Journal of Student Financial Aid
Although student loan debt has been rigorously studied over the past several decades, scant research has investigated how institutions of higher education communicate debt to current and former student borrowers. As COVID-19 forced the United States Department of Education to cancel the Annual Student Loan Acknowledgement as part of a student’s signing of the master promissory note (MPN), there are no other mechanisms for students to be aware of their student loan debt beyond a debt letter from their institution or reviewing their National Student Loan Debt System (NSLDS) portal. This applied linguistics study surveyed 2,030 current student loan borrowers …

Constructing A Clear Definition Of Neotraditional Students And Illuminating Their Financial Aid, Academic, And Non-Academic Experiences And Outcomes In The 21st Century, Tuan D. Nguyen, Jenna W. Kramer
Journal of Student Financial Aid
Decades of research related to the experience of postsecondary students who are adults, work full-time, or have other life roles have not led to agreement in the field regarding who is a “nontraditional” college student. This study leverages nationally representative data to illuminate shifts in this student population in the 21st century and builds a picture of their demographics, financial aid receipt, and academic experiences. Our results suggest that, in order to capture the diversity of the 21st century students and ubiquity of students with multiple life roles, we need to carefully define this student population; the use …

Indebted To My Education: Examining College Graduates’ Perceptions Of Student Loan Repayment, Vincent D. Carales, Mauricio Molina
Journal of Student Financial Aid
In this paper, we examine college graduates’ perceptions of entering student loan repayment and how they navigated this process. Findings highlight the importance of helping students make informed borrowing decisions, particularly as they begin repaying their student loan debt. Policy makers wishing to hold institutions accountable for keeping college affordable while enhancing financial aid policy will gain further insight.

Alternative Techniques For Blind Low Vision Students Enrolled In Coding Courses, Robert Jaquiss
Alternative Techniques For Blind Low Vision Students Enrolled In Coding Courses, Robert Jaquiss
Journal of Science Education for Students with Disabilities
BLV (blind low vision) students face difficulties when taking coding classes. Individual Development Environments (IDE) can be inaccessible which make it difficult if not impossible for BLV students to complete coursework. Alternative techniques are described which will allow a BLV student to successfully complete coursework. The author has found the Command Line Interface (CLI) is often a recommended alternative to a Windows based IDE interface. Many blind computer programmers use the Windows and Linux command interfaces which are described as part of this discussion.

College of Education and Human Sciences: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Higher education culture is steeped in institutional identity and ties to history. But what happens when that history is challenged, and an institution must change its name? While a merger was not initially intended for Kearney State College, merging into the University of Nebraska system was the only way to reflect the change and growth that emulated the type of institution it had become. By interviewing sixteen participants that lived the experience of the merge, a concise and collective history of the events that led to the creation of the University of Nebraska at Kearney was obtained and studied. Through …

Methods: A descriptive and exploratory cross-sectional survey was used with a voluntary convenience sample of 211 university DPT students during Fall 2020 full-time clinical experiences. Descriptive and inferential statistics evaluated differences in Flex and residential DPT program …

Delusions, Demographics, And Denial: Higher Education's Future In Kentucky And Elsewhere, Aaron W. Hughey, Karl Laves
Faculty/Staff Personal Papers
It doesn’t take a genius to see that everything is not quite right in higher education these days. The feeling that things can’t go on as they have in the past is slowing sinking in for those associated with our colleges and universities. A day of reckoning is coming.
As most college students can attest, the cost of attending college continues to escalate exponentially while the return on that investment is increasingly suspect. The average student loan debt incurred per student is around $38,000, while the average annual salary a newly minted college graduate in Kentucky can expect to earn …

Leadership And “Followership”: Do Department Chairs Actually Have “Followers”?, Jeff Buller
Leadership And “Followership”: Do Department Chairs Actually Have “Followers”?, Jeff Buller
Academic Chairpersons Conference Proceedings
There is a paradox in higher education: Everyone agrees that good, creative leadership is essential … but no one wants to be led. Most books on leadership or management discuss a leader's "followers" or use some other expression (such as team members, direct reports, or associates) that appears to suggest a different sort of relationship but, when examined carefully, is really just a euphemism for followers. The chair role in higher education is distinctive, however, in that, although it includes supervisory aspects, the members of our departments are also our colleagues. So, how do you lead when you don't really …
