St. Mary's Mission is situated five miles outside Omak, Washington, on the Colville Indian Reservation. It operates boarding and school facilities for one hundred and seventy Indian children in grades one through eight. Although the school has been in operation for ninety years, and is the only elementary boarding school for Indian children in the state, it has never developed or been provided with a written curriculum.

With so many schools taking a serious look at teaming procedures, our educational system is becoming more open to new innovative programs, cooperative planning, and a variety of staff utilization possibilities. A first year teacher or teacher new to team teaching may find such a program too challenging unless a situation is provided to orient the prospective teacher into an open-concept, nongraded, or flexible building where team teaching is taking place.

The purposes of this study were (1) to determine the degree of individual growth in reading ability made by the pupils enrolled in the Reading Improvement classes at the Emerson Elementary School, Seattle, Washington, during the 1957-1958 school year; (2) to keep an accurate record and description of techniques and materials used in securing this individual growth; and (3) to present the findings in a form that might be of assistance to other teachers in developing similar programs.

The small high school has some problems to overcome in order to do an effective job in the guidance of its young people. It is difficult for the staff to find time for guidance activities in the busy schedule of today's curriculum. Released time is very necessary if effective counseling is to be done.
Another problan to be faced is the lack of trained personnel to head the guidance program. The high school principal must find a capable person or else head the program himself.
