Recent Problems In The Foundationsof Mathematics, Terence H. Perciante
Recent Problems In The Foundationsof Mathematics, Terence H. Perciante
ACMS Conference Proceedings 1977
This paper examines the foundational crises that have haunted twentieth-century mathematics, beginning with a brief review of the effects generated by Gauss, Lobachevsky, and Bolyai who each developed non-Euclidean parallel axiom. Though of mathematical interest in their own right, the significance of the new geometries was greatly magnified when it was discerned that they could be used to adequately model physical space, even to the extent that Einstein’s theory of relativity later employed as its model a non-Euclidean geometry developed by Riemann. The question that obviously presented itself was how could any given geometry be called true when it and …

A Brief Introduction To Gödel’S Theorems, Michael Detlefsen
ACMS Conference Proceedings 1977
Gödel’s two famous incompleteness theorems are results that have come up a number of times in the discussions at the 1977 ACMS conference. This paper provides a brief and relatively non-technical statement on these results and of their significance for the foundations of mathematics.
Recent Parallels Between The Philosophy Of Science And Mathematics, Joseph Spradley
Recent Parallels Between The Philosophy Of Science And Mathematics, Joseph Spradley
ACMS Conference Proceedings 1977
Following World War I European philosophy of science formed an alliance with mathematics culminating in an attitude of certainty and autonomy that rejected all non empirical claims to truth and purported to make all science presupposition less. The rise and fall of logical positivism has been one of the major themes of of twentieth century thought and illustrates the danger of placing too much emphasis on science and mathematics as an ideal for all knowledge. The restriction of rational inquiry to the modes of scientific verification and the processes of mathematical logic was far too confining for the containment of …
Existence In Mathematics, Willis Alberda
Existence In Mathematics, Willis Alberda
ACMS Conference Proceedings 1977
Contemplation of the existence of mathematical entities for very apparent reasons generates a mental cycling of arguments dealing with the nature of mathematical truth, meaning in mathematics, and the obviously related question of which of these two problems should be solved first. The problem of the existence of mathematical entities dates from the first thoughts and ideas of a mathematical nature. The problem of existence in mathematics is fundamental to the domain of speculation and research on the foundations of mathematics. When we try to put ourselves in the place of those philosophers who first explored this problem we must …
The Foundations Of Mathematics And The Mathematics Curriculum, Bayard Baylis
The Foundations Of Mathematics And The Mathematics Curriculum, Bayard Baylis
ACMS Conference Proceedings 1977
In teaching the foundations of mathematics within the framework of a Christian college, and particularly that of a Christian liberal arts college, there are two groups of students which must be served. The first consisted of the non-mathematics majors—those non-scientifically oriented “general anything” students who, as a catalog might put it, are to receive “an introduction to and an appreciation of the history, foundations, culture and applications of mathematics.” The second group consists of the mathematics majors, and the few science majors who have not been frightened away by the calculus. The gulf between these two groups is sufficiently large, …

Evolution Of An Environmental Science College, Ted F. Andrews
Evolution Of An Environmental Science College, Ted F. Andrews
University Anniversaries & Historical Documents
Governors State University was established in July, 1969, by the State of Illinois as a free-standing upper division university with a mandate to develop a new model of higher education system. William E. Engbretson, the first and only President of GSU, invited me to join the administrative staff as Dean in September, 1969. I have had the opportunity to participate in planning ail systems of the University during the past six years. As a biologist-ecologist I had had considerable experience In various science curriculum development and science teacher education projects. Hence, I was interested in developing a College of Environmental …

Federal And State Regulations Pertaining To Systematic Collections. I. A Case Of Inadvertent Violation Of Federal Regulations, Jerry R. Choate, Hugh H. Genoways
University of Nebraska State Museum: Mammalogy Papers
First paragraph:
On 25 April 1975, at the twenty-second annual meeting of SWAN (i.e. Southwestern Association of Naturalists), at the University of Oklahoma Biological Station, President Keith A. Arnold appointed one of us (Choate) to investigate current regulations pertaining to collection and transport of scientific specimens in the region of representation (including Mexico) or SWAN. This charge involves both Federal and State laws, several of which are undergoing change and many of which doubtlessly are not familiar to the membership of SWAN. In order that SWAN members might be made aware of these regulations and not unwittingly commit violations, it …
Engineering At Gettysburg College, William C. Darrah
Engineering At Gettysburg College, William C. Darrah
College History Publications
This little volume narrates the story of engineering instruction at Gettysburg College, particularly of the Engineering Department that functioned from 1912 to 1940. It includes also an account of the apparently first venture in engineering by an American liberal arts college, undertaken during the brief association of the renowned Herman Haupt with Gettysburg College between 1837 and 1847.
Time dims our memories. Although there are more than fifty living alumni who were graduated from the Engineering Department, many Gettysburgians are unaware of its existence and accomplishments. The purpose of this story is to place on record a significant aspect of …

Achievement And Retention In The Audio-Tutorial Program Versus The Traditional Program, Rose Anna Swanson
Masters Theses
During Fall Quarter, 1970, 339 students enrolled in life science taught by the audio-tutorial method and 492 students in life science by the traditional method at Eastern Illinois University. This total population was compared with respect to achievement as measured by grades. A sample of 175 students was drawn from the population. The 76 audio-tutorial students were compared with the 99 students from traditional sections with respect to achievement as measured by grades earned, retention of material, and predicted grade point average.
The study was designed: 1) To compare the achievement in life science as measured by grades of those …

On The Allocation Of Federal Funds For Science Education, David E. Drew
On The Allocation Of Federal Funds For Science Education, David E. Drew
CGU Faculty Publications and Research
Massive Federal expenditures for science research and development have been commonplace since World War II and the spectacular technical success of the Manhattan project. Shortly after the war the case for continued government support of basic science research was made by Vannevar Bush (1945) and others; the major organization which grew out of this Federal concern was the National Science Foundation. Subsequently the late fifties (and the voyage of Sputnik) saw science education become a national priority. That period spawned a wide array of measures in support of science education, e.g., the National Defense Education Act.
The passage of time …

Engineer's Day, The University Of Missouri At Rolla (1966), University Of Missouri At Rolla
Engineer's Day
Engineer's Day is a distinguished tradition on the Rolla campus. It is an occasion of public recognition of a highly respected profession as well as an opportunity for personal inquiry by high school students who may be considering careers in engineering.
This magazine, written by students on the campus, includes industrial scenes portraying something of their future professional employment. The laboratory displays which you visit today are intended for the same purpose . . . the association of campus study with professional life.
As you move about the campus, don't hesitate to ask questions. This day is for you. Make …

A Brief Sketch Of The Life And Work Of Charles Edwin Bessey, Raymond J. Pool
A Brief Sketch Of The Life And Work Of Charles Edwin Bessey, Raymond J. Pool
Papers in Systematics & Biological Diversity
Charles Edwin Bessey, professor of botany and head of the department of botany in the University of Nebraska since 1884 and a conspicuous figure in American science and education, passed away at his home in Lincoln on February 25, 1915, after a critical illness of four weeks.
The Bessey family is of French extraction, the original form of the name being Besse. The tradition is that the early members of the family, who were Huguenots, were compelled on account of religious persecution to flee to England from the old home near Strassburg in Alsace. This exodus occurred in the latter …
