Water reuse is an essential strategy for reducing water demand from conventional sources, alleviating water stress, and promoting sustainability, but understanding the effectiveness of associated treatment processes as barriers to the spread of antibiotic resistance is an important consideration to protecting human health. We comprehensively evaluated the reduction of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) and antibiotic-resistant bacteria (ARB) in two field-operational water reuse systems with distinct treatment trains, one producing water for indirect potable reuse (ozone/biologically-active carbon/granular activated carbon) and the other for non-potable reuse (denitrification-filtration/chlorination) using metagenomic sequencing and culture. The high cost of ion exchange membranes significantly limits the public application of electrodialysis. The research of novel, inexpensive ion exchange membranes is essential to developing and applying electrodialysis desalination technology. This research focuses on fabricating cation exchange membranes with polyethersulfone (PES) and sulfonated PES (sPES) for water treatment. N-Methyl-2-Pyrrolidone (NMP) was used as an organic solvent to dissolve PES. After different solvent evaporation times were optimized from 0 hr to 24 hr, those membranes were formed through the phase inversion technique. This paper reports an enhanced approach of thermal reduction of phosphogypsum (PG) in the presence of sodium chloride (NaCl) in its molten phase. The thermodynamic together with in-situ thermogravimetric-Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (TG-FTIR) result indicates the yield of CaS (solid) at the investigated temperature range (800–850 °C). Addition of NaCl not only appreciably reduces the activation energy of this reaction (800–850 °C) on average from 315 to 175 (kJ·mol−1) materially, but also significantly improve the conversion from CaSO4 to CaS. Additionally, the NaCl based waste salt (NaCl-WS) containing organic compounds (0.21 wt%) was found to produce similar results when compared …

Carbon dioxide sequestration in geological formations has been proposed as a promising solution to reach net zero carbon emissions but the success of underground CO2 storage in sandstone formations depends on the brine/CO2 wettability of sandstone. Research evidence showed that natural geological formation is hydrophobic even in the presence of minute concentration of inherent organic acids. Since the early 2000s, over 1,600 transportation agencies in the United States have adopted Complete Streets policies. Recently, the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) published its Complete Streets, Roads, and Highways Manual, which aims to implement a safe and equitable transportation system throughout the state, as well as a Complete Streets policy. The manual and policy offer guidance on integrating Complete Streets principles into road design, however, KYTC currently lacks tools or methods to evaluate how well specific projects address Complete Streets goals. Accurate flow measurement data is necessary to effectively manage water resources. The purpose of this research is to investigate options to improve field flow measurement by investigating alternatives for calibrating flow meters installed in non-ideal piping. Typically, to accurately measure a flow rate using most types of flow meters, it is recommended that a straight section of pipe be installed immediately upstream and downstream of the flow meter to avoid flow fluctuations at the meter location. Granular materials, such as sand, are multi-scale materials combining an immense number of crushable particles to create an assembly. Numerical approaches to modeling sand’s mechanical behavior often use simplifications, such as treating the volume as a continuum or representing the particles with rigid, idealized spheres using the discrete element method. Intelligent transportation systems continue to increase complexity, scale, and scope as more devices contain embedded compute. Cooperation among vehicles, intersections, and other members of the greater traffic ecosystem at a system-of-systems level is critical to improving the efficiency of the multi-billion-dollar asset that is the U.S. roadway infrastructure. This work introduces a negotiations strategy among multi-agent reinforcement learning agents and applies this to both traffic signal control and supervisory control of vehicle platooning. A rapidly urbanizing world is adding unprecedented stress to water resources. Urbanization results in high rates of stream impairment, including but not limited to ecological stress, pollution, and flooding. A fully integrated and holistic perspective is necessary for effective remediation strategies for these wicked problems. This monitoring study from a heterogeneous urban watershed investigated the geospatial and seasonal interactions between urban hydrology and biological processes using stable isotope compositions, anions, and microbial.

Wastewater-based epidemiology (WBE) serves as a crucial tool for monitoring SARS-CoV-2 prevalence on university campuses, yet concerns persist regarding its effectiveness as an early warning system for COVID-19 outbreaks. This study aimed to address these concerns through a comprehensive field trial conducted at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. We investigated correlations between SARS-CoV-2 concentrations, both with and without normalization using Pepper Mild Mottle Virus (PMMoV), and various parameters. Significant positive correlations were observed between SARS-CoV-2 concentrations and active cases in the weeks prior to, during, and following the monitoring period, unaffected by PMMoV normalization. This Study Included the Design, Pilot, and Evaluation of a Fourth-Grade Science Unit Entitled "Raising the Green Roof", Exploring These Connections. Cost estimating in the construction industry is challenging due to the high uncertainty associated with the supply chain, especially after the COVID-19 pandemic. Some research studies have addressed such problems by developing models that predict material cost. Ballistic limit equations (BLEs) are semi-analytical expressions used to predict the risk posed by micrometeoroid and orbital debris (MMOD) impacts on a spacecraft. A foundational BLE, known as the new non-optimum (NNO) equation was published by Eric Christiansen of NASA Johnson Space Center in 1990 for application on Whipple shields – two-plate configurations consisting of a thin sacrificial plate located at some standoff in front of the spacecraft pressure hull or structural wall. This study introduced a four-way CFD-DEM coupling approach to simulate the shear-induced particle migration (SIPM) mechanism leading to formation of the lubrication layer (LL) during concrete pumping. The CFD-DEM simulations considered the coupled effect of concentration (10 %–40 %) and wide size distribution (1–17 mm) of aggregate and rheology of the mortar for forces between the suspending matrix and the particles (and vice versa), as well as force transmission directly between particles (and the pipe wall). High concentrations of suspended sediment (SSC) in a river can represent a critical water quality concern, reduce the storage capacity of reservoirs, and impact aquatic habitat. The total amount of sediment is calculated from a combination of river properties, including the amount of available sediment and the flow of water carrying the sediment. As earthquake waves exit rock and travel up through softer subsurface strata on their way to the surface, the intensity of ground shaking is significantly influenced by the subsurface soil layering and often increases in areas with deeper, softer soil deposits. The soft soils present in Utah’s valleys, deposited during the era of Lake Bonneville, tend to amplify the energy and intensity of ground motion felt by people and structures alike. The utilization of recycled aggregate (RA) as substitute of natural aggregate in concrete contributes to the research of sustainable building construction materials. Many applications of RA have been studied worldwide. However, the application of RA with a specific range of strength and specific damage behavior requires further study. This research aims to examine the mechanical characteristics of RA concrete, particularly its load–displacement response and crack pattern, through the experimental and numerical studies of compressive strength test. Developing sustainable manufacturing methods that balance environmental and economic aspects is challenging. A comprehensive analysis of the economics of machining and carbon emissions is essential to encourage adopting sustainable practices. This work presents the machinability and comparative sustainability analysis of Nimonic 80 superalloy when it is machined utilizing a novel, environmentally friendly vegetable oil-based hybrid nanofluid-minimum quantity lubrication (MQL) and liquid carbon dioxide (LCO2) technique.
