Emission of hydrogen chloride (HCl) from coal combustion is not controlled just like for example sulpfur dioxide emission. But HCl emission is also important, because chlorine content in some types of coal can reach the similar level to sulfur content. In the paper the measurement results of HCl emission to the air during combustion of three types of coal with law content of chlorine were presented. The researches were carried out for a steam pulverized coal boiler (max. boiler efficiency – 430 t/h) during three various loads (respectively 65, 80 and 95 % of maximum efficiency) without flue gas desulfurization. …

Evaluation Of Artificial Intelligence Based Models For Chemical Biodegradability Prediction, James R. Baker, Dragan Gamberger, James R. Mihelcic, Aleksandar Sabljic
Michigan Tech Publications
This study presents a review of biodegradability modeling efforts including a detailed assessment of two models developed using an artificial intelligence based methodology. Validation results for these models using an independent, quality reviewed database, demonstrate that the models perform well when compared to another commonly used biodegradability model, against the same data. The ability of models induced by an artificial intelligence methodology to accommodate complex interactions in detailed systems, and the demonstrated reliability of the approach evaluated by this study, indicate that the methodology may have application in broadening the scope of biodegradability models. Given adequate data for biodegradability of …

Sub-Surface Corrosion Research On Rock Bolt System, Perforated Ss Sheets And Steel Sets For The Yucca Mountain Repository, Dhanesh Chandra, Jaak J.K. Daemen, Jaime Gonzalez, Raymond Keeler, Amy J. Smiecinski
Publications (YM)
The objective of the proposed investigation is to conduct corrosion research and predict the durability of rock-bolts and other underground metallic roof supports. In critical areas, it is possible to use highly corrosion resistant steels for rock bolts at Yucca Mountain (YM) repository, as the steel rock bolts, as well as other materials such as Bernold type shields for tunnels at YM site [1-4]. In addition, there is propensity for stress corrosion cracking as well as hydrogen induced cracking in rock bolts likely to occur in YM repository emplacement under drift conditions. As corrosion of these materials for underground support …
The Social And Economic Costs Of Employee Misclassification In Construction [Massachusetts Report], Françoise Carré, Randall Wilson
The Social And Economic Costs Of Employee Misclassification In Construction [Massachusetts Report], Françoise Carré, Randall Wilson
Center for Social Policy Publications
With this study, a cross disciplinary team of the Center for Construction Policy Research has taken a first and significant step in documenting employee misclassification in the Massachusetts construction industry. This report documents the dimensions of misclassification and its implications for tax collection and worker compensation insurance.
Misclassification occurs when employers treat workers who would otherwise be waged or salaried employees as independent contractors (self employed). Or as one report commissioned by the U.S. Department of Labor put it, misclassification occurs “when workers (who should be) getting W-2 forms for income tax filing instead receive 1099- Miscellaneous Income forms.”
New Product Launch Decisions Under Competition And Uncertainty: A Real Options And Game-Theoretic Approach To New Product Development, James O. Ostler
New Product Launch Decisions Under Competition And Uncertainty: A Real Options And Game-Theoretic Approach To New Product Development, James O. Ostler
Theses and Dissertations
New product development is central to many firms' future success. Not only as a means to continue to maintain their piece of the market, but product development can also be a strategic means for a company to diversify, and/or alter focus to adapt to changing market conditions.
Most of the research in new product development has been on how to do it cheaper and faster than the next guy. However, early commercialization does not guarantee a position of strength in the market. Failures of EMI in CT scanners and Xerox in personal computers illustrate that being first to market does …
A Finite Element Simulation Of Temperature And Material Flow In Fricton Stir Welding, Mark J. Lasley
A Finite Element Simulation Of Temperature And Material Flow In Fricton Stir Welding, Mark J. Lasley
Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this research was to use the Transvalor S.A. product, Forge3, to develop a finite element simulation of the friction stir welding process that improves the predictability of temperature evolution and material flow within the plunge portion of the process. Previous modeling created more heating within the billet than experimental results, probably due to the simplification of the simulation with adiabatic boundary conditions. More realistic tooling temperatures were included in this model as these affect heat evolution which is a determining factor in microcrystalline growth. These results were validated by experimental efforts using a billet and tooling instrumented …

Makara Journal of Technology
Influence of Connection Placement to the Behavior of Precast Concrete Exterior Beam-Column Joint. This paper presents an experimental study on the influence of connection placement to the behaviour of exterior beamcolumn joint of precast concrete structure under semi cyclic loading. Four half-scale beam-column specimens were investigated. Three beam-columns were jointed through connection that are placed in beam-column joint region and the forth is connected at the plastic hinge potensial region of the beam. Crack patterns, strength, stiffness and ductility of the test specimens have been evaluated. The test result indicated that all beam-column specimens show good ductility behavior.

