Hrm As Chameleon: Is Soft Hrm Rhetoric Used To Disguise An Increase In Managment Control?, Carol Gill Jul 2002

Hrm As Chameleon: Is Soft Hrm Rhetoric Used To Disguise An Increase In Managment Control?, Carol Gill

Carol Gill

The Critical Perspective proposes that HRM is ineffective, suggesting that only a name change differentiates HRM and its precursor Personnel. Simultaneously, it presents HRM as a predator that uses rhetoric to disguise an increase in management control. This research examines these propositions from the Critical Perspective through a survey sent to Human Resource Managers in 896 large, Australian organizations. The results challenge the propositions of the Critical Perspective indicating that HRM has been implemented in rhetoric and reality. The results also show that HRM does not manipulate the workforce to increase management control by using soft rhetoric to obscure hard …

A Healthcare Staff Decision Model Considering The Effects Of Staff Cross-Training, Barry King Dec 1998

A Healthcare Staff Decision Model Considering The Effects Of Staff Cross-Training, Barry King

Barry E. King

In this study a staff planning model for a health service clinic has been developed and validated using an example case of a health service clinic. The primary purpose of this research is to develop a representative staff planning model which balances the cost and benefits of staff task flexibility through cross-training for a healthcare facility. Additionally, legal requirements (or task substitution in the healthcare industry have been considered in the model.

The Effect Of Study Skills Training Intervention On United States Air Force Aeromedical Apprentices, John C. Griffith Jul 1998

The Effect Of Study Skills Training Intervention On United States Air Force Aeromedical Apprentices, John C. Griffith

John Griffith

The study examined the effects of a study skills training intervention course on U.S. Air Force Aeromedical Apprentices with five main purposes. The first was to examine the relationship between study skills training and the number of times students required academic interventions outside normal class time. The second purpose was to examine the relationship between study skills training and end of course averages. The third was to determine the relationship between study skills training and the amount of additional instruction, measured in time, students required. The fourth purpose examined the relationship between study skills training and graduation rates. The final …

Can We Believe In Cold Showers?, Neil Campbell Feb 1998

Can We Believe In Cold Showers?, Neil Campbell

Neil Campbell

This paper considers the case of a firm which faces the decision as to whether to invest in a cost-reducing technology with an uncertain return. Under certain conditions the removal of protection can facilitate this investment (a 'cold shower'). It is shown, in the case of Cournot competition, that a cold shower is more likely if a quota rather than a tariff is the protective instrument. It is also shown that a cold shower is more likely if the domestic firm is a Stackelberg leader rather than a Cournot competitior. A Cournot market structure is used to consider a reduction …

Social Contracting As A Trust Building Process Of Network Governance, Lawrence Lad, Jerry Calton Dec 1994

Social Contracting As A Trust Building Process Of Network Governance, Lawrence Lad, Jerry Calton

Lawrence J. Lad

Social contracting has a long and important place in the history of political philosophy (Hardin, 1991; Waldron, 1989) and as a theory of justice (Baynes, 1989; Rawls, 1971). More recently, it has been developed into an individual rights-based theory of organizations (Keeley, 1980, 1988), and as a way to integrate ethics and moral legitimacy into corporate strategy and action (Donaldson, 1982; Freeman & Gilbert, 1988). Currently, it is being proposed as an integrative theory of economic ethics (Donaldson & Dunfee, forthcoming). This paper will extend the Donaldson and Dunfee approach by arguing that social contracting can best be understood and …

The Relative Significance Of Forecast Errors In Multistage Manufacturing, L. Ritzman, Barry King Dec 1992

The Relative Significance Of Forecast Errors In Multistage Manufacturing, L. Ritzman, Barry King

Barry E. King

It is intuitive that controlling forecast errors should result in better customer service and lower inventories. But forecast errors come from various sources. Multistage manufacturing experiences supply and lead-time uncertainties as well as demand uncertainties, and manufacturing has more than one lever to pull when addressing these uncertainties. The relationship of forecast errors to manufacturing performance is not clear. Furthermore, the pursuit of forecast accuracy may not be the best use of managerial resources. In this study, using a many-factored manufacturing simulation, we examine two components of forecast errors, the mix of special and standard products, lot-sizing, and buffering policies …

Master Production Scheduling, Customer Service And Manufacturing Flexibility In An Assemble-To-Order Environment, Barry King, W. Benton Dec 1987

Master Production Scheduling, Customer Service And Manufacturing Flexibility In An Assemble-To-Order Environment, Barry King, W. Benton

Barry E. King

A key element of manufacturing planning and control involves the interfunctional coordination of various manufacturing requirements. This paper reports the results of a simulation experiment that compares alternative master production scheduling (MPS) procedures in an assemble-to-order environment. The MPS procedures are superbills and covering sets. For a given investment in safety stocks the managerial problem is how to construct the MPS in order to minimize the firm's delivery time pressures. The results of the simulation experiment strongly support the use of the superbill techniques over the covering set technique. Moreover, of the experimental factors that influence delivery time performance, the …

Alternative Master Production Scheduling Techniques In An Assemble-To-Order Environment., Barry King, W. Benton

Barry E. King

The manufacturer's ability to respond quickly and with great flexibility is crucial. The future belongs to the manufacturer of high tech, high-value products who can compress not only component and assembly process times, but design and tooling cycles as well. Master production scheduling provides a road map for production requirements. This article reports the results of a simulation study that compares alternative procedures for determining master production scheduling (MPS) techniques utilizing the superbill and covering set MPS. The performance criterion for the study is the available-to-promise (ATP) lead time (customer service). The results of the simulation experiment support the superiority …

Shaping The Manufacturing Environment, L. Krajewski, Barry King, L. Ritzman, D. Wong Dec 1986

Shaping The Manufacturing Environment, L. Krajewski, Barry King, L. Ritzman, D. Wong

Barry E. King

There has been a great deal of interest recently in the Japanese approach to manufacturing, growing out of a concern for finding ways to reduce inventories and increase productivity. At this project's inception, its objective was to assess whether the kanban system could perform well in the manufacturing environments found in this country. Based on observations from managers visiting Japan, the project was enlarged to also assess which factors in a production environment have the biggest impact on performance—regardless of the system in use. Guided by a panel of production and inventory managers from diverse plant environments, a comprehensive list …

Industry Self-Regulation: An Economic, Organizational, And Political Analysis, A. Gupta, Lawrence Lad Dec 1982

Industry Self-Regulation: An Economic, Organizational, And Political Analysis, A. Gupta, Lawrence Lad

Lawrence J. Lad

Researchers generally have viewed nonmarket regulation of firm behavior as synonymous with direct regulation by the government. This paper highlights industry self-regulation as an alternative form of nonmarket regulation that, depending on the context, may supplement or complement direct regulation by the government. Further, on the basis of exploratory economic, organizational, and political analysis, it advances, for possible future research, propositions relating to the existence, operation, and out-come of industry self-regulation.
