There’S More (To Research Methods) Than Meets The Eye, Dane C. Joseph Jan 2019

There’S More (To Research Methods) Than Meets The Eye, Dane C. Joseph

Faculty Publications - College of Education

“Research shows that by doing this, you’ll look and feel more beautiful, improve your health and happiness, and live longer.” Such fallacious conclusions are becoming pervasive. As technology increases our capacity for connectivity and access to information – such as through social media – an abundance of false science claims has arisen. The messages target an unprecedented number of information consumers. Psychological research findings can play a positive role in human flourishing, and provide the knowledge, skills, and abilities to navigate our mental, social, and physical worlds. Unchecked and not vetted, the same results can have disastrous consequences. The purpose …

Preparing Teacher Candidates To Collaborate With Families And Communities: Standards, Research, And Practice, Karen S. Buchanan, Thomas D. Buchanan

Faculty Publications - College of Education

Preparing teacher candidates to engage with family and community in ways that align with the reality of today’s classroom is a critically important aspect of fostering student academic success and well-being. This paper examines how a set of professional preparation standards, the teacher preparation literature, and a qualitative inquiry into the practices and challenges of kindergarten teachers working with family and community converge to inform the work of teacher educators. Implications of these three sources of expert knowledge are instructive for teacher educator practice. Implications for the preparation of teacher candidates around family/community engagement include: the shaping of teacher candidate …

Faculty Publications - College of Education

In this theoretical research report we reflect on the challenges of becoming more fox-like in mathematics education work. Using a communities of practice motivating theoretical lens, we compare and discuss the differences in defining, creating, and accessing knowledge between virtual and scholarly communities of practice in mathematics education. We present four claims that virtual communities of practice in mathematics education are inherently foxy work. As part of our claims, we discuss how scholarly communities of practices are inherently hedgehog work. We conclude with a list of recommendations of those within the scholarly communities of practice in mathematics education. These recommendations …

Doctor of Education (EdD)

This study analyzed the predictive validity of key dropout indicators at the freshmen year within a rural school district. Specifically, the study examined the predictive validity of the freshmen on-track indicator and freshmen absenteeism as predictors of four year, on-time graduation attainment. While most of the Early Warning System (EWS) research has taken place in large urban and suburban schools districts, this study used secondary data spanning four years from a small, rural school district. Additionally, the study sought to explore which student academic and behavior metrics had the greatest predictive validity for the rural student sample. Binomial logistic regression …

Choosing A Doctoral Program (Chapter 1 Of Prepare, Succeed, Advance: A Guidebook For Getting A Phd In Biblical Studies And Beyond), Nijay K. Gupta Jan 2019

Choosing A Doctoral Program (Chapter 1 Of Prepare, Succeed, Advance: A Guidebook For Getting A Phd In Biblical Studies And Beyond), Nijay K. Gupta

Faculty Publications - Portland Seminary

Excerpt: "Perhaps the greatest challenge for someone wanting to become a professor in biblical studies is selecting the best kind of program and institution at which to study. Furthermore, it is not only important to calculate the various factors involved in making the decision, but also thinking through the process and contingent issues ahead of time. Practically speaking, the advice offered in this book may be utilized and applied more efficiently for someone at the beginning of his or her master's degree (or, even better, during a bachelor's degree) than, for instance, at the stage of actually applying for the …

Integers As Directed Quantities (Chapter 13 In Constructing Number), Nicole Enzinger Dec 2018

Integers As Directed Quantities (Chapter 13 In Constructing Number), Nicole Enzinger

Faculty Publications - College of Education

Mathematics education researchers have long pursued—and many still pursue—an ideal instructional model for operations on integers. In this chapter, I argue that such a pursuit may be futile. Additionally, I highlight that ideas of relativity have been overlooked; and, I contend that current uses of translation within current integer instructional models do not align with learners’ inventions. Yet, conceptions of relativity and translation are essential for making sense of integers as directed quantities. I advocate for drawing on learners’ unique conceptions and actions about directed number in developing instructional models. Providing evidence of student work from my research, I illustrate …

