Relationships Between Expressive And Receptive Language Ability And Play Initiation In 2-Year-Olds, Jessica Glasshoff
Relationships Between Expressive And Receptive Language Ability And Play Initiation In 2-Year-Olds, Jessica Glasshoff
UNO Student Research and Creative Activity Fair
For most young children, social initiations develop during natural play contexts, along with language. However, not all children learn language typically from an early age. At 2 years of age, these children are generally referred to as “late talkers” or as having “late language emergence” (LLE). LLE usually involves between 10-15 percent of 2-year-olds. Delayed language development is associated with delays in play sophistication; however, little is known about the association between LLE and child initiations during play. The purpose of the study was to further determine the relationship between receptive and expressive language proficiency and play initiation for toddlers. …

Use Of Video Technology To Support Soft Skills Acquisition For Enhancing Employment Opportunities For Individuals With Autism, Intellectual And Developmental Disabilities, Cliff Guya Oliech M.S.Ed., Edith Olajumoke Oshokoya Ma.Ed.
Graduate Student Research Symposium
Preparing individuals with Autism and Intellectual Disabilities for work is an accountability issue established through Indicators 13 and 14 of the State's Performance Plan in the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (2004) (IDEA, 2004). Unfortunately, transitioning into jobs for individuals with Autism (ASD) or intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) has not been very successful to date because of the need for growth in their soft skills acquisition and use. The purpose of this systematic literature review was to establish the types of video technology (VT) used in teaching soft skills that may enhance employment opportunities for individuals with ASD and …
Unpacking The Academic Interventions For Improving The Academic Skills Of Black Girls With Disabilities: A Scoping Review, Olajumoke Oshokoya
Unpacking The Academic Interventions For Improving The Academic Skills Of Black Girls With Disabilities: A Scoping Review, Olajumoke Oshokoya
Graduate Student Research Symposium
Most research on Black girls seem to have focused more on their behaviors (Morris, 2007), when compared to their White peers. It is even worse for Black Girls with Disabilities (BGDs) who have continued to be academically marginalized at the intersection of race, gender, and disability. Given the long history of special education research on improving the academic achievement of students with disabilities and the sustained representation of Black children receiving special education services across United States’ K-12 schools (Skiba et al., 2005), it becomes critical to systematically scope the academic interventions that have been used to improve the academic …
The Effects Of Communication Disorders In Individuals With Down Syndrome And How To Help Them Succeed, Shelby Louise Bradley
The Effects Of Communication Disorders In Individuals With Down Syndrome And How To Help Them Succeed, Shelby Louise Bradley
Scholars Day Conference
According to recent studies conducted by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, nearly 1 in every 700 babies born is diagnosed with Down syndrome, resulting in almost 6,000 babies diagnosed in the U.S. every year. Down syndrome, also referred to as DS, comes with some physical and mental differences. Because of these differences, individuals with Down syndrome and their families face many challenges when communicating, and these challenges affect all aspects of life. An increased awareness and knowledge could hopefully and effectively address some of these communication challenges for patients with whom the speech-language pathology profession may work with …

Girlhood has been a topic of great interest in the last decade. As individuals have examined the lack of girls in STEM or the increase of bullying in girls, there has been a push to understanding the differential experiences along gender-based lines. In this study, the researchers highlight the results of the successful implementation of a group-based curriculum that utilized identity and advocacy as critical components in a treatment package focused on self-regulation. Using a pretest-posttest design, the researchers found a statistically significant difference in several key areas that are of key importance when supporting the needs of adolescent girls. …

Using a "real" grocery list, cash money, and an unexpected situation, attendees put themselves in the shoes (or socks) of the children-at-risk and families who need support in a hands on, solution centered workshop. Workshop participants walk away with culturally relevant materials that will allow them to find funding for a 6'x8' corner of hope--at little or no cash cost. But that makes all the difference in the world.

