Since the 2005 American Statistical Association's (ASA) endorsement of the Guidelines for Assessment and Instruction in Statistics Education (GAISE) College Report, changes in the statistics field and statistics education have had a major impact on the teaching and learning of statistics. We now live in a world where "Statistics - the science of learning from data - is the fastest-growing science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) undergraduate degree in the United States," according to the ASA, and where many jobs demand an understanding of how to explore and make sense of data. In light of these new reports and other …

Establishing a strong STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) identity at Boise State University, a metropolitan campus with approximately 3,655 undergraduate STEM students and a total undergraduate enrollment of approximately 19,042 (16,136 FTE) has been an important step toward creating a climate conducive to facilitating fundamental change. Examples of such change include building collaborations among faculty within and across departments, establishing the identity of students as part of a community beyond their chosen major, improving the efficiency and effectiveness of university systems, and perhaps most importantly, developing a framework to think deliberately about ways to effect change. This paper is …

Analysis is typically listed in taxonomies of higher order thinking. Academics consider these taxonomies worthwhile, but they are hard to teach and we are apt to ignore them. Today higher education is criticized for “dumbing down” curriculum or lowering standards. To rectify this, many policies at the state or national level are requiring higher education institutions to change. In K-12 education, Race to the Top and Common Core requirements are placing new demands on K-12 teacher preparation, which include evaluation of the analysis skills of pre-service teachers. But professors do not always view their disciplines as the proper place for …

A Comparison Of Two Job Offers In Mathematics Education, Ryan Andrew Nivens
Ryan Andrew Nivens
Many job seekers in higher education are unaware of how large a discrepancy there can be in terms of financial potential for mathematics education jobs in higher education. Recent research on this topic has focused on the base salary (Reys, Reys, & Estapa, 2013), but other financial factors have been left unstudied. Through two cases, the researcher demonstrates a large gap that exists in net pay when major financial factors beyond base salary are considered, specifically insurance and retirement benefits. This article will spur conversations among faculty and graduate students in mathematics education doctoral programs allowing mentors to draw from …

Analysis is typically the first of the higher functions listed in taxonomies of higher order thinking. Academics consider these upper categories extremely worthwhile, but they are hard to teach and we are apt to ignore them. Today higher education is being criticized for “dumbing down” curriculum or lowering standards. To rectify this, many policies at the state or national level are requiring higher education institutions to change. In K‐12 education, Race to the Top and Common Core requirements are placing new demands on K‐12 teacher preparation, which include evaluation of the analysis skills of pre‐service teachers. But professors do not …

This study evaluated the impact that trained and supported undergraduate teaching assistants (UTAs) may have had on the academic achievement of students in the first semester of an introductory chemistry course for science and engineering majors. Framed by the concepts of Lave and Wenger’s Community of Practice and Wheeler, Martin and Suls’ Proxy Model of Social Comparison , the study used an untreated control group with dependent post-test only design. Covariates related to student academic achievement and contextual variables were also collected and used to build models for the final exam core outcome variable. Hierarchical linear models indicated that having …

Derivation Of The Volume Of Tetrahedron/Pyramid Bounded By A Given Plane & The Co-Ordinate Planes, Harish Chandra Rajpoot Rajpoot Hcr
Harish Chandra Rajpoot H.C. Rajpoot
The article here deals with the derivation of a general expression to calculate the volume of tetrahedron/pyramid bounded by a given plane & the co-rdinate planes (i.e. XY-plane, YZ-plane & ZX-plane) using intercept form of equation of a plane in 3-D space. All the derivations are based on simple geometry. These are very useful to directly calculate the volume of the bounded tetrahedron/pyramid.

