“Listen To Me” – A Systematic Literature Review About Learning From Others’ Failure Narrations, Verena Liszt-Rohlf
International Journal for Business Education
The dedicated stream of learning from others’ failure has gained increasing attention in entrepreneurship education research and—because of the COVID-19 crisis—among practitioners. The emerging literature on entrepreneurship education addresses this important phenomenon but lacks specific theoretical underpinnings; its new approaches to and empirical inquiry are one-sided. Therefore, a systematic literature review is warranted to provide a more comprehensive view of learning from others’ entrepreneurial failures and to develop a research model. Unprecedentedly, the author explores the type of research streams and gaps that can be included in a research model for entrepreneurship education research in the area of learning from …

Project-based experiential business education seeks to provide students with lessons that are meaningful, practical, and enduring. While previous research has sought to understand how students and faculty members react to such educational experiences, it is also important to understand the perceptions of the business clients who engage with programs employing project-based education. The aim of this study was to better understand the experiences of business clients with whom students engaged as part of an undergraduate business capstone course. Two hundred fifty-three previous clients were surveyed with a 22.4% response rate. Responses were subjected to content analysis to cluster replies into …
Promoting Employer Desired Competencies Through A Multiphased "Workgroup" Project, Ashly Smith
Promoting Employer Desired Competencies Through A Multiphased "Workgroup" Project, Ashly Smith
International Journal for Business Education
Employers and business leaders have long been advocating for the importance of career readiness skills like critical thinking/problem solving, information literacy, teamwork/collaboration, professionalism/work ethic, and oral/written communication (NACE, 2019; Partnership, 2008). While faculty and students see value in projects that develop these skills, such projects can be some of the most challenging to incorporate effectively into business courses (Chapman et al., 2010; Detmering & Johnson, 2012; Lee et al., 2016; Marks & O’Connor, 2013). This article reports on a multi-phase group project that aims to strengthen a selection of these employer-desired skills while ameliorating student concerns about the research process …

Stimulating Intrapreneurial Intentions With Digital Business Training In The Vet Sector: The Potential Of Massive Open Online Courses, Christian Friedl
International Journal for Business Education
It has become imperative to stimulate and support employees to behave entrepreneurially within organizations (intrapreneurship). However, little is known about how digital, massive, and scalable business education and training formats such as massive open online course (MOOCs) can contribute to vocational and educational training (VET) in general, and to nurture intrapreneurial behavior and corresponding intentions in specific. Therefore, the purpose of this paper is to explore the potential effect of a MOOC on intrapreneurial intentions of learners.
Data were acquired from 412 employees taking a MOOC on intrapreneurship for constructs embedded in the theory of planned behavior, tailored to the …

International Journal for Business Education
There is no doubt that the increasing use of technology and digitalization leads to a more differentiated discussion of the digital transformation in work and daily life. The digital transformation can now be regarded as central technological and social phenomenon (Fürst, 2019). It has triggered a hype. To “be digital” is now the basic requirement for work and the participation in society (Hartmann et al., 2019; Mertala, 2019). To get digital, it is important to keep pace with the social, cultural, and economic changes which are driven by the digital transformation. Educational institutions over all levels of education are concerned …

Business schools continuously improve their processes and program assessment activities, but fall short in achieving faculty's awareness of process steps and disseminating results to inform and trigger continuous improvement actions. The assessment process of the Craig School of Business at California State University, Fresno had worked well. It evaluated student learning of core competencies of its Business Administration degree programs. The assessment process had a sound set of program goals and student learning outcomes and metrics. Learning outcomes were measured semiannually, and reports were written annually. Assessment results consistently surpassed benchmarks. Still, the assessment process did not effectively disseminate results …

Rubrics And Teamwork Development In Online Higher Education Business Courses: Exploring The Connection, Maureen Snow Andrade, Jill Jasperson, Ronald Mellado Miller
International Journal for Business Education
Effective teamwork is important in higher education business courses to prepare students for future professional contexts. Learning outcomes resulting from teamwork include motivation, knowledge retention, deep learning, critical thinking, and professional competency development. Effective teams typically work toward a common goal. When teams know what that goal is, they can collaborate and share their skills to achieve it. Instructors can assist in this process by making assignment goals clear through the use of rubrics that outline assignment expectations and by providing feedback to help students achieve the goals. This study examined the use of teamwork and rubrics in three different …

The Benefits Of Volunteering, Volunteers’ Competencies, And Their Integration Into Business Education, Verena Liszt-Rohlf, Marion Fields, Karl-Heinz Gerholz, Victor Seco, Christina Haury
International Journal for Business Education
During voluntary work, volunteers acquire valuable new knowledge and skills, but they often do not recognize these newly developed competencies, cannot apply them in further education, and fail to make others, including potential employers, aware of them. The classification and validation of these competencies can help to facilitate the transfer of volunteers’ competencies within the volunteer and labor markets; however, the required steps for validation of the acquired competencies are frequently complicated or unclear for volunteers. Additionally, accepted ways of validating are lacking in labor market. This paper starts by presenting the value and benefits of volunteering, especially in a …

Evaluating The Influence Of Venue On Experiential, Project-Based Learning, Wayne Aho, Ed Wright, Jon Marvel
Evaluating The Influence Of Venue On Experiential, Project-Based Learning, Wayne Aho, Ed Wright, Jon Marvel
International Journal for Business Education
Experiential, project-based learning is widely endorsed as an effective pedagogy for enhancing the understanding of theory, increasing critical thinking skills, and preparing students for future roles as contributing employees. Likewise, the use of online classes at universities is becoming popular. A logical evolution of course venues would be the appearance of project-based, online courses. However, there is scant research on whether online, experiential learning is as effective as face-to-face courses. In this study, comparisons are made between online and face-to-face classes of a project-based, strategic management course at a regional university. No statistically significant differences were found in the course …

Revenge Of The Nerds Revisited: Do Accounting And Finance Majors Differ From Other Business Majors In Their Learning Styles, And Do They Earn Higher Grades In A General Business Course?, Todd J. Hostager Ph.D.
International Journal for Business Education
Decades of research spanning a range of educational domains have confirmed that students differ in their learning styles and that student performance is impacted by the degree of fit between these styles and the teaching and assessment methods deployed in courses (Allinson & Hayes, 1988; Cegielski, Hazen & Rainer, 2011; Drissi & Amirat, 2017; Honn & Ugrin, 2012; Visser, McChlery & Vreken, 2006.) In this study, the researchers investigate whether a capstone business course— designed to accommodate a diverse range of learning styles— can succeed in leveling the playing field, yielding results showing no significant differences in course grades as …

What Must A Lecturer/Instructor (Teacher) Be Able To Do To Inspire Entrepreneurship And Business Students?, Hely Westerholm, Ph.D., Pirjo Takanen-Körperich, Ph.D.
International Journal for Business Education
This paper discusses what a lecturer/instructor (teacher) must be able to do to inspire entrepreneurship and business students. Entrepreneurship, particularly start‐up business, has become a top priority in national government policies due to its ability to drive creativity, innovation, competitiveness,
employment and growth. The goal is not to make the students rush to become entrepreneurs or business‐oriented professionals but rather provide them with tools that enable realistic self‐evaluations and learn to recognize different opportunities around them. The study seeks to define the skill sets that the inspiring entrepreneurship and business teachers consider essential to their work. Teachers expressed their views …