Master plans were analyzed for their structure, rationales, and their intended impact on students and families. Through numerous coding passes, several themes revealed themselves related to proposed benefits to students in language, academics, and social-emotional growth. The findings of this study indicated an informal community of …

Student Perceptions On The Community Of Spiritual Formation At A Faith-Based University, Jonathan R. Colburn Nov 2018

Student Perceptions On The Community Of Spiritual Formation At A Faith-Based University, Jonathan R. Colburn

Doctor of Education (EdD)

Spiritual formation has always been of utmost importance in Christian education as faithbased institutions strive to educate the whole person; body, mind, and spirit. Because of this, Christian universities work to create programs and provide activities that challenge the minds and hearts of the students in order to promote spiritual growth. This study seeks to answer the following question: What does a phenomenological analysis of the lived experiences of students at a Council for Christian Colleges & Universities (CCCU) institution reveal about their perceptions of the spiritual formation priorities of the institution? Stated another way, what do students report about …

The Future Of Undergraduate Biblical Higher Education: Abhe And The Bible College Movement, T. Scott Womble Oct 2018

The Future Of Undergraduate Biblical Higher Education: Abhe And The Bible College Movement, T. Scott Womble

Doctor of Ministry

The Bible college movement can trace its roots to the late nineteenth century and was given greater credibility when the accreditation era began in 1947. Today, the Association for Biblical Higher Education (ABHE) is still the leader of the Bible college movement. But a quick glance at the sixty-three ABHE institutions (64%) with undergraduate enrollment under 250 raises concern. Furthermore, 31 percent have enrollment under 100.

Rising costs and escalating student debt are creating enrollment challenges. The smallness of most Bible colleges makes them particularly vulnerable, especially since many lack endowments. Adding to the problem is the changing landscape of …

Dispositions: Real-Time Active Practice, Michelle C. Hughes

International Christian Community of Teacher Educators Journal

This longitudinal case study followed new teachers from one small undergraduate pre-service program into the first years of teaching. The researcher’s initial study (Hughes, 2014) examined dispositional awareness and development of participants using personal interview data from program graduates, interview data from program faculty, and archived course artifacts. The current study extends the research and shines a light on dispositional development from pre-service through the fourth year of teaching. Using personal interviews, a focus group meeting, and archived course artifacts, the study affirms the significance of dispositions in pre-service preparation and professional practice. The study validates that participants carry dispositional …

The Necessary Conversation: Faith To Sustain Teaching Practices, Stephanie Talley Sep 2018

The Necessary Conversation: Faith To Sustain Teaching Practices, Stephanie Talley

International Christian Community of Teacher Educators Journal

In this essay, the author raises critical questions about the need for faith-based teacher preparation programs to consider engaging pre-service teachers in conversations about the connection between faith and the ability to persist in the work of teaching. Grounded in the ethic of care, the author suggests educators must begin with caring for self in order to maintain the ability of caring for students. Suggestions for Christian teacher education programs are explored.

Caring For New Teachers Once They Leave Campus, Elaine Tinholt Sep 2018

Caring For New Teachers Once They Leave Campus, Elaine Tinholt

International Christian Community of Teacher Educators Journal

This essay explores one teacher educator’s motivation and ideas about how to advocate for induction support for new teachers beyond the teacher preparation program. During the undergraduate preparation process, teacher candidates are given multiple opportunities to receive support from mentor teachers and college supervisors. This support system functions through formal observations, on-going communication, and feedback concerning progression throughout the clinical practice experience. While induction programs abound across the country, students who leave small, faith-based universities often disperse to a variety of settings and support levels. The school based support offered during the first year of teaching can be insufficient or …

Introduction, Paul Shotsberger, Cathy Freytag Sep 2018

Introduction, Paul Shotsberger, Cathy Freytag

International Christian Community of Teacher Educators Journal

Why a special issue on care? It’s a fair question. As one colleague said recently, if we have the gospels, do we really need something else to tell us how others should be treated? We maintain that because of its bidirectional nature, ethic of care, and particularly Christian ethic of care, are fundamentally reflective of God’s nature. It is not just ethical but also theological: it helps us understand God's love and care for us, to see it as more than a one way street. The literature on ethic of care, especially that of Noddings, tells us that this bidirectional …
