Low-achieving students tend to be "externals," lack mastery orientation, and often do not "take responsibility" for learning. Through the cognitive behavioral approach in this study, the goal is to help the low achiever become better at self-monitoring and encoding information.;Low-achieving students from two elementary schools were pre- and posttested using the Stanford Diagnostic Reading Test (to measure reading achievement), Coopersmith Self-Esteem Inventory (to measure self-esteem), and the Children's Academic Intrinsic Motivation Inventory (to measure intrinsic motivation). The teachers completed, as both a pre and post measure, the Devereux Elementary School Behavior Rating Scale II to measure student classroom behavior. Thirty …

The purpose of this study was to determine which IEPs are of greater quality for learning-disabled students: teacher-written IEPs (those developed without the aid of microcomputers or manuals of goals and objectives); manual-assisted IEPs (those developed with the aid of manuals of goals and objectives); or microcomputer-assisted IEPs (those developed with the aid of both manuals of goals and objectives and microcomputers). The purpose of this study was to investigate the effectiveness of a problem-solving intervention strategy as applied to mildly suicidal adolescents. The population for this study consisted of male and female adolescents aged 14 to 19 who were referred by teachers, counselors, parents or self because of concerns about suicidal behavior. This project was a case study approach focusing on six mildly suicidal adolescents who volunteered from a pool of referrals received during the 1985-1986 school year. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the significance of some contextual factors suspected of having the capacity to influence the availability, content, and affective tone of recollections. One hundred and eight young adult volunteer subjects were each asked to recall six cued recent or early childhood memories. Recall latencies were noted as well as scores indicating the degree of pleasure Ss attributed to their recollections at the time of their recall and the degree of pleasure they recall having attributed to the incidents at the time they occurred. The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between changes in the administrative organizational structure in community colleges and the workload of division chairmen. Changes in administrative organizational structures were characterized by structural complexity variables, primarily horizontal and vertical differentiation. Division chairman workload was analyzed, and division chairmen were described by demographic characteristics and employment patterns.;The division chairman has been identified in the literature to be a critical middle management position whose increasing workload is an issue. The problem statement for this study asks which characteristics of the community college environment are the best discriminators between faculty who currently use computers in instruction and those who do not. Specific research questions ask whether the environmental context of the faculty or individual faculty attributes are better discriminators between computer uses and nonusers.;The target population was the full-time faculty employed in the Virginia Community College System. This study compared the effectiveness of two structured small-group counseling techniques, Peer Counseling and Achievement Motivation Training, on the school attendance and academic achievement of underachieving alternative high school students. It also investigated whether participation in daily counseling sessions over a six-week period positively effected measures of self-concept, locus of control, and tendency to achieve.;Experimental subjects were 81 high school students in grades nine through twelve in a public open alternative high school. This study investigated the relative merits of the paradoxical directives (PD) counseling techniques to the more didactic cognitive restructuring (CR) intervention. It was hypothesized that subjects in the PD groups would show an improvement in self-esteem, a reduction in depression and anxiety, and a change reflective of a more internal locus-of-control orientation to a degree significantly greater than the CR and the control groups.;The sample consisted of sixty eighth grade volunteers, twenty from each of three middle schools in a local area school district. This study compared the personal need systems of obese, underweight, and normal weight college students. The Picture Identification Test (PIT) was mailed to the 1984 and 1985 entering freshmen classes at the College of William and Mary. From the 1984 class, 576 students completed the Picture Identification Test (PIT), and from the 1985 class, 505 students completed the PIT. The PIT data from those subjects who met the classification for the weight groups were included in the study. Purpose. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of group counseling on the self-concept of emotionally disturbed students in a public middle school. This study examined the efficacy of non-directive group counseling and structured group counseling and compared the two approaches.;Method. Thirty middle school students diagnosed as emotionally disturbed and enrolled in self-contained special education classes at four different schools were subjects in the study. The purpose of this study was to measure discrepancies between perceived "importance", "attainment" and "effectiveness" of school counselor role and function behaviors as viewed by principals, counselors, and teachers. "Changed image" institutions are defined as those degree-granting institutions that have changed name, sex status, or number of years of instruction offered within the past two decades since 1966.
