Books Are For Reading, Fannie Schmitt

Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts

Surely there has never been another time in which it was so important for people to be able to read-and to read-as it is today. Reading is, or should be, a part of nearly every experience of children, young people, and adults. Valuable though the other media of communication are, they are necessarily inadequate for full coverage: of reporting events, of expressions of opinion, of findings of investigations, of descriptions, of recounting of experiences. Only in books are we likely to find the inclusive, extended coverage necessary for adequate analysis, interpretation, and application. Never before have we been confronted with …

Has Anyone Seen Melvin?, Emma Jane Marek

Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts

"Hi! I'm Melvin. Miss Riley sent me to see you. Gosh, I was scared. I thought I was in real trouble this time. I thought she sent me because I knocked that paste jar on the floor. Boy, what a mess. Made a lot of noise, too. I don't make much noise in the room. If you keep still, the teacher forgets you're there. Jimmy says he acts up in reading class so Miss Riley will get mad at him, and then she won't make him read. I like to have my turn, but I'm not very good at it. …

High School Guidance Counseling As A Vocation, Janice Elaine Tucker

The purpose of this paper is to explore the field of high school guidance counseling as a vocation. The discussion includes information regarding guidance counseling in the United States in general and Arkansas specifically. The personal and educational requirements for guidance counseling are discussed as well as the requirements for establishing an adequate counseling program in a high school.

Counseling procedures and problems are included because counseling is one of the basic responsibilities of the guidance counselor; however, these areas are discussed only generally. A detailed study would constitute a separate paper.

Modern Mathematics In Secondary Education, Sandra Lee Sawyer Jan 1968

Modern Mathematics In Secondary Education, Sandra Lee Sawyer

Honors Theses

Until recently, the mathematics curriculum in elementary and secondary schools had been relatively unchanged for a century or more. While both elementary and secondary school programs are undergoing special studies, the most extensive curriculum projects to date have been focused on the secondary school.

First, let us consider the purpose of modern math. There has been much criticism about changing from the traditional math to the modern math. As mathematician Allendoerfer explains: "More than anything else, the new math is a new approach to old ideas, a mixture of intuition, deduction, and application."

A Study Of The Curriculum Of The Natural Science Division Of Ouachita Baptist University, Natural Sciences Group

Honors Theses

In our evaluation of the curriculum of the Natural Science Division, we began by reviewing the catalogue descriptions of our courses and evaluating whether the courses meet the objectives given. To do this we divided into departments since our division is so large. Next, we wrote to Hendrix, Little Rook University, Southwestern at Memphis, and State College of Arkansas and compared their course offerings with ours. In this comparison we discovered our strengths and weaknesses and changes that need to be made in our present curriculum. In several cases we decided upon possible alterations which would aid the student going …

A Study Of What Should Characterize The Education Program Of The Mentally Retarded Child, Charolette Ann Duckett

Honors Theses

It is the purpose of this paper to explore the qualities which are necessary to a program of education of the severely mentally handicapped--those who are termed the "educable mentally retarded" and those who are termed the "trainable mentally retarded." I will give a definition of these terms, followed by a short sketch of the history of education for the mentally deficient. I will then try to give some idea of what the goals of special education have become today, and what sort of teacher attitudes, training, and educational principles should be used in relation to teaching these exceptional children.

Classical Conditioning Of Shock-Elicited Fighting Behavior In Paired Rats, Jerry T. Treadway Jan 1968

Classical Conditioning Of Shock-Elicited Fighting Behavior In Paired Rats, Jerry T. Treadway

Electronic Theses & Dissertations

The present experiment investigated the effectiveness of two methods of stimuli presentation in classically conditioning shock elicited fighting behavior in paired rats.

The results indicated that fighting responses occurred to the unconditioned stimulus (shock), however, at no time did a fighting response occur to any of the tone-alone test trials.

Therefore, it was concluded from the data in the present study that shock-elicited fighting in paired rats did not appear to be a behavior which could be classically conditioned using either a simultaneous or a random method of stimuli presentation.

Problems Teachers Face While Teaching In Mixed Racial And Ethnic Classrooms, Linda Lee Hearn Jan 1968

Problems Teachers Face While Teaching In Mixed Racial And Ethnic Classrooms, Linda Lee Hearn

Honors Theses

God taught us an important lesson: when communication stops, progress is halted. Today as then, differences not understood and a lack of communication can cause a stopping of progress.

In today's world of change, the classroom becomes the only true melting pot of our nation. As more and more peoples are brought together, the need for teachers who are able to function in such situations, becomes greater and greater. There can be no hard and fast rules for the handling of situations since the number of possible problems and occurrences surrounding them is infinite; but it must be realized that …
