A New Application For Fine Ground Rubber In The Control Of Odors From Livestock Manure Storage Structures, Lakshmi Koppolu, Richard K. Koelsch, Dennis D. Schulte, Crystal Powers, Dwaine Bundy
Department of Biological Systems Engineering: Conference Presentations and White Papers
The purpose of this project was to quantify the odor and gas emission benefits of a fine ground rubber cover on laboratory scale manure storage units and to evaluate the ability of a fine ground rubber cover applied to a commercial swine manure storage unit to remain intact and functional over an extended period of time. A three-inch cover of fine ground rubber reduced odors by 77 to 99 percent from the manure storage tanks over a six-week period. However, consistent reductions of NH3 emissions were not observed and H2S emissions from all manure storage treatments were …

In 1996, an interim record of decision was issued for the 300-FF-5 Operable Unit on the Hanford Site in southeast Washington State. The record of decision specified the interim remedy as (1) continued monitoring of groundwater and (2) institutional controls to restrict groundwater use. This record of decision was based on a remedial investigation that suggested levels of uranium would decrease with time because of natural geochemical and hydrologic processes. A prediction was made that concentrations of uranium would decrease to the proposed drinking water standard or lower (20 μg/L) in 3 to 10 years from 1993. This prediction has …

The Phosphoglycolate Phosphatase Gene And The Mutation In The Phosphoglycolate Phosphatase-Deficient Mutant (Pgp1-1) Of Chlamydomonas Reinhardtii, Kensaku Suzuki, Hidenobu Uchida, Tarlan G. Mamedov
Papers in Biochemical Engineering
The sequences of the phosphoglycolate phosphatase (PGPase) gene Pgp1 and the 5′-upstream region from Chlamydomonas reinhardtii wildtype 2137 and the pgp1-1 mutant N142 that lacks the activity of PGPase (PGP1) were determined. The comparison revealed the alteration of a G to A at position 98 relative to the start codon. This destroyed the “GT” splice donor site at the beginning of the first intron of this gene, resulting in an extension of the first exon to 49 translatable codons followed by a stop codon, containing the codons corresponding to whole transit peptide for the chloroplast stroma and the first four …

In December 2004 ACUTA and WTC sent a survey to 768 ACUTA primary members to determine what issues were important on campuses today and what issues respondents felt will be of importance in the next few years. Questions related to management, strategy, infrastructure, technology, organization, polity, and funding. One of the most interesting observations is that the current and five-year rankings are nearly identical- today's concerns are also your concerns for the future. Here are the highlights of our findings:
A cluster of five management issues were rated very close to the same importance. This cluster included developing a vision …

Giant Electroresistance In Ferroelectric Tunnel Junctions, Mikhail Ye Zhuravlev, Renat F. Sabirianov, Sitaram Jaswal, Evgeny Y. Tsymbal
Materials Research Science and Engineering Center: Faculty Publications
The interplay between the electron transport in metal-ferroelectric-metal junctions with ultrathin ferroelectric barriers and the polarization state of a barrier is investigated. Using a model which takes into account screening of polarization charges in metallic electrodes and direct quantum tunneling across a ferroelectric barrier, we calculate the change in the tunneling conductance associated with the polarization switching. We find the conductance change of a few orders of magnitude for metallic electrodes with significantly different screening lengths. This giant electroresistance effect is the consequence of a different potential profile seen by transport electrons for the two opposite polarization orientations.

Effective Electromechanical Moduli Of Ferroelectric Ceramics With Fiber Textures, Y.C. Zhou, J. Liu, Jiangyu Li
Nebraska Center for Materials and Nanoscience: Faculty Publications
In this letter, we report the predictions on the effective piezoelectric coefficients and electromechanical coupling factors of ferroelectric ceramics BaTiO 3 and Pb(Mg 1/3Nb 2/3)O 3–PbTiO 3 (PMN-PT) with various fiber textures, including [001], [011], and [111], using a two-scale micromechanical model that accounts for microstructural phenomena at both domain and grain levels. It was observed that for BaTiO 3 the [011] texture is optimal with highest d 31 and d 33, while for PMN-PT [001] texture is optimal despite the fact that [011]-oriented single-crystalline PMN-PT has higher d 32 than that of [001]-oriented PMN-PT single …