Makara Journal of Technology
The Effects of Influent Debit on Hydrodynamic Characteristic of Bojongsoang Facultative Pond: Without Wind Effects. The performance of facultative pond in Bojongsoang WWTP have reported to be unstable. One of the cause of the unstable performance is the hydrodynamic characteristics that not met the criterion. The improper hydrodynamic characteristics are included the existence of dead-zone, the short-circuiting, and the turbulence due to eddy current. The study was to analyze the effect of the influent debit variation on the hydrodynamic characteristics of the pond using mathematical model. The two-dimensional hydrodynamic model was built from two hydrodynamic equations which are continuity and …

A Method For Winding Advanced Composites Of Unconventional Shapes Using Continuous And Aligned Fibers, Abraham K. Allen
A Method For Winding Advanced Composites Of Unconventional Shapes Using Continuous And Aligned Fibers, Abraham K. Allen
Theses and Dissertations
Advanced composites are extremely strong, rigid, and light, even when compared with advanced metals. Advanced composites are replacing high-tech metals as the material of choice for aerospace engineering. However, the processes used to manufacture advanced composites generally lose some of the properties of the materials by their process limitations.
One process that keeps the theoretically awesome qualities of the composite materials in tact is filament winding. Filament wound parts are used as rocket shells, bicycle frame tubes, drive shafts, pressure vessels, etc. Filament winding is an automated process and makes reliable parts to close tolerances. If a straight tube were …

Investigation Of Disinfection Byproduct Precursors In The Wachusett Reservoir Watershed, Darleen P. Bryan
Investigation Of Disinfection Byproduct Precursors In The Wachusett Reservoir Watershed, Darleen P. Bryan
Environmental & Water Resources Engineering Masters Projects
The disinfection of drinking water with chlorine was implemented as early as 1908 in an effort to inactivate water borne pathogens. However, chlorine reacts with naturally occurring organic' matter in water to form a host of chlorination byproducts. The possible detrimental health effects from exposure to these byproducts lead to the development offederal regulations for disinfection byproducts (DBPs) in drinking water. Most recently, standards were reduced to 80 ug/L for trihalomethanes, and 60 ug/L for haloacetic acids. The drinking water supplied by the Massachusetts Water Resources Authority (MWRA) has approached and sometimes exceeded the concern level at a few locations …

Simulation Of Evapotranspiration And Rainfall-Runoff For The Stillwater River Watershed In Central Massachusetts, Kavitha M. Ambikadevi
Environmental & Water Resources Engineering Masters Projects
Preliminary studies were conducted on the application of the TOPMODEL to the 3.1.6 me Stillwater River watershed in the Wachusett reservoir basin. TOPMODEL is a physically based - semi distributed hydrological model, which simulates rainfall runoff at a daily or sub-daily time steps. TOPMODEL, version 95.02 was used for the modeling studies. This version of TOPMODEL assumes an exponential transmissivity function for the soil and a first order hyperbolic recession curve for the baseflow. TOPMODEL estimates runoff as the sum of base flow, inflltration "excess overland flow and saturation excess overland flow. Inflltration excess overland flow is modeled using the …

Modeling And Source Apportionment Of Primary And Secondary Pm2.5 In The Atmosphere, Prakash Doraiswamy
Modeling And Source Apportionment Of Primary And Secondary Pm2.5 In The Atmosphere, Prakash Doraiswamy
Doctoral Dissertations
Source apportionment of PM2.5 is important to identify the source categories that are responsible for the concentrations observed at a particular receptor. Although receptor models have been used to do source apportionment, they do not fully take into account the chemical reactions (including photochemical reactions) involved in the formation of secondary fine particles. Secondary fine particles are formed from photochemical and other reactions involving precursor gases such as sulfur dioxide (SO2), oxides of nitrogen (NOx), ammonia (NH3) and volatile organic compounds (VOC). The purpose of this research work was to model primary and …

This paper presents new correlations for assessment of the likelihood of initiation (or “triggering”) of soil liquefaction. These new correlations eliminate several sources of bias intrinsic to previous, similar correlations, and provide greatly reduced overall uncertainty and variance. Key elements in the development of these new correlations are (1) accumulation of a significantly expanded database of field performance case histories; (2) use of improved knowledge and understanding of factors affecting interpretation of standard penetration test data; (3) incorporation of improved understanding of factors affecting site-specific earthquake ground motions (including directivity effects, site-specific response, etc.); (4) use of improved methods for …

Algoritmo Genético Para Calibração Automática De Um Simulador De Tráfego Em Rodovias De Pista Simples, C. Y. Egami, J. R. Setti, Laurence Rilett
Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering: Faculty Publications

The National Science Foundation (NSF) Co-OP (Coastal Ocean Program) Project RISE (River-Influenced Shelf Ecosystems) seeks to understand how primary and secondary productivity are enhanced by large river plumes in upwelling regions, using the Columbia River plume as a case study. Columbia River plume waters are rich in silicate and iron, but relatively depleted in nitrate. Mixing of nitrate-rich upwelled water with the plume is, therefore, important to plume primary production. Large internal tidal currents cause part of the necessary mixing. Accordingly, any long-term changes in these internal tides could impact productivity. Because no decadal-scale current observations are available to evaluate …

The Synthesis And Characterization Of Mesoporous Uranium Oxide Catalysts For Oxidative Destructions Of Volatile Organic Compounds And Clean Air Protection, Cyrus Khezr Riahi-Nezhad
Masters Theses
The overall goal of this research was to investigate a new class of mesoporous uranium oxide catalyst used to destroy a range of volatile organic compounds (VOCs), including aromatics and chlorinated organic compounds under conditions which are applicable for U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) facilities and U.S. industries.
Uranium oxides are known to have high efficiency and long-term stability when used to destroy volatile organic compounds (VOCs) when compared with some of the commercial catalysts, such as precious metals, TiO2, and Co3O4 catalysts. Two key factors limiting catalytic activities of uranium oxides prepared by conventional …
