Antiplane Surface Acoustic Waves Propagating In Elastic Half-Space Coated With An Anisotropic Laminate, Xiangfa Wu, Yuris A. Dzenis

Department of Engineering Mechanics: Faculty Publications

Dispersion relation of antiplane surface acoustic waves (SAWs) propagating in elastic half-space coated with an anisotropic laminate was determined explicitly by means of Stroh's formalism within the subsonic range, where is no energy leakage into the substrate. During the procedure, the governing dynamic equation in each anisotropic layer and the displacement–traction continuity at interfaces were exactly satisfied by Stroh's functions. Explicit algebraic equation was derived for determining the dispersion relation. As an example, the wave number vs. phase velocity diagram for steel half-space coated with a graphite-fiber/epoxy laminate with a [± 45°/0°2] lay-up was demonstrated. The given method …

Substrate-Mediated Delivery From Self-Assembled Monolayers: Effect Of Surface Ionization, Hydrophilicity, And Patterning, Angela K. Pannier, Brian C. Anderson, Lonnie D Shea Sep 2005

Substrate-Mediated Delivery From Self-Assembled Monolayers: Effect Of Surface Ionization, Hydrophilicity, And Patterning, Angela K. Pannier, Brian C. Anderson, Lonnie D Shea

Department of Biological Systems Engineering: Papers and Publications

Gene transfer has many potential applications in basic and applied sciences. In vitro, DNA delivery can be enhanced by increasing the concentration of DNA in the cellular microenvironment through immobilization of DNA to a substrate that supports cell adhesion. Substrate-mediated delivery describes the immobilization of DNA, complexed with cationic lipids or polymers, to a biomaterial or substrate. As surface properties are critical to the efficiency of the surface delivery approach, selfassembled monolayers (SAMs) of alkanethiols on gold were used to correlate surface chemistry of the substrate to binding, release, and transfection of non-specifically immobilized complexes. Surface hydrophobicity and ionization were …

Effects Of Long-Term Wastewater Application On Chemical Properties And Phosphorus Adsorption Capacity In Soils Of A Wastewater Land Treatment System, Cong Hu, Tian Zhang, Yong Huang, Mohamed F. Dahab, Rao Surampalli

Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering: Faculty Publications

The buildup of phosphorus (P) in the soil is a major factor limiting the operating life of a wastewater land treatment system. In this study, we evaluated changes of chemical properties, P profiles, and adsorption isotherms in the soils of a Muskegon wastewater land treatment system, which has received wastewater for ~30 years. It was found that the pH in the 15-cm topsoil increased from ~5-6 in 1973 to ~7.4-7.8 in 2003; a large amount of salt (e.g., Ca, Mg) in wastewater was adsorbed by the soil; the soil Al content (either exchangeable or oxalate extractable) decreased, while the oxalate-extractable …

Crosslinked Chitosan: Its Physical Properties And The Effects Of Matrix Stiffness On Chondrocyte Cell Morphology And Proliferation, Anuradha Subramanian, Hsin-Yi Lin Aug 2005

Crosslinked Chitosan: Its Physical Properties And The Effects Of Matrix Stiffness On Chondrocyte Cell Morphology And Proliferation, Anuradha Subramanian, Hsin-Yi Lin

Papers in Biotechnology

Chitosan [<(1-4)-2 amino-2-deoxy-d-glucose], the natural polyaminosaccharide derived from N-deacetylation of chitin [<(1-4)-2 acetamide-2-deoxy-d-glucose], has been shown to possess attractive biological and cell interactive properties. Recently chitosan and chitosan analogs have also been shown to support the growth and continued function of chondrocytes. In the present study, chitosan substrates are crosslinked with a func-tional diepoxide (1,4 butanediol diglycidyl ether) to alter its mechanical property, and the viability and proliferation of the canine articular chondrocytes seeded on the crosslinked surface are further assayed. Of interest is the impact of substrate stiffness on the growth and proliferation of articular canine chondrocytes. Cross linked scaffolds were also sub-jected to degradation by chitosanase to examine the impact of cross linking on enzyme- assisted degradation. The hydrophilicity and compression modulus of the crosslinked sur-faces were measured via contact-angle measurements and compression tests, respec-tively. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and fluorescent staining were used to ob-serve the proliferation and morphology of chondrocyte cells on noncrosslinked and crosslinked surfaces. The crosslinked chitosan was found to be nontoxic to chondrocytes and more hydrophilic. Its compression modulus and stiffness increased, which may im-prove the scaffold resistance to wear and in vivo shrinkage once implanted. The in-creased stiffness also seemed to serve as an additional mechanical stimulus to promote chondrocyte growth and proliferation. The cell morphology on crosslinked scaffolds seen by SEM and fluorescent stain was the typical chondrocytic rounded shape. The method proposed provides a nontoxic way to increase the mechanical strength of the chitosan scaffolds.

