Teaching Professionalism Skills To Secondary Students: An Improvement Science Dissertation On The Efficacy Of A Professionalism Skills System: An Improvement Science Study, James Weber

Doctor of Education (EdD)

This research provided Salem Keizer Public Schools (SKPS) with much-needed information on how to teach and grade secondary students on professional skills. The research was conducted at The Career Technical Education Center (CTEC) in Salem, Oregon. CTEC employs 35 staff members who serve 780 high school students. This research followed an improvement science dissertation in practice model (ISDiP) by implementing a 64-day Plan-Do- Study-Act (PDSA) cycle. A networked improvement community (NIC) met throughout the PDSA cycle to analyze and implement the research.

The NIC and CTEC staff developed a new system to teach, grade, and provide feedback on students' professional …

Sustaining The Growth Curve: How Christian Schools Can Sustain The Post-Covid Growth Surge, Jared B. Johnston Dec 2023

Sustaining The Growth Curve: How Christian Schools Can Sustain The Post-Covid Growth Surge, Jared B. Johnston

International Christian Community of Teacher Educators Journal

Prior to the 2019-2020 school year, the Christian school movement as a whole was in decline. However, the COVID-19 pandemic brought a surge in enrollment growth to Christian schools across the country. While this is encouraging news, Christian school leaders must be cautious and work to sustain the current growth surge. To maintain the growth surge, Christian school leaders can implement financial and non-financial factors of sustainability. Financial factors of sustainability include budgeting effectively, developing strategic plans, forecasting economic futures, and adhering to sound financial practices. Non-financial factors include a vibrant biblical worldview and Christian culture, effective leadership, a conducive …

Strategies For Christian Educators And Administrators To Move From Pre-Pandemic Vuca Reaction To Post-Pandemic Vuca 2.0 Response., Doug Atha

International Christian Community of Teacher Educators Journal

Abstract

Pre-pandemic Volatile, Uncertain, Complex and Ambiguous (VUCA) realities added specific complexity to education and administrative practice at Christian schools, influencing Christian school educators and administrator reactions to the challenges experienced in their social and professional contexts (Ungerer, Ungerer and Herholdt, 2016). Post-pandemic realities however, will require greater diligence for Christian educators and administrators. The transition from pre-pandemic reactive responses to VUCA influence on Christian school environments to applying visionary, understandable, courageous and adaptive (VUCA 2.0) strategic principles for those same environments, is a necessary strategic challenge to accept. Christian school educators and administrators wanting to support a healthy and …

Leaning Into The Disposition Of Hope: Reflections From A Teacher Educator, Michelle C. Hughes Dr.

International Christian Community of Teacher Educators Journal

Teaching is multifaceted work that must foster safety, structure, comfort, and connection for K-12 students (Noddings,1984; Shotsberger & Freytag, 2020; Tomlinson, 2019). During the Covid-19 pandemic, a teacher's presence has necessitated fostering an even greater sense of stability and hope for and in K-12 students. With complex challenges such as teaching remotely and responding to students' mental health needs, pre-service and veteran teachers alike must cultivate hope in professional practice more than ever before. Hughes explores the disposition of hope, offering educators five practical suggestions to seek and share hope, use hope-filled language, find hope in community, and view times …

Not For The Faint Of Heart: An Informal Review Of The Literature On Stress Among School Administrators, Gary F. Sehorn Dr.

Faculty Publications - College of Education

School administrators face intensifying work demands and increased scrutiny. The role is challenging and isolating. For women, minorities, rural school leaders, and those new to administration, there are additional challenges to face.

It is essential for those shaping programs to prepare future school administrators and support leaders in the field to have a thorough understanding of the many challenges that can make it difficult for school leaders to simply survive, let alone thrive. Some challenges are common to nearly all school leaders, but challenges unique to individual leaders are shaped by circumstance, personal characteristics, and choices made along the way. …

Split Labor Markets In International Schools: Perceptions Of Fairness Among Local-Hire Teachers, Rose Tyvand

Doctor of Education (EdD)

This quantitative study investigated perceptions of compensation fairness among local-hire teachers at international schools who worked in a split labor market. Under this model, localhire teachers perform the same basic job duties as their foreign-hire colleagues, yet receive far less compensation. The study employed survey research to examine potential relationships between such variables as: perceived compensation differentials, perception of foreign-hire contributions, teachers’ dependents attending the school on scholarship, perception of systems of communication and promotion, perception of compensation fairness, and willingness to support and collaborate with foreign hire teachers. 86 local-hire teachers from 7 international schools responded to online questions …

Using Your Library’S Objectives As The Organizational Framework For Library Documentation In Planning, Assessment, And Accreditation, Jennifer S. Ewing, Ruth E. Martin

The Christian Librarian

The San Diego Christian/Southern California Seminary Library1 uses its objectives as the organizational framework for its strategic plan, annual report, assessment plan, and policies and procedures manual. This article describes how the library’s objectives compare to the Association of College and Research Libraries’ Standards (to ensure best practices), relate to the areas covered in the library strategic plan, annual report, and operations manual, and correspond to the standards and criteria from their respective accrediting agencies, showing how easy it is to identify supporting evidence for a program review or self-study when using this organizing method.

Communicating Value: Understanding Adjunct Typology, Job Satisfaction Levels, And Professional Development Interests, Lisa P. Davidson Apr 2015

Communicating Value: Understanding Adjunct Typology, Job Satisfaction Levels, And Professional Development Interests, Lisa P. Davidson

Doctor of Education (EdD)

Higher education institutions are navigating budget cuts, changing enrollment, and the need to differentiate from the competition. Reductions in government funding and budgetary constraints are prompting universities to reduce the number of full-time, tenure-track faculty and rely more heavily on adjunct faculty to meet their demand for instructors. Therefore it is important to determine the distinct needs and satisfaction levels of this faculty group in order to provide appropriate resources and development opportunities for them. This study sought to determine if adjunct faculty job satisfaction levels differ based on adjunct typology (Gappa & Leslie, 1993) or institutional affiliation, and to …

The Relationship Between The Nature Of Perceived Communication, Student Achievement And District Size, Rick Molitor

Doctor of Education (EdD)

This study examines the role communication plays in relationship to student achievement levels and the student enrollment of school districts. The following primary research question was examined: What is the relationship between high schools' staff's perception of positive communication between the district office and schools and levels of students meeting state reading/language arts and math assessment standards? The foundation of this study is based on the hypotheses that an increase in a staff's positive perception of two-way communication between their school and the central office will be associated with an increase in student achievement. Existing survey data (N = 3132) …

An Administrator’S Challenge: Encouraging Teachers To Be Leaders, Ginny Birky, Scot Headley, Marc Shelton

Faculty Publications - College of Education

This article examines how high school administrators influence teacher leadership in both positive and negative ways, particularly in an educational reform environment. It specifically looks at how they encourage, discourage, and motivate involvement in teacher leadership activities. Data from two studies were collected from teacher leaders through individual interviews and multiple surveys. The findings provide additional evidence that when teacher leaders function within a collaborative leadership model, teachers find more meaning and are motivated to continue in their leadership roles.