Materials Research Science and Engineering Center: Faculty Publications
We investigate the electronic structure and magnetic properties of GdN as a function of unit cell volume. Based on the first-principles calculations of GdN, we observe that there is a transformation in the conduction properties associated with the volume increase: first from half-metallic to semimetallic, then ultimately to semiconducting. We show that applying stress can alter the carrier concentration as well as mobility of the holes and electrons in the majority spin channel. In addition, we found that the exchange parameters depend strongly on lattice constant, thus the Curie temperature of this system can be enhanced by applying stress or …

Positive Spin Polarization In Co/Alo3 /Co Tunnel Junctions Driven By Oxygen Adsorption, Kirill D. Belashchenko, Evgeny Y. Tsymbal, Ivan I. Oleynik, Mark Van Schilfgaarde
Materials Research Science and Engineering Center: Faculty Publications
Using a first-principles Green's function technique, we study spin-dependent tunneling in two model realizations of (111) fcc Co/Al3/Co tunnel junctions assuming O-terminated crystalline epitaxy in the corundum structure. For the first model, which includes 3 O atoms at the interface, the tunneling current is polarized negatively, just as for the clean Co surface. The second model contains additional oxygen atoms inside large pores at each interface. Located at the three-fold hollow adsorption sites, these O atoms bind very strongly to Co. This bonding creates an interface band in the majority-spin channel which strongly enhances the tunneling current in this channel. …

Jecp/Holz — An Interactive Computer Program For Simulation Of Holz Patterns, Xingzhong Li
Nebraska Center for Materials and Nanoscience: Faculty Publications
In the present work, an interactive computer program for simulation of the HOLZ line patterns, JECP/HOLZ, is reported. A feature of this program is the integration of the simulation of the HOLZ reflections and the HOLZ (curved and straight) lines, which is interactive with respect to changes of the lattice parameter, the accelerator voltage, the zone axis, and the beam tilt. The program can be used as a teaching aid for students as well as a tool for scientists working on electron diffraction experiments.
Chromatographic Purification Of Mabs With Non-Affinity Supports, Anuradha Subramanian
Chromatographic Purification Of Mabs With Non-Affinity Supports, Anuradha Subramanian
Papers in Biotechnology
The introduction of new protein-based therapeutics such as monoclonal antibodies (MAbs), MAb-based vaccines, growth factors and plasma proteins implies the need to study, characterize, and purify. The separation step is likely to be a bottleneck and cost-effective technology will be needed to rectify it. The currently prevalent matrices for chromatographic separation of immunoglobulins (Igs) are based on Protein A or its recombinant versions (Protein G). They display excellent selectivity and specificity, but are expensive. A Protein A matrix costs $8,000 to 12,000 per L-resin. The typical production column volume is 100 L. The million-dollar matrix is far more expensive than …

Uv-Vis -Infrared Optical And Afm Study Of Spin-Cast Chitosan Films, W H. Nosal, D. W. Thompson, Sabyasachi Sarkar, Anuradha Subramanian, John A. Woollam, L Yan
Papers in Biotechnology
Optical properties OS spin-cast chitosan films have been determined in the infrared, visible, and ultraviolet region or the spectrum ~tsing spectroscopic ellipsometry. Optical constants for the Vvis-near IR spectra from 130 to 1700 nm were determined using Cauchy dispersion forms com-bined with Lorentzian oscillator models in the absorptive shorler wavelength regions. Infrared ndex of refraction and extinction coefficients from 750 to 4000cm-' were determined using ellip-sometric data fits to dispersion models based on harmonic oscillators. This modeling determined that optical onisotropy was present and measurable over all wavelength regions of ellipsomctric data. To obtain information on the micro- and nano-scale …
Stability Of Transport And Rate Processes [Review], Yaşar Demirel
Stability Of Transport And Rate Processes [Review], Yaşar Demirel
Papers in Thermal Mechanics
About fifty years ago, the Turing instability demonstrated that even simple reaction-diffusion systems might lead to spatial order and differentiation, while the Rayleigh-Bénard instability showed that the maintenance of nonequilibrium might be the source of order in fluids subjected to a thermodynamic force above a critical value. Therefore, distance from global equilibrium in the form of magnitude of a thermodynamic force emerges as another constraint of stability; some systems may enhance perturbations, and evolve to highly organized states called the dissipative structures after a critical distance on the thermodynamic branch. Although the kinetics and transport coefficients represent short-range interactions, chemical …