Papers in Biochemical Engineering

A recombinant C-terminus heavy chain fragment from botulinum neurotoxin serotype E (BoNT/E) is proposed as a vaccine against the serotype E neurotoxin. This fragment, rBoNTE(Hc), was produced intracellular in Pichia pastoris GS115 by a three-step fermentation process, i.e., glycerol batch phase and a glycerol fed-batch phase to achieve high cell densities, followed by a methanol fed-batch induction phase. The rBoNTE(Hc) protein was purified from the soluble fraction of cell lysates using three ion-exchange chromatography steps (SP Sepharose Fast Flow, Q Sepharose Fast Flow, Sp Sepharose High Performance) and polished with a hydrophobic charge induction chromatography step (MEP HyperCel). Method development …

Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering: Faculty Publications

A high-impact, energy-absorbing vehicle barrier system generally includes a substantially rigid outer containment wall coupled via cable restraint assemblies with an energy-absorbing inner impact wall, and energy-absorbing cartridges strategically positioned between the impact wall and containment-wall: The impact wall is constructed of a number of rectangular tubes coupled with one another to presents a substantially smooth, uniform surface to passing vehicles. The energy-absorbing cartridges generally consist of a number of foam sheets which compress and crush between the containment wall and impact wall to absorb energy from an errant vehicle striking the face of the impact wall, while the deflection …

Electrohydrodynamic Instability Of Thin Conductive Liquid Films, Xiangfa Wu, Yuris A. Dzenis Aug 2005

Electrohydrodynamic Instability Of Thin Conductive Liquid Films, Xiangfa Wu, Yuris A. Dzenis

Department of Engineering Mechanics: Faculty Publications

This paper considers the effect of surface charges on the surface instability of thin conductive liquid films. A characteristic relation is obtained for determining the wave number of the fastest growing mode as a function of surface tension, dispersive van der Waals force, and electrostatic tractions exerted by the film surface charges. Two natural length scales of the microsystem are further introduced to account for the coupling effects on the dewetting pattern development. The present results can be used for controlled surface pattern modulation in a spinodal-dewetting scenario via amplification of surface waves of selected modes.

Experimental Determination Of Probabilistic Edge-Delamination Strength Of A Graphite–Fiber/Epoxy Composite, Xiangfa Wu, Yuris A. Dzenis

Department of Engineering Mechanics: Faculty Publications

Probabilistic edge-delamination strength of a thermosetting polymer composite was studied experimentally in this work. During the procedure, by means of edge-delamination tensile test, the graphite–fiber/epoxy laminate made of unidirectional Toray P7051S- 20Q-1000 prepregs with an optimized lay-up of [122/–122/02]S was used for examining its probabilistic distributions of the edgedelamination onset stress and the ultimate tensile strength. Acoustic emission (AE) equipment and optical microscope were utilized to capture the edge-delamination initiation and characterize the failure modes during delaminating. Fractographical analysis based on scanning electron microscope (SEM) was conducted for the characterization of the microscopic …

Magnetization Reversal In Particulate L10 Nanostructures, Jian Zhou, Ralph Skomski, Kory D. Sorge, David J. Sellmyer

Nebraska Center for Materials and Nanoscience: Faculty Publications

Magnetization processes in particulate L10 FePt nanostructures are investigated by model calculations and numerical simulations. The systems considered include anisotropic nanograins embedded in non-magnetic matrix; randomly oriented nanoclusters embedded in a C matrix, and nanocomposites of FePt particles in a semi-hard matrix. The reversal mechanisms depend on both intra- and intergranular features. Quasi-coherent rotation dominates the reversal in weakly-coupled granular magnets, but interface imperfections yield a disproportionately strong coercivity reduction. Strong intergranular exchange leads to a transition to a discrete pinning regime, which is accompanied by a coercivity maximum.

Phase Transformations And Thermodynamic Properties Of Nanocrystalline Fept Powders , J. Lyubina, O. Gutfleisch, Ralph Skomski, K.-H. Müller, L. Schultz Aug 2005

Phase Transformations And Thermodynamic Properties Of Nanocrystalline Fept Powders , J. Lyubina, O. Gutfleisch, Ralph Skomski, K.-H. Müller, L. Schultz

Nebraska Center for Materials and Nanoscience: Faculty Publications

The solid state reactions and structural evolution in nanocrystalline FePt powders during mechanical ball milling at 77 K and subsequent annealing have been investigated. Above 310 °C the formation of L10 FePt is observed. As the milling time increases, the enthalpy evolved during the transformations is reduced, whereas the corresponding activation energy increases. For accelerating the ordering process a fine lamellar structure of Fe and Pt is favourable.

Atomic And Micromagnetic Aspects Of L10 Magnetism, Ralph Skomski, Arti Kashyap, Jian Zhou

Nebraska Center for Materials and Nanoscience: Faculty Publications

Atomic and continuum effects in L10 magnets are investigated. Emphasis is on the competition between ferromagnetism, antiferromagnetism, and noncollinear order in both perfect and imperfect structures, and on the temperature dependence of the magnetic anisotropy. The applicability of micromagnetic and atomistic approaches depends on the length scales involved, but there is a broad range of phenomena where both can be used.