Instructional Scaffolding Of The Acrl Framework For Information Literacy For Developmental Learners., Fabio Montella
Instructional Scaffolding Of The Acrl Framework For Information Literacy For Developmental Learners., Fabio Montella
Georgia International Conference on Information Literacy
Information literacy has become a necessary set of abilities for community college students to possess in this age of digital distribution. The plethora of information that is generated at an almost instantaneous rate has brought about the need for an information-literate student body with the ability to both decipher and utilize viable and valid information. However, the attainment of such abilities requires the comprehension of information literacy core concepts. These concepts, while instrumental, may be difficult to grasp without a foundation of practical familiarity, especially for students in developmental education courses.
In this presentation, Fabio Montella, Assistant Professor of Library …

How Have We Improved? Exploring Racial Inequalities In Special Education, Erin Greer
How Have We Improved? Exploring Racial Inequalities In Special Education, Erin Greer
Student Symposium
This Independent Study explored the racial inequalities noted within the field of special education, particularly related to identification for certain disability categories and eligibility for special education services. An example of this would be more African American males being identified as having an Emotional Behavior Disorder, Learning Disability, or Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder. More severe disciplinary practices can also be noted among male, African American students with and without disabilities. Racial inequalities have been well documented in special education, even prior to the first special education law in 1975. Since then, awareness of racial inequalities when identifying students with disabilities …

Harmonizing Social Emotional Learning For Students With Special Needs, Deema Shihadih
Scholarly and Creative Works Conference (2015 - 2021)
Students with intellectual disabilities (ID) typically face difficulties with social emotional skill sets, yet many classrooms for students with ID do not incorporate social emotional learning in the curriculum. Modifying SEL programs to fit the needs of students may be an improved solution, however, little research exists exploring the effects of modifying various SEL programs to fit the needs of students with intellectual disabilities (ID). This research explores the benefits of modifying multiple social emotional learning (SEL) programs to best fit the needs of students with intellectual disabilities. Qualitative methods were used in order to investigate how SEL programs and …
The Effects Of A Mindfulness-Based Intervention On Middle School Special Education Students, Michelle Castillo
The Effects Of A Mindfulness-Based Intervention On Middle School Special Education Students, Michelle Castillo
Scholarly and Creative Works Conference (2015 - 2021)
Abstract
Adolescence is a vulnerable period to a child’s emotional and social environment due to the puberty-related changes in hormones, which has an effect on their judgement, impulse control, and emotional regulation. Middle school students face several daily stressors at school, at home, and in their communities. Although adolescents face stressors in and out of school, a mindfulness-based intervention (MBI) can be beneficial. This research focuses on the effects of a mindfulness-based intervention on Latino middle school special education students in regards to their attention and behavior in general education classes as well as their self-perception. While prior studies address …
Language Interventions And Social-Emotional Learning Helps Students Who Are Emotionally Disturbed, Megan Walsh
Language Interventions And Social-Emotional Learning Helps Students Who Are Emotionally Disturbed, Megan Walsh
Scholarly and Creative Works Conference (2015 - 2021)
Students who are classified as being Emotionally Disturbed (ED) often struggle in the general education classroom setting because they do not receive the proper support to be the most successful. Many teachers do not understand how to work with these students due to a lack of training and understanding of the disability. Additionally, these students who typically have behavioral issues will continue to act out without forming interpersonal relationships with their teacher. Although research has demonstrated some understanding of working with these students, few studies have explored the use of language interventions and social-emotional learning to promote positive student-teacher relationships. …
Life Skills For Life-Long Learners: Teaching Functional Skills To Elementary Students With Special Needs, Emily H. Derecat
Life Skills For Life-Long Learners: Teaching Functional Skills To Elementary Students With Special Needs, Emily H. Derecat
Scholarly and Creative Works Conference (2015 - 2021)
Though extensive studies exist regarding teaching life skills at the middle school and high school level in special education to support transition, a comparable amount of research is still needed to support the need for the use of life skills-based programs in elementary special education programs. The purpose of this study was to investigate how a six-week intervention using research-based practices to target specific life skills impacted 2nd - 5th grade students with moderate to severe disabilities. The skill areas that were targeted: hygiene (hand-washing), social skills (appropriate greetings) and money skills (collecting money). The life skills were worked on …
Fun Reading Practice?: Strategies And Evidence From A One-On-One Reading Intervention, Caddabra Brown
Fun Reading Practice?: Strategies And Evidence From A One-On-One Reading Intervention, Caddabra Brown
Andrews University Teaching and Learning Conference
Based on the Response To Intervention (RTI) model, about 5% - 10% of students do not respond to generalized or small group instruction. These students need direct instruction delivered with an individualized format during which they receive an increased number of opportunities to practice with immediate corrective feedback. However, these practice sessions can be met with resistance. This is moreso the reality among at-risk readers and boys. In this presentation, creative, engaging, multisensory approaches useful for practicing reading skills will be discussed and demonstrated. These approaches are useful for teachers, school psychologists, interventionists, and parents.
You Must Know Them Before You Can Grow Them, Beatrice "Bea" Lewis
You Must Know Them Before You Can Grow Them, Beatrice "Bea" Lewis
National Youth Advocacy and Resilience Conference
It is an inescapable truth that schools must learn as much about their students and their experiences in order to create a culture built on relationships, which is the cornerstone to student learning. The dynamics and complexities of building positive relationships with students are impacted when teachers’ attitudes, values, and biases conflict with school culture. In this interactive “real talk” session, participants will examine their own biases and attitudes that may be hindering the cultivation of positive relationships. Participants will be introduced to a variety of approaches that can be used to evaluate the values, beliefs, and attitudes that are …

