Portfolio Liquidity And Share Turnover Of Closed-End Mutual Funds, Charles P. Cullinan, Xiaochuan Zheng, Elena Precourt
Portfolio Liquidity And Share Turnover Of Closed-End Mutual Funds, Charles P. Cullinan, Xiaochuan Zheng, Elena Precourt
Accounting Department Faculty Journal Articles
We examine the relationship between the liquidity of the portfolios of closed-end mutual funds and the share turnover of closed-end funds' shares. We find that the portfolio liquidity/share turnover relationship is contingent upon the nature of the funds' shareholders. For funds with mainly smaller shareholders, there is a negative relationship between portfolio liquidity and share turnover, suggesting that smaller investors are more likely to hold shares of these funds to avoid the transaction costs associated with trading. However, as more institutional investors hold fund shares, portfolio liquidity is positively associated with share turnover.

Misconduct And Fraud By Investment Managers, Stephen G. Dimmock, Joseph D. Farizo, William C. Gerken
Misconduct And Fraud By Investment Managers, Stephen G. Dimmock, Joseph D. Farizo, William C. Gerken
Finance and Quantitative Methods Research Data
We document the prevalence and variety of frauds committed by investment managers. We show that prior legal and regulatory violations, conflicts-of-interest, and monitoring disclosures available via the Security and Exchange Commission’s Form ADV are useful for predicting fraud. Additional tests show that fraud by rogue employees is more predictable than firm-wide fraud, but both types of fraud are significantly predictable. We revisit the fraud prediction model of Dimmock and Gerken (2012) and test its performance out-of-sample (using fraud cases discovered since that article’s publication). We find the model has significant predictive power for the out-of-sample cases. To encourage additional research …
A Meta-Analytic Investigation Of The Relationship Between Anthropomorphism And Consumers’ Responses: Effects, Mechanism, And Boundary Conditions, Franklin G. Velasco
A Meta-Analytic Investigation Of The Relationship Between Anthropomorphism And Consumers’ Responses: Effects, Mechanism, And Boundary Conditions, Franklin G. Velasco
Marketing Dissertations
Almost one in three brands sold to adults and more than five in six brands sold to children use some form of anthropomorphic representation in promoting their products. Marketers probably hold an inherent belief that anthropomorphism increases consumer preference for their products. Extant research, however, offers no clear evidence to support this. Such mixed findings suggest that this is a prolific and complex problem that could benefit from a synthesis of research on the topic. In response to this call, this dissertation presents two essays applying the meta-analytic approach to understand where the inconsistency comes from and to identify the …

Marketing Ploy Or Strategic Initiative? An Investigation Of Deceptive Advertising, Pamela A. Richardson-Greenfield
Business Administration Dissertations
The number of commercial messages that consumers are exposed to on a daily bases is unknown, although some experts estimate it is at least 500 ads per day. Most pundits in the field of advertising agree that it is ubiquitous. For advertisers and marketers, it is critical for them to create advertising messages that break through the clutter and capture the attention of today’s consumers—who are distracted and overwhelmed. One tactic that practitioners employ to capture consumers’ attention in this challenging environment is deceptive advertising, which exaggerates—or even lies—about the attributes of a promoted product. This dissertation explores this topic …

Two Timing Work And Home, The Relationship Of Individual Values With Boundary Permeability Preference And Boundary Permeability Behavior, Faezeh Amirkamali
Management Dissertations
Boundary theory (Ashforth et al., 2000, Clark, 2000; Nippert-Eng, 1996) discusses how individuals build, keep, arrange, and cross the boundaries around work and family domains. However, the process through which people manage boundaries in work and home domains is not well-understood. In this study, I focused on boundary permeability as the key factor that explains how boundaries differ on the integration-segmentation continuum and investigated how people manage the boundaries of home and work domains. I proposed that individual values including achievement, hedonism, stimulation, and tradition are directly and indirectly associated with work-to-home and home-to-work permeability preference through work role identity …

When Cognition Interferes With Innovation: Overcoming Cognitive Obstacles To Design Thinking, Allison G. Butler, Michael A. Roberto
Management Department Faculty Journal Articles
Many organizations have become enamored with design thinking. As breakthrough innovation becomes the default mode for corporate growth, design thinking offers a structured methodology for generating innovation—a clear process that begins with ethnographic research to develop empathy and define user needs, then moves to ideation to explore possible solutions for improving the user experience, then refines concepts through an iterative process of prototyping and testing. Proponents such as IDEO founder David Kelley suggest that design thinking means innovation need not be the sole domain of the creative genius (Kelley and Kelley 2013). The appeal is easy to see: the design …