Evolutionary Algorithm For The Placement Of Fluid Power Valves On A Valve Stand, Trichy M. Kethara Pasupathy, Ravi Teja Seethamraju, Robert G. Wilhelm Aug 2005

Evolutionary Algorithm For The Placement Of Fluid Power Valves On A Valve Stand, Trichy M. Kethara Pasupathy, Ravi Teja Seethamraju, Robert G. Wilhelm

Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering: Faculty Publications

The choice of placement of fluid power valves on a valve stand and routing by pipes has an impact on operational costs. Choosing the right placement that provides optimum routing configuration or determining the optimum routing for a chosen placement are both computationally hard problems. An evolutionary algorithm (EA), to minimize operational costs while optimizing placement and routing of valves, is developed here. The best practices in the industry are abstracted and implemented in the EA. In this paper, the algorithm and its performance for examples with varying complexities are presented. Our results meet or exceed experienced designers’ solutions.

Domain-Wall Magnetoresistance Of Co Nanowires, Renat F. Sabiryanov, Ashok K. Solanki, John D. Burton, Sitaram Jaswal, Evgeny Y. Tsymbal

Materials Research Science and Engineering Center: Faculty Publications

Using density functional theory implemented within a tight-binding linear muffin-tin orbital method we perform calculations of electronic, magnetic, and transport properties of ferromagnetic free-standing fcc Co wires with diameters up to 1.5 nm. We show that finite-size effects play an important role in these nanowires resulting in oscillatory behavior of electronic charge and the magnetization as a function of the wire thickness, and a nonmonotonic behavior of spin-dependent quantized conductance. We calculate the magnetoresistance (MR) of a domain wall (DW) modeled by a spin-spiral region of finite width sandwiched between two semi-infinite Co wire leads. We find that the DW …

Manure Use Planning: An Evaluation Of A Producer Training Program, Charles S. Wortmann, Richard K. Koelsch, Charles A. Shapiro, Richard L. Deloughery, David D. Tarkalson

Department of Biological Systems Engineering: Papers and Publications

A training program for producers in manure use planning was evaluated. The potential for runoff nutrient loss to surface water can reduced and the value of manure increased through better planning of manure use. Training was conducted throughout Nebraska in 2002 and 2003. Livestock producers who attended evaluated the event at the end of the last class. The need for and impact of the training was greater for continuing operational and maintenance skills of manure utilization that are regularly needed for strategic planning skills. We recommend that training focus primarily on operational and maintenance skills.

Stochastic Modeling Of The Permeability Of Randomly Generated Porous Media, Yusong Li, Eugene Leboeuf, P. K. Basu, Sankaran Mahadevan

Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering: Faculty Publications

Permeability of porous media in subsurface environments is subject to potentially large uncertainties due to the heterogeneity of natural systems. In this study, a first-order reliability method (FORM) is combined with a lattice Boltzmann method (LBM) to estimate the permeability of randomly generated porous media. The proposed procedure provides an increased ease of addressing complex pore structures by employing LBM to model fluid flow, while inheriting the computational efficiency from FORM. Macroscale- equivalent permeability can thus be estimated with significantly reduced computational efforts, while maintaining a connection to the complex microscale fluid dynamics within a pore structure environment. Implemented on …

Managing Phosphorus In Beef Feeding Operations, William F. Kissinger, Richard K. Koelsch, Galen E. Erickson, Terry J. Klopfenstein

Department of Biological Systems Engineering: Conference Presentations and White Papers

A commercial feedlot study was conducted to determine manure nutrient flow in six feedlots representing 6,366 cattle. On average, cattle involved in this summary were yearlings (BW = 353 kg) and gained 183 kg over 123 d. It was calculated that 11.5% of the feed nitrogen and 16.9% of the feed phosphorus was retained by the animal with the remaining nutrients excreted. On average, 25.6 kg of N and 4.1 kg of P (DM basis) were excreted per fed beef animal. On average, 887 kg total manure (solids and water) were removed per finished animal (7.2 kg/animal/d) averaging 73% total …

Integrating Animal Feeding Strategies Into Cnmp Processes: Role Of Updated Asae Standard D384.2, Richard K. Koelsch, W. Powers, A. L. Sutton

Department of Biological Systems Engineering: Conference Presentations and White Papers

This paper introduces the new ASAE Standard D384.2, Manure Production and Characteristics. This new standard provides an equation-based approach that integrates dry matter and nutrient intake as well as animal performance into the final estimate of total solids, nitrogen, and phosphorus excretion for seven livestock and poultry species. The manure excretion estimates of the new standard are compared with the past ASAE standard as well as other commonly used reference values for three specie groups. Significant differences in excretion are common with the new standard compared to past standards. The paper also details examples of how common industry variations in …