Substrate-Mediated Gene Delivery For Assessment Of Signal Transduction Pathways In Cancer Cells, Angela K. Pannier, Zain Bengali, Eric A. Ariazi, V. Craig Jordan, Lonnie D Shea
Department of Biological Systems Engineering: Conference Presentations and White Papers
Gene delivery has the potential to be used in diagnostic applications, specifically to investigate cellular signal transduction pathways responsible for disease. Analysis of multiple pathways or genes in a parallel format can be achieved using a transfected cell array, a high throughput approach to correlate gene expression with functional cell responses, based on gene delivery from a substrate that supports cell adhesion. Substrate-mediated gene delivery functions by self-assembling DNA with nonviral vectors, resulting in positively charged complexes that can interact with a biomaterial or substrate. Cells cultured on the substrate are exposed to elevated DNA concentrations within the local microenvironment, …

Finite Element Analysis Of Covered Microstents, Linxia Gu, Swadeshmukul Santra, Robert A. Mericle, Ashok V. Kumar
Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering: Faculty Publications
Currently available neuroendovascular devices are inadequate for effective treatment of many wide-necked or fusiform intracranial aneurysms and intracranial carotid-cavernous fistulae (CCF). Placing a covered microstent across the intracranial aneurysm neck and CCF rent could restore normal vessel morphology by preventing blood flow into the aneurysm lumen or CCF rent. To fabricate covered microstents, our research group has developed highly flexible ultra thin (~150 μm) silicone coverings and elastomerically captured them onto commercially available metal stents without stitching. Preliminary in vivo studies were conducted by placing these covered microstents in the common carotid artery of rabbits. The feasibility of using covered …

Is There A Green Chemistry Approach For Leaching Gold?, Jarnes L. Hendrix
Papers in Sustainable Mining
Over the past fifteen years there has been significant interest in the concepts of sustainable development and mining. Many governments, mining con~panies and non-government organizations have embraced the concepts of sustainable development. One concept generated from the ideas stemming from sustainable mining is that of 'green gold'. Similar to sustainable mining, green gold's meaning is defined by the originator.

Optical Characterization Of Porous Alumina From Vacuum Ultraviolet To Mid-Infrared, Daniel W. Thompson, Paul G. Snyder, Leon Castro, Li Yan, Prasuna Kaipa, John A. Woollam
Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Faculty Publications
Porous alumina was fabricated and optically characterized over a wide spectral range. Layers were formed electrochemically in oxalic acid solution from 10-μm-thick aluminum films evaporated onto silicon wafers. The layer formation was monitored with in situ spectroscopic ellipsometry in the visible and near-infrared wavelength range to accurately determine the thickness and dielectric functions. Anisotropy due to the columnar nature of the porous structure was determined using optical modeling. The porous alumina layer was found to have a small but significant absorption tail throughout the visible region. Atomic force microscopy and scanning electron microscopy were used throughout the process to assess …

Modeling Of Immunoglobulin Uptake By N,N,N′,N′-Ethylenediaminetetramethylenephosphonic Acid-Modified Zirconia Particles Under Static And Dynamic Conditions, Sabyasachi Sarkar, Anuradha Subramanian
Papers in Biotechnology
A matrix developed from N,N,N′,N′-ethylenediaminetetramethylenephosphonic acid-modified zirconia beads (further referred to as r_PEZ); 25–38 μm in diameter and with a pore size of 22 ± 3 nm, was utilized for the separation of immunoglobulins (Igs). r_PEZ has been shown to bind to various Igs originating from a wide variety of species. To understand the mechanisms controlling the uptake of Igs by r_PEZ, static protein uptake experiments were carried out. The protein uptake profiles were further modeled with a kinetic rate constant model. Individual studies were undertaken for human immunoglobulin A, G and M (HIgA, HIgG and HIgM). The kinetic rate …

Influence Of Nitrogen Growth Pressure On The Ferromagnetic Properties Of Cr-Doped Aln Thin Films, Jun Zhang, Xingzhong Li, B. Xu, David J. Sellmyer
Nebraska Center for Materials and Nanoscience: Faculty Publications
We report the magnetic properties of Cr-doped AlN thin films grown by reactive magnetron sputtering under various nitrogen pressures. Ferromagnetism is observed up to the highest temperature measured, 400 K, and shows strong dependence on the Cr concentration and, especially, the nitrogen growth pressure. By varying the nitrogen pressure during film growth, the magnetic properties of the films can be changed while keeping a constant Cr concentration. The ferromagnetism is enhanced in the films that were grown at low nitrogen pressures and thus nitrogen deficient, suggesting an important role of defects in the ferromagnetism of this material.

