Motivation Of Secondary-School Teachers In The Lake Union Conference Of Seventh-Day Adventists Based On Herzberg's Dual-Factor Theory Of Job Satisfaction And Motivation, Khillah Latif Khillah Jan 1986

Motivation Of Secondary-School Teachers In The Lake Union Conference Of Seventh-Day Adventists Based On Herzberg's Dual-Factor Theory Of Job Satisfaction And Motivation, Khillah Latif Khillah

Dissertations

Several studies in industry and public education have defined areas of job satisfactionand dissatisfaction. It appears that the Seventh-day Adventist secondary-school teachers are confronted with most of the same motivating factors as their counterparts in public schools. Job dissatisfaction can result in teacher mobility which may disrupt the operation of any school system.

The study population included all the secondary-school teachers for 1984-85 in ten Lake Union Conference of Seventh-day Adventists senior academies. Herzberg'sinstrument to measure workers' motivation was modified and used for the collection of data; Chi-square and Spearman r tests provided tests of significance as well as rank …

Edward Alexander Sutherland And The Seventh-Day Adventist Educational Reform: The Denominational Years, Warren Sidney Ashworth

Dissertations

Problem. Edward Alexander Sutherland, 1865-1955, was one of the most notable and successful educational reformers of the Seventh-day Adventist Church. He served the church for sixty years, fifty-three of them as president of four Adventist colleges. This study has been delimited to his years of denominational employment, 1890 through 1904, but does not include his forty-one years as president of Madison College--a self-suporting Adventist institution that received no direct financial assistance from the denomination.

Method. This study, investigating Sutherland's life from the perspective of his work as an educational reformer, employed the historical method of research. Major sources included extensive …

Purpose: This study investigated the use of mapping as an instructional technique to improve reading comprehension in readers exhibiting word-calling behavior (difference model readers) . It was hypothesized that mapping would provide means for processing information from the text at the levels of concept formation, association and integration. Procedure: Six students in grades 7 through 10 were selected as subjects. They received instruction in mapping in conjunction with their regular reading program. At the conclusion of each instructional unit, a test passage was …

A Study Of Hemispheric Preference As It Relates To Reading And Recalling Nonsense Words From A Card Reader, Charlotte V. Groff

Dissertations

Problem. Information was not found in the literature concerning whether an individual, beginning reader or problem reader, consistently recalled a greater percentage of nonsense words attempted from a card reader with the right ear and right visual field (a Left Hemisphere Method), or with the left ear and left visual field (a Right Hemisphere Method), and whether one of these two methods achieved better results than using both eyes and both ears (the Both Hemispheres Method).

Method. This pilot study employed case study/clinical, formative methodology with eighteen boys and nine girls, ages 6-12 in preschool through grade four. The probability …

Dissertations

The Haitian baccalaureat is a difficult centralized state examination. Every year the percentage of students who pass this examination varies from 20 to 30 percent. There was a need for systematic research of the predominant factors which determine success in the Haitian baccalaureat.

The purpose of this study was to determine whether or not selected factors were related to success in the baccalaureat. Three hundred and sixteen graduates in the baccalaureat for the 1984-85 school year, 150 Rhetorique Teachers, and forty principals served as subjects in this study. Profile Of The Incestuous Father, Cheryl Ann Walters Jan 1986

Profile Of The Incestuous Father, Cheryl Ann Walters

Graduate Research Papers

Incest, defined by Taylor (1984) as " ... the sexual touching between an adult and a child in a family for the personal gratification of the adult", is a serious problem in the United States (p. 195). In particular, father-daughter incest has been seen by counselors and therapists as a more frequently reported problem (Finkelhor, 1984). Finkelhor's (1978) survey results stated that at least 5 women out of every 1000 had been sexually abused by their fathers. However, a more recent study by Russell (1984) reported that 1 out of 44 women had incestuous relationships with their biological fathers.

Kelly (1980) defines school climate as feelings of satisfaction, how the needs of the individual are met in the environment, and productivity, …

Aliteracy: The Relationship Between The Electronic Culture And Voluntary Reading, Geraldine H. Aschenbeck Jan 1986

Aliteracy: The Relationship Between The Electronic Culture And Voluntary Reading, Geraldine H. Aschenbeck

UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Aliteracy, the term used to describe those who can read but choose not to do so, has become a grave concern in this country. A review of the literature indicates Americans are choosing to use their leisure time to interact with the electronic media to gather information instead of reading to gain knowledge. The skills of critical thinking and decision making are at stake. Schools and homes who have been successful in teaching the skill or reading must now instill the value of reading in order to preserve the democratic process upon which this country was founded.

The Impact Of An Intrusive Orientation Model On The Retention And Grade Point Average Of Second Semester Freshmen On Academic Probation At An Urban University, Walter Rupert Earl Jan 1986

The Impact Of An Intrusive Orientation Model On The Retention And Grade Point Average Of Second Semester Freshmen On Academic Probation At An Urban University, Walter Rupert Earl

Theses and Dissertations in Urban Services - Urban Education

More than one-third of all entering freshmen will not be continuous students into a sophomore year. Academic and orientation interventions usually are based on the assumption that students will self-identify their needs and seek help. The intrusive model is an alternative intervention strategy based on the theory that students will respond to direct contact in which problems in their academic life are identified and assistance offered. To evaluate the effectiveness of the model, seventy-four freshmen who were placed on probation at the end of their first semester participated in an intrusive project involving counseling and evaluation of the causes of …
