International Journal for Business Education

Entrepreneurship education has developed to a field of great significance, since a thoroughly carried out entrepreneurship education might serve as catalyst to enable economic growth and sustainable development. Designing A Mooc To Foster Critical Thinking And Its Application In Business Education, Claudia Zimmermann, Gernot Dreisiebner, Ph.D., Elke Höfler

International Journal for Business Education

This paper provides a didactical model for Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) to support the acquisition of 21st century skills such as critical thinking. For this purpose, the didactic triangle as a model of teaching and learning is extended to allow for the consideration of experts, resources, literacy and an all-encompassing learning space when designing digital learning settings. The “Dr. Internet” MOOC is presented as a case study for the proposed didactic model. Preliminary results from the evaluation of this MOOC indicated that the setting had met with reasonable acceptance from the participants. Based on these findings, we argue for …

The Relationship Between Classified Difficulty And Implausible Distractors In Multiple-Choice Questions, J Alexander Smith, John R. Dickinson Apr 2017

The Relationship Between Classified Difficulty And Implausible Distractors In Multiple-Choice Questions, J Alexander Smith, John R. Dickinson

International Journal for Business Education

Published banks of multiple-choice questions are ubiquitous, the questions in those banks often being classified into levels of difficulty. The specific level of difficulty into which a question is classified might or should be a function of the question’s substance. Possibly, though, insubstantive aspects of the question, such as the incidence of incorrect answers that are readily dismissed, also affect the difficulty level into which a question is classified. The present research investigates the relationship between classified question difficulty and the incidence of implausible incorrect answer options.

Promote Interculturalism, Leadership Communication, And Professionalism In Your Students: Success With A Corporate Communication Certificate, Lana W. Carnes, Marcel Robles, Faridah Awang

International Journal for Business Education

Business educators share a common interest in encouraging their students to improve intercultural, leadership communication, and professionalism skills to enable and promote increased fulfilment, character development, and advancement toward graduation, in addition to improving student employability after graduation. While career success depends on the standards and knowledge of character and behavioral traits, much more than on technical knowledge, these attributes define the qualities desired across various professions (Barnhart, 2013) in these three areas. For example, Holmes (2015) found that the values and communication rules of discourse systems may be different from that which is expected in the international workplace.

Competence-Oriented Instruction In Vocational Education In Austria: An Empirical Comparison Between Two Instructional Approaches, Peter Slepcevic-Zach, Ph.D., Sigrid Wimmer, Michaela Stock, Manuela Paechter

International Journal for Business Education

A distinct feature of the Austrian education system is its differentiation of programs in vocational education. Among these programs, the dual education system has a long tradition: Students undergo an apprenticeship in a company while also attending a vocational school in part-time. More than other forms of education, this combination of on-the-job training at the work place and instruction in vocational school requires constant adaptation to economic requirements.
Against this background, a new instructional approach, so called areas of learning with a focus on competence were introduced in the vocational school Eisenstadt in the year 2010. The introduction of this …

Enterprise-Resource-Planning-Systems (ERP-Systems) – such as SAP, BaaN, Infor LN, MS Dynamics, WinLine and BMD – are becoming increasingly important for private and public enterprises and NGOs around the globe. The use of ERP-Systems leads to changing (vocational) working routines. ERP-Systems are therefore an important subject for vocational education and – from a scientific viewpoint – a research topic of high interest. However, only a very limited number of journal articles are available that address the use of ERP-systems in the context of business education. Using Games In Business Education: An Evaluation Experiment Comparing Games To Other Selected Methods In Teaching Sustainable Development Concepts, Anna Dubel, D.Sc.

International Journal for Business Education

Simulation games are recognized as useful and effective learning tools in the business world, as they create conditions within micro-worlds where participants can experience results of different strategies, which they want to undertake. This use of strategies enables game participants to explore multi-party decision rules and analyse factors that stimulate or hinder the personally desired decision outcomes.

Within this context the purpose of the paper is to present the outcomes of an experiment evaluating and comparing an application of a serious game with other teaching methods in the academic study of sustainable development concepts as a part of bachelor’s and …

In addition to a conceptual foundation of service-learning and a literature review on the impact of service-learning, two didactic prototypes will be presented in the form of empirical case studies. The focus of this research is to describe the attitudes and perceptions of undergraduate …

Personalized Learning Instruction In Vocational Education And Training: A Design-Based Case Study On Challenges And Approaches, Andrea Zoyke

International Journal for Business Education

There are many calls for personalized learning (instruction) (in Germany ‘Individuelle Förderung’), especially for persons with special educational needs in the transition to vocational training or retraining. Teachers can find a variety of concepts and instruments to construct personalized learning. The challenge is to combine and to connect several concepts and instruments (e.g. for competence diagnosis or for transferring results of the competence diagnosis to support competence development) as we do not have the one unique instrument that guarantees personalized learning instruction. Furthermore, teachers and students have problems with the implementation of some concepts and instruments, considering the conditions, resources, …

Playing Stakeholders: Experiencing Decision Making Procedures On National And Supranational Levels, Georg Tafner, Ph.D., Verena Liszt-Rohlf, Ph.D.

International Journal for Business Education

The European Union is a unique “postnational construction” (Habermas 1998) which is much more integrated than other international institutions. Nevertheless, it is not a country with some sort of nation-wide history or culture. In its core, it is a union of different member states serving as a platform for common decisions. Citizens of the EU are both citizens of the national state and of the European Union. Its uniqueness and complexity makes the EU to a didactic and pedagogical challenge (Tafner 2012): Firstly, introductory lessons usually present the topic EU from a legal perspective. But legal topics can be boring …