Across the United States and abroad, innovative producers, processors, trade organizations and others in the agricultural sector are exploring the promise of Environmental Management Systems (EMS) to improve their environmental and business performance. An Environmental Management System or EMS helps farmers develop their own, personal strategies for reducing environmental risk on their operations by integrating environmental management considerations into production management decisions. It is a voluntary, flexible approach and is based on a producer's own sense of how best to manage an operation.
Partnerships for Livestock Environmental Management Systems is a 4-year project to explore the potential of livestock Environmental …
Role Of Interface Bonding In Spin-Dependent Tunneling (Invited), Evgeny Y. Tsymbal, Kirill D. Belashchenko
Role Of Interface Bonding In Spin-Dependent Tunneling (Invited), Evgeny Y. Tsymbal, Kirill D. Belashchenko
Materials Research Science and Engineering Center: Faculty Publications
Measured positive values of the spin polarization of the tunneling current from 3d ferromagnetic metals are commonly explained by the dominant s-electron contribution based on symmetry considerations for bulk materials, ignoring the influence of the interfaces. In this work, three different models are considered which suggest that the spin polarization is primarily determined by the electronic and atomic structures of the ferromagnet/insulator interfaces rather than by the bulk properties. A simple tight-binding model demonstrates that the existence of interface states and their contribution to the tunneling current depend on the degree of hybridization between the orbitals on metal …

Determination Of Dynamic Delamination Toughness Of A Graphite-Fiber/Epoxy Composite Using Hopkinson Pressure Bar, Xiangfa Wu, Yuris A. Dzenis
Department of Engineering Mechanics: Faculty Publications
Modified dynamic three-point-bending and compact shearing test configurations based on Hopkinson pressure bar (HPB) and crack detection gage (CDG) (Vishay Intertechnology, Inc) were used for the determination of the dynamic mode I and mode II delamination-initiation toughness of a unidirectional graphite-fiber/epoxy composite made of P7051S-20Q-1000 prepregs (Toray Composites America). The transient loading history was recorded precisely by the HPB installed with a highresolution digital oscilloscope, and the crack initiation and delay time were captured using the CDG. By means of dynamic finite-element analysis (FEA) of the impact processes with the loading history and crack initiation time as input, the critical …

Magnetic Behavior Of Sm-Co-Based Permanent Magnets During Order/Disorder Phase Transformations, Shampa Aich, J. Kostogorova, Jeffrey E. Shield
Nebraska Center for Materials and Nanoscience: Faculty Publications
The structural transformation from the metastable disordered TbCu7-type SmCo7 structure to the equilibrium ordered Th2Zn17-type Sm2Co17 structure was revealed by x-ray diffraction analysis using Reitveld refinement. The magnetic properties depended strongly on the stage of the transformation, as the coercivity strongly depended on the annealing temperature. The as-solidified alloy in the TbCu7-type structure had a coercivity of 4 kOe, which increased to greater than 9 kOe. The coercivity decreased to around 5 kOe as the transformation neared completion upon annealing at higher temperatures. The magnetization processes were also strongly influenced …

Texture Formation In Fept Thin Films Via Thermal Stress Management, P. Rasmussen, X. Rui, Jeffrey E. Shield
Nebraska Center for Materials and Nanoscience: Faculty Publications
The transformation variant of the fcc to fct transformation in FePt thin films was tailored by controlling the stresses in the thin films, thereby allowing selection of in- or out-of-plane c-axis orientation. FePt thin films were deposited at ambient temperature on several substrates with differing coefficients of thermal expansion relative to the FePt, which generated thermal stresses during the ordering heat treatment. X-ray diffraction analysis revealed preferential out-of-plane c-axis orientation for FePt films deposited on substrates with a similar coefficients of thermal expansion, and random orientation for FePt films deposited on substrates with a very low coefficient of …
