There are many health related benefits of participating in regular physical activity. A well-designed elementary physical education program will promote lifetime physical activity that may reduce the risk of disease. In implementing a quality curriculum for physical education, educators need to take in to account the standards when deciding the direction for their curriculum (NASPE, 2005). According to the Washington State Office of the Superintendent of Public Instruction (2008), physical education includes curriculum, instruction and assessment all implemented together. This project addresses the need for meaningful and convenient assessment tools.

The activities will help to gain attention and engagement of students. The activities in the handbook are to be used as a supplement to any existing elementary curriculum. The benefits of balancing the physical, mental, and psychological well being of adolescents, was researched. The research suggests that yoga is a discipline that can greatly enhance the Washington State Health and Fitness Essential Academic Leaming Requirements, which are designed to give the student skills to Jive a healthy and active life. Lesson plans with illustrations have been created, which can assist educators in incorporating yoga into the existing physical education curriculum. Instructions are given on how to use the lesson plans, how to adapt them, and suggestions for educators to create their own lesson plans.

A middle school physical education program designed to integrate fitness skills and lifetime activities into the physical education curriculum was implemented. Ways to improve fitness, increase participation, improve skills, provide competition and cooperation, and develop knowledge and values related to physical activity were researched and implemented. A curriculum guide from first quarter through fourth quarter was provided with expected student outcomes identified. An explanation of the rationale for conducting each of the separate activities in any modified format was stated. A handbook of fitness and lifetime activities was provided as a resource for other physical education teachers.

The handbook allows students to utilize the skills they have learned in the classroom by participating in service-learning activities in their community. The purpose of this project was to explore existing standard operating procedures of athletic leagues from around the State of Washington and to develop a Standard Operating Procedures Manual for use by the South Central "A" League of District IV of the Washington Interscholastic Activities Association. The results showed that although all leagues are required to have such a manual, the governing body of high school athletics, Washington Interscholastic Activities Association (W.I.A.A.), recommended that only five league handbooks be used as models toward the development of this project.
