Pioneering Concepts For 3d Electromagnetics, Cesar Valle Dec 2022

Pioneering Concepts For 3d Electromagnetics, Cesar Valle

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

This work introduces two paradigm changing concepts that will push electromagnetics (EM) to the third dimension. The first of that work involves the introduction of the conformal Spatially Variant Lattice (SVL) algorithm that can conform any periodic structure onto arbitrary curvature. The algorithms robustness is confirmed by conforming a frequency selective surface (FSS) onto an extreme paraboloid, proving the algorithms robustness on high sloping surfaces. Three FSSs were made in total; a standard flat FSS, a projected FSS, and a FSS made through the conformal SVL algorithm. Measured results are shown and match well to simulation.Secondly, in the world of …

Characterization Of 3d Printed Parts Containing Integrated Functionality Via Ultrasonically Embedded Wires, David Abraham Sepulveda Aug 2022

Characterization Of 3d Printed Parts Containing Integrated Functionality Via Ultrasonically Embedded Wires, David Abraham Sepulveda

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

Material extrusion additive manufacturing has been widely adopted because it offers freedom of design, which allows complex geometry fabrication, and rapid prototyping. Interest in producing components with integrated functionality allowed forms of hybrid manufacturing to be developed such as the Multi3D system. This system produces parts with embedded components by combining additive, subtractive, soldering, dispensing, and embedding techniques. However, this involves pausing the printing process (which takes place in a controlled environment) and exposing it to ambient temperature where embedding takes places. In this research, the effect of embedding parts with 24 AWG copper for improved functionality was quantified mechanically. …

Design Of A Hemi-Anechoic Chamber For Acoustic Testing Of Hearing Devices And Development Of Custom-Designed 3d Printed Pinnae For Accurate Representation Of The Anatomical Frequency Response, Hector Hugo Estrada Medinilla Aug 2022

Design Of A Hemi-Anechoic Chamber For Acoustic Testing Of Hearing Devices And Development Of Custom-Designed 3d Printed Pinnae For Accurate Representation Of The Anatomical Frequency Response, Hector Hugo Estrada Medinilla

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

Sound localization is the capacity to identify the general location from which a sound is originating. The primary anatomical feature responsible for the ability to localize sound is the external portion of the ear, also known as the auricle or pinna. This faculty is significantly hindered when the ear is obstructed, as is the case with hearing protection devices (HPD), which act as a barrier between sound waves and the ear canal. In the case of electronic HPDs, certain frequencies are entirely filtered out by a digital sound processor (DSP) while the remaining frequencies are delivered directly into the ear …

Hybrid 3d Printing Demonstrated By Arbitrary 3d Meandering Transmission Lines, Ubaldo Robles Jan 2018

Hybrid 3d Printing Demonstrated By Arbitrary 3d Meandering Transmission Lines, Ubaldo Robles

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

This Dissertation focuses on the automation of multi-material direct write three-dimensional (3D) manufacturing of arbitrary metal-dielectric structures. The technology was demonstrated by manufacturing 3D meandering interconnects and transmission lines (TLs). Manufacturing 3D functional electronics with multiple materials required pushing the current state of 3D printing (3DP) technology to utilize simultaneous multi-material processes combined with sophisticated slicing and bonding under one process. Multi material 3DP is known as hybrid 3DP. This research pioneered the process for producing meandering transmission lines, starting with design and manufacturing, using hybrid 3DP through micro-dispensing and fuse deposition modeling. The research starts by 3DP magnetic and …

Development And Characterization Of Novel Materials For The Advancement Of Additive Manufacturing By Material Extrusion 3d Printing, Jose Gilberto Siqueiros Jan 2018

Development And Characterization Of Novel Materials For The Advancement Of Additive Manufacturing By Material Extrusion 3d Printing, Jose Gilberto Siqueiros

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

The development of additive manufacturing technologies has been under the spotlight from the past decade due to its enormous potential to disrupt current manufacturing processes. Material extrusion 3D printing (ME3DP) is the most common type of additive manufacturing technology as it experienced an exponential growth after the expiration of the fused deposition modeling patent filed in 1989 by Scott Crump. The large interest behind this technology is generated from the capacity to create complex shapes, rapid prototyping, relatively ease of use, low cost, and high accessibility. The gradual evolution of material extrusion 3D printing calls to become a technology ordinarily …

Design And Development Of A Foil Application Tool For A Foil Embedding Process In The Multi3d Manufacturing System, Betty Elizabeth Mckenzie

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

Additive manufacturing (AM) encompasses different technologies, including material extrusion 3D printing, a technology commonly referred to as fused deposition modeling (FDM), which is the focus of the work described in this manuscript. Additive manufacturing is a growing technology with many applications in numerous fields from the air force to medical offices. FDM is a process that uses thermoplastics, in this case polycarbonate (PC), where the PC is heated and selectively dispensed in a layer-by-layer process to create a 3D printed part. Currently, FDM systems have advantages over subtractive manufacturing or machining because cavities and other components (e.g., microchips, valves, and …

Numerical Calculation Of Spatially Variant Anisotropic Metamaterial, Asad Ullah Hil Gulib

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

3D printing, or additive manufacturing, is rapidly evolving into a mainstream manufacturing technology that is creating new opportunities for electromagnetics and circuits. 3D printing permits circuits to fully utilize the third dimension allowing more functions in the same amount of space and allows the devices to have arbitrary form factors. 3D printing is letting us discover new physics that is not possible in standard 2D circuits and devices. However, evolving electromagnetics and circuits into three dimensions introduces some serious problems like thermal management, interference, and mutual coupling between the components which degrades performance and hurts signal integrity.

Metamaterials are engineered …

Defeating Anisotropy In Material Extrusion 3d Printing Via Materials Development, Ángel Ramón Torrado Pérez Jan 2015

Defeating Anisotropy In Material Extrusion 3d Printing Via Materials Development, Ángel Ramón Torrado Pérez

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

Additive Manufacturing technologies has been in continuous development for more than 35 years. Specifically, the later denominated Material Extrusion Additive Manufacturing (MEAM), was first developed by S. Scott Crump around 1988 and trademarked later as Fused Deposition Modeling (FDM). Although all of these technologies have been around for a while, it was not until recently that they have been more accessible to everyone. Today, the market of 3D printers covers all ranges of price, from very specialized, heavy and expensive machines, to desktop printers of only a few cubic inches in volume. Until recently, FDM technology had remained somewhat stagnant …

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

Micro-dispensing allows electric circuits to be "3D printed," which can be used to give 3D printed systems electronic and electromagnetic functionality. The focus of this thesis is using micro-dispensing to fabricate capacitors and inductors. 3D printed impedance elements are capable of being more easily embedded, can be used to create structural electronics, and will have extensive applications in antennas, metamaterials, frequency selective surfaces, and more. This is the first known effort to print and measure impedance elements by micro-dispensing which holds great potential for manufacturing multi-material devices.
