Effects Of Feedback And Incentives On The Use Of Academic Skills, Jose E. Candia
Effects Of Feedback And Incentives On The Use Of Academic Skills, Jose E. Candia
Masters Theses
This research investigates the notion that the combination of feedback and incentives are essential components for the maintenance of effective academic skills with undergraduate students on academic probation. This notion is in contradiction to the assumption underlying remedial activities in most universities, where it is assumed that once the students have acquired the skills through workshops or texts they will continue to use them.
The use of the academic skills of lecture note-taking, comprehensive reading, and critical reading was studied with three undergraduate students. That use was measured prior to the intervention, during workshops of training, when feedback alone was …
The Effect Of Studying Higher-Level Thinking Skills On Fifth Grade Students With High Language Ability, Gary Lee Cottrell
The Effect Of Studying Higher-Level Thinking Skills On Fifth Grade Students With High Language Ability, Gary Lee Cottrell
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
The purpose of this project was to investigate the effect of studying higher-level thinking skills on fifth grade students with high language ability. The researcher compared the test scores of students in an elementary enrichment program with test scores of students enrolled in the same program the following year to which materials emphasizing higher-level thinking skills were added. The researcher also included analysis of student performance on the Ross Test of Higher Cognitive Processes and its component parts of analysis, synthesis, and evaluation as well as each of the eight subtests.
It was determined that analysis of Ross Test raw …

Summary And Analysis Of. Scores On The Michigan Educational Assessment Tests For The Portage Public Schools (1980-1984), Jim Migliaccio
Masters Theses
The objective of this study was to identify the specific areas of weakness and strength in the mathematics and reading programs of the Portage Public Schools in grades 4, 7, and 10, by isolating each of the skill areas and the specific objectives within each of those skill areas by comparing the scores of students in the Portage Public Schools with the scores of all other students in the State of Michigan for five (5) years (1980-1984). After identifying areas of strength and weakness, the intent was to recommend possible remedies for those areas determined to be in need of …

Field Testing Of An Instrument For Measuring Educator Knowledge Of Laws Of The State Of Michigan, Barbara A. Souve
Dissertations
In this study, educator literacy about selected laws of the state of Michigan pertaining to education is examined. Literature related to laws and litigation have often included assertions that educators are not familiar with laws and court decisions related to their workplace.
The purpose of this study was to develop and field test an instrument for measurement of educator knowledge of laws of the state of Michigan related to education and judged important as laws about which educators should be knowledgeable. A test was developed from three sources: the Michigan School Code of 1976, Michigan Laws Relating to Education, and …

An Inquiry Into The Influence Of Expressive Writing Practice On The Transactional Writing Abilities Of Selected Fourth Grade Students, Maureen Elliott Hook
An Inquiry Into The Influence Of Expressive Writing Practice On The Transactional Writing Abilities Of Selected Fourth Grade Students, Maureen Elliott Hook
Theses and Dissertations in Urban Services - Urban Education
The study is an inquiry into the influence of expressive writing practice on the transactional writing abilities of selected fourth grade students. It is based on the ideas of James Britton, an English theoretician concerned with writing. The study was formulated to investigate how the process of writing occurs. Writing research is at an early stage, and this study will expand the knowledge of the field.
The study consisted of a treatment group receiving intensive practice with expressive writing over the course of one semester while the control group did not. A posttest was administered which involved the students having …

Retention, Grade Point Average & Client Satisfaction Of Professionally Counseled Freshmen & Peer Counseled Freshmen, Anne Murray
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
Samples from two populations, entering freshmen at Western Kentucky University who were either peer counseled/advised or professionally counseled/advised, were compared on three vairables: (i) retention rate as sophomores, (2) freshman grade point averages earned. and (3) client satisfaction with counseling/advisement services.
The variance between the means of the two freshmen groups was analyzed using a two tailed t test. There was no significant difference between groups in retention or grade point average. There was, however, significant difference in client satisfaction between the peer counseled/advised freshmen and the professionally counseled/advised freshmen. Freshmen receiving peer counseling/advisement rated their helpers at a higher …
Arc From Implementation To Payoff Decade And Beyond, Stuart Seely Sprague
Arc From Implementation To Payoff Decade And Beyond, Stuart Seely Sprague
Faculty Research at Morehead State University
Between 1965 and 1974, the Appalachian Regional Commission (ARC) spent in excess of $2 billion. Since 1974, that figure has climbed to more than $4 billion, with the bulk of these funds spent for road building and vocational schools. Despite this outpouring of funds, many in the region have never heard of the ARC. Part of the problem is ARC's lack of credibility, caused by less than spectacular results.

The Relationship Of Selection Criteria To Success In A Graduate Psychology Program, Cheri R. Stein
The Relationship Of Selection Criteria To Success In A Graduate Psychology Program, Cheri R. Stein
Masters Theses
The purpose of this study was to determine the predictive validity of the Graduate Record Examination Aptitude Test (GRE) for the Department of Psychology at Western Michigan University, Kalamazoo. Subjects were 138 psychology doctoral students.
Predictor variables included in the research were GRE-Verbal (GRE-V), GRE-Quantitative (GRE-Q), GRE-Total (GRE-T), Miller's Analogy Test (MAT), and undergraduate grade point average (UGPA). Criterion measures were trichotomous faculty ratings and points earned in three psychology courses.
GRE-V, GRE-Q, GRE-T, and MAT were significantly correlated with faculty ratings (p< .001), and the GRE scores were also significantly related to points earned in classes. Results indicated that MAT scores added no predictive value over and above GRE scores. GRE-T correlations were consistently equal or greater in magnitude than GRE-V and GRE-Q correlation coefficients. It was suggested that GRE-T scores alone be used in selection, with a cut-off point of 1100.

Anxiety And Safety: Two Studies Ol The Kentucky Coal Miner, George E. Dickinson, Stuart Seely Sprague
Faculty Research at Morehead State University
Two reports offer insight into the personality and working conditions of the Kentucky Coal miner. Dr. George E. Dickinson's survey measures death anxiety among miners; Dr. Stuart S. Sprague's correlated report tracks the often volatile effort to legislate and enforce safety regulations. Both reports arrive at one perhaps startling conclusion: many miners agree - and are somewhat supported by statistics - that they themselves are most frequently to blame for accidents.
Staffing And Schools: Selected Readings, Phil Mckenzie
Staffing And Schools: Selected Readings, Phil Mckenzie
Dr Phillip McKenzie
Teachers are the most important resource in the educational process. It is not surprising, therefore, that issues related to staffing schools are of perennial concern. However, the focus of this concern has shifted over time. Some 20 years ago the major issues in staffing were essentially quantitative in nature and concerned with recruiting sufficient teachers to be placed in classrooms. Although teacher numbers are still important, over the past few years there has been increasing interest in some of the more qualitative dimensions of staffing. How can the needs of individual schools be met through staffing allocations? What role should …

Shifts in attitudes toward the academy is a product of changes in the American political economy, especially the rapid expansion of the white-collar sector and corporate takeover, and social movements of the post-war era in which people previously without power began to assert themselves.