Silence often accompanies topics about disability, sexuality, and gender identity. This panel of Lesley students, alumni, and faculty discuss the issue of silence involving social stigma and ignorance that can often lead to violence against people with disabilities. The panelists participated in an interdisciplinary course, Disability Studies, in which students chose to research these topics for their social action projects and papers. Panelists who see themselves as allies and/or self-identify as disabled share their research, personal experiences, and interviews with the audience to provide insights into some of the systematic exclusion of people with disabilities in these discussions, particularly in …
Social Interventions For Young Children With Autism Spectrum Disorder: A Systematic Review Of Research, Lauren E. Weiss
Social Interventions For Young Children With Autism Spectrum Disorder: A Systematic Review Of Research, Lauren E. Weiss
Shared Knowledge Conference
Individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) face a variety of barriers in social, communicative, and behavioral functioning. In particular, children with ASD have deficits in social behavior that decrease opportunities to socialize and develop peer relationships (Kroeger, Schultz, & Newsom, 2006). A child’s early development of social skills has been linked to successful school adjustment and academic achievement while preschoolers with poor social behavior experience peer rejection, low academic achievement, and behavior problems (McClelland & Morrison, 2003). I conducted a systematic review of research on interventions that provided positive social outcomes for young children with ASD. Results from this study …
Defining Access And Opportunity Barriers In Inclusive Educational Environments: A Synthesis Of The Research, Peggy A. Duffie
Defining Access And Opportunity Barriers In Inclusive Educational Environments: A Synthesis Of The Research, Peggy A. Duffie
Shared Knowledge Conference
Every Student Succeeds Act (2015) is legislation that supports every child’s right to quality education, while the Individuals with Disabilities Act (IDEA, 2004) specifically addresses the rights of students with disabilities. IDEA (2004) states that all children with disabilities, including students with extensive support needs (ESN), should receive grade-level instruction in general education classrooms alongside their peers to “the maximum extent appropriate” (IDEA, 2004). Unfortunately, students with extensive support needs (ESN) often experience obstacles that impede their ability to access educational opportunities in the general education setting (Pufpaff, 2008). Ruppar, Dymond, and Gaffney (2011) stated that academic instruction offered in …