This paper describes the development of two inquiry-based experiments in a mechanical engineering curriculum at a land grant research-intensive university, aimed at providing students with the opportunity to design and perform experiments. One experiment in engineering measurements (system behavior) and one experiment in fluid dynamics were developed. In each case, students working on teams were posed with a scenario and question to answer. For example, in the system dynamics experiment, students were asked to verify that a thermal system and electrical system were mechanically equivalent systems. In the fluid dynamics experiment, students were asked to investigate drag coefficients for flow …

Working Toward A Third Space In The Teaching Of Elementary Mathematics, Ryan Flessner
Working Toward A Third Space In The Teaching Of Elementary Mathematics, Ryan Flessner
Ryan Flessner
Building on work in the area of third space theory, this study documents one teacher’s efforts to create third spaces in an elementary mathematics classroom. In an attempt to link the worlds of theory and practice, I examine how the work of other theorists and researchers – inside and outside the field of education – can create new lenses for classroom practitioners. In addition, the article provides evidence that third spaces may be more difficult to realize than others have described. Rather than forcing a third space to emerge, what this study finds more important is creating an environment that …

This study examines the effect of promoting inquiry-based teaching (IBT) through collaboration between a science methods course and mathematics methods course in an elementary teacher education program. During the collaboration, preservice elementary teacher (PST) candidates experienced 3 different types of inquiry as a way to foster increased understanding of inquiry based teaching (IBT). The experiences included a PST driven science inquiry and a mathematics inquiry where PSTs were learners and a science inquiry where PSTs were teachers. During and following the semester of the collaboration, data were collected to assess the impact of the inquiry experiences on the PSTs’ understanding …

Reflection Of A Point About A Line & A Plane In 2-D & 3-D Co-Ordinate Systems, Harish Chandra Rajpoot Rajpoot Hcr
Harish Chandra Rajpoot H.C. Rajpoot
All the articles are related to the reflection of any point about a line in 2-D co-ordinate system and about a line & a plane in 3-D co-ordinate system. Point of reflection about a line or a plane can be easily determined simply by applying the procedures explained or by using formula derived here. These formulas are also useful to determine the foot of perpendicular drawn from a point to a line or a plane in 3-D space. All these derivations are based on the application of simple geometry.

Solid Angles Subtended By The Platonic Solids (Regular Polyhedra) At Their Vertices, Harish Chandra Rajpoot Rajpoot Hcr
Harish Chandra Rajpoot H.C. Rajpoot
The solid angles subtended at the vertices by all five platonic solids (regular polyhedrons) have been calculated by the author Mr H.C. Rajpoot by using standard formula of solid angle. These are the standard values of solid angles for all five platonic solids i.e. regular tetrahedron, regular hexahedron (cube), regular octahedron, regular dodecahedron & regular icosahedron useful for the analysis of platonic solids.

Mathematical Analysis Of Tetrahedron (Solid Angle Subtended By Any Tetrahedron At Its Vertex), Harish Chandra Rajpoot Rajpoot Hcr
Harish Chandra Rajpoot H.C. Rajpoot
All the articles have been derived by the author Mr H.C. Rajpoot by using HCR's Inverse cosine formula & HCR's Theory of Polygon. These formula are very practical & simple to apply in case of any tetrahedron to calculate the internal (dihedral) angles between the consecutive lateral faces meeting at any of four vertices & the solid angle subtended by it (tetrahedron) at the vertex when the angles between the consecutive edges meeting at the same vertex are known. These are the generalized formula which can also be applied in case of three faces meeting at the vertex of various …

Integrating Games To Teach A First Programming Course, Soumia Ichoua
Soumia Ichoua
In the past few years, there has been an increased interest in game-based learning as a powerful tool to stimulate students’ interest and promote their engagement in the learning process. In this paper, we discuss our experience in integrating gaming to teach a first programming course. The course is restructured and redesigned to allow teaching the basics of programming through games. Students actively use fundamental programming concepts learned to modify and create two dimension games using C# and XNA with .Net framework. This is an on-going work. Surveys and worksheets are developed to be used in assessing the effectiveness of …
