn starch. Industrial fuel ethanol production in the US primarily uses corn, because it is readily converted into fuel at a relatively low cost compared to other biomass sources. The production of corn-based ethanol in the US …
Fundamental Mechanical-Behavior Studies Of Annealed And Nano-Particle-Strengthened Nickel-Based Alloys Using In-Situ Neutron-Diffraction Experiments, E-Wen Huang
Doctoral Dissertations
This dissertation addresses two issues concerning the fundamental mechanical behavior of the nickel-based superalloys: (1) the deformation mechanisms and (2) the nano-precipitate-strengthening effect. The precipitates are known to fortify the mechanical behavior of the metallic alloys. These precipitates can interact with the matrix upon the applied load. While the precipitation strengthening has been facilitated for many purposes, this research puts forward the mechanistic understanding.
The dissertation considers the thesis that Deformation Mechanisms and Nanoprecipitate Strengthening and their effects on the microstructure are central to the mechanical behavior of nickel-based superalloys.
The experimental methods employed in this research are in-situ neutrondiffraction …

Publications (E)
This paper provides an overview of the challenges associated with wind integration and summarizes the findings of the wind integration studies conducted over the course of the past five years. We begin with an overview of the approximate time frames used in grid operations. We then describe how wind integration studies are conducted, discuss the results on wind integration costs and grid impacts from these grid integration studies, and assess some of the grid planning and operation changes that may be necessary to incorporate higher levels of wind generation. We close with several conclusions.

Congestion And Price Prediction In Locational Marginal Pricing Markets Considering Load Variation And Uncertainty, Rui Bo
Doctoral Dissertations
This work investigates the prediction of electricity price and power transmission network congestions under load variation and uncertainty in deregulated power systems. The study is carried out in three stages.
In the first stage, the mathematical programming models, which produce the generation dispatch solution, the Locational Marginal Price (LMP), and the system statuses such as transmission congestions, are reviewed. These models are often referred to as Optimal Power Flow (OPF) models, and can be categorized into two major groups: Alternating Current OPF (ACOPF) and Direct Current OPF (DCOPF). Due to the convergence issue with the ACOPF model and the concern …

Study Of Take-Up Velocity In Enhancing Tensile Properties Of Aligned Electrospun Nylon 6 Fibers, Johnny F. Najem
Mechanical Engineering Faculty Research
The variation of both the tensile properties and thermal properties of aligned electrospun fibers with the take-up velocity (TUV) of disc collector has not been widely investigated due to the difficulty of handling aligned nanofibers and measuring low loads. In this thesis, 25% of nylon 6 was dissolved in formic acid and then electrospun into fibers and the fibers were aligned using a rotating disc collector. We evaluated the tensile and thermal properties, average fiber diameter, crystallinity, crystalline morphology, molecular and crystalline orientation of aligned electrospun nylon 6 nanofibers as a function of TUV based on a disc collector. It …

Effects Of Overload And Underload On Internal Strains/Stresses And Crack Closure During Fatigue-Crack Propagation, Soo Yeol Lee
Effects Of Overload And Underload On Internal Strains/Stresses And Crack Closure During Fatigue-Crack Propagation, Soo Yeol Lee
Doctoral Dissertations
The overload and/or underload occurring during constant-amplitude fatiguecrack growth result in the retardation and/or acceleration in the crack-growth rate, making it difficult to predict the crack-propagation behavior and fatigue lifetime. Although there have been numerous investigations to account for these transient crackgrowth behavior, the phenomena are still not completely understood.
Neutron and X-ray diffraction, and electric-potential measurements were employed to investigate these transient crack-growth micromechanisms; gain a thorough understanding of the crack-tip deformation and fracture behaviors under applied loads; and establish a quantitative relationship between the crack-tip-driving force and crack-growth behavior. Five different fatigue-crack-growth experiments (i.e., fatigued, tensile overloaded, compressive …
Localized Deformation In Metallic Glasses At The Ambient Temperature, Shuangxi Song
Localized Deformation In Metallic Glasses At The Ambient Temperature, Shuangxi Song
Doctoral Dissertations
Metallic glasses have many unusual properties, such as extremely high strength and large elastic limit. However, they are also brittle, failing in a catastrophic manner, as a result of the formation of highly localized shear bands at room temperature. Such flow localization has been attributed to the influence of strain softening or local heating, or a combination of both, which leads to the local drop in viscosity and, finally, the runaway of the shear band.
In this thesis, a novel method was developed for in situ observation of the localized shear processes. The inhomogeneous deformation of metallic glasses at room …
A Study Of Polymer Electrolyte Membranes And Associated Interfacial Systems Via Molecular Dynamics Simulations, Junwu Liu
Doctoral Dissertations
The development of novel polymer electrolyte membrane (PEM) materials which operate at high temperature (i.e. > 100˚C) and low humidity conditions and efficiently transport protons has been a major focus for PEM fuel cell technology. The motivation behind a high temperature PEM fuel cell is based on the fact that, at high temperature, the catalysts used in the fuel cell are more active and less susceptible to poisoning due to impurities in the feed stream. The challenge lies in the fact that as the temperature is increased, the membrane loses water and its ability to transport protons. The successful design and …
