Influence Evaluation On Near-Road Concentrations Of Pm2.5 During Covid-19 Pandemic, Marcos Alan Banda Morales

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

SARS-CoV-2, also known as COVID-19, was discovered in Wuhan, China in late 2019and spread rapidly worldwide in 2020. The COVID-19 pandemic and its quarantine periods influenced the number of people using their vehicles and the number of miles traveled, which correspondingly influenced the air quality of urban areas. The influence of the restrictions caused by the quarantine period on air quality differs from location to location. Previous research accounted for countries, but no research was done at the state level individually. This research attempts to evaluate the transportation-related air quality during the COVID-19 pandemic period using data from the Texas …

Optimized Learning Using Fuzzy-Inference-Assisted Algorithms For Deep Learning, Miroslava Barua Dec 2022

Optimized Learning Using Fuzzy-Inference-Assisted Algorithms For Deep Learning, Miroslava Barua

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

For years, researchers in Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Deep Learning (DL) observed that performance of a Deep Learning Network (DLN) could be improved by using larger and larger datasets coupled with complex network architectures. Although these strategies yield remarkable results, they have limits, dictated by data quantity and quality, rising costs by the increased computational power, or, more frequently, by long training times on networks that are very large. Training DLN requires laborious work involving multiple layers of densely connected neurons, updates to millions of network parameters, while potentially iterating thousands of times through millions of entries in a big …

Online/Incremental Learning To Mitigate Concept Drift In Network Traffic Classification, Alberto R. De La Rosa

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

Communication networks play a large role in our everyday lives. COVID19 pandemic in 2020 highlighted their importance as most jobs had to be moved to remote work environments. It is possible that the spread of the virus, the death toll, and the economic consequences would have been much worse without communication networks. To remove sole dependence on one equipment vendor, networks are heterogeneous by design. Due to this, as well as their increasing size, network management has become overwhelming for network managers. For this reason, automating network management will have a significant positive impact. Machine learning and software defined networking …

Determination Of Oxidation-Reduction Potential And Iron Chemistry For Solutions Generated During The Hydrometallurgical Extraction Of Copper, Jiahao Xu

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

Oxidation-reduction potential (ORP) based on iron chemistry is one of the key operating parameters during the hydrometallurgical extraction of copper. A novel ORP equation was developed previously only based on the variables of temperature and nominal ferric/ferrous ratio to predict the redox potential of the quaternary H2SO4-Fe2(SO4)3-FeSO4-H2O system. However, its applicability in more complex acidic iron sulfate solutions during the hydrometallurgical extraction of copper with different temperatures, acidic concentration, cupric concentration, nominal ferric/ferrous ratio, and total and l iron concentration has not been extended and validated. This work evaluates the applicability of novel oxidation-reduction potential equation in the H2SO4-Fe2(SO4)3-FeSO4-H2O and …

Exploring The Effect Of Environmental Degradation On The Shape Memory Properties Of Polymers, Jorge Mario Avila Dec 2022

Exploring The Effect Of Environmental Degradation On The Shape Memory Properties Of Polymers, Jorge Mario Avila

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

A key detriment of the use of polymers by our society is the negative effect this material class has had on the environment. A category of polymers known as shape memory polymers (SMP)s have the ability to return to a programmed original shape form after deformation to a temporary shape by using stimuli such as temperature, electrical pulses and even magnetism. The shape memory effect allows for some polymers to heal if they are damaged. This ability to heal means that components made from these materials can be reused rather than thrown away if they are damaged. The work presented …

Using Ultrasonication For The Improvement Of Grade And Recovery In Molybdenum Sulfide Flotation, Wayne Alexander Campbell Dec 2022

Using Ultrasonication For The Improvement Of Grade And Recovery In Molybdenum Sulfide Flotation, Wayne Alexander Campbell

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

Experimentation was performed on molybdenite slurry by using ultrasonication to elucidate the effects of ultrasonic-induced bubble cavitation on the grade, recovery, and gangue reduction during small-scale flotation tests and was followed by a topographical analysis of quartz particles using SEM. Ultrasonic waves at 20-80 kHz that propagate through a liquid medium cause microbubbles to form, grow, and implode. The cavitation bubble's implosion causes brief extreme local conditions where temperatures can reach 5,000 K and pressures of 1,000 bar. The resulting microjets create mechanical and chemical changes to the system and were directed at improving flotation dynamics in these experiments. Through …

Generation Of Phase Transitions Boundaries Via Convolutional Neural Networks, Christopher Alexis Ibarra Dec 2022

Generation Of Phase Transitions Boundaries Via Convolutional Neural Networks, Christopher Alexis Ibarra

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

Accurate mapping of phase transitions boundaries is crucial in accurately modeling the equation of state of materials. The phase transitions can be structural (solid-solid) driven by temperature or pressure or a phase change like melting which defines the solid-liquid melt line. There exist many computational methods for evaluating the phase diagram at a particular point in temperature (T) and pressure (P). Most of these methods involve evaluation of a single (P,T) point at a time. The present work partially automates the search for phase boundaries lines utilizing a machine learning method based on convolutional neural networks and an efficient search …
