WWU Honors College Senior Projects
This paper is the accumulation of the research and executed facilitation of applied theatre methods with a group of university students. The applied theatre methods of Theatre of the Oppressed and Theatre for Living were used to confront community issues with a group of Western students. Using the definition of white supremacy and white supremacy culture from Laya Saad and Tema Okun, the group explored their individual relationship to these issues through theatre and pushed deeper to understand how it manifested in the community. The experiences of the workshop facilitator and the participants are explored to understand the transformation the …

Playing-Related Medical Injuries And Health Conditions In Collegiate Saxophonists: A Survey Of Saxophonists In North American Universities, Michael Anne Tolan
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports
When compared to other areas of musical performance, medical research on the performing arts is limited when it comes to studies on woodwind players, particularly saxophonists. The gap in research may be attributed to the circumstances surrounding selection processes and identifying subjects for study. For example, saxophonists are not salaried professionals in orchestras, which are commonly pooled for medical research. Establishing contact with saxophonists to conduct studies can prove difficult due to the wide range of genres that utilize the saxophone. Some issues may also be attributed to research methodology. To find the onset of injuries, researchers in previous studies …

The Lived Experiences Of Black Women In Ces Doctoral Programs During The Covid-19 Pandemic, Cynthia D. Williams
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Black women in counselor education and supervision (CES) programs have historically been underrepresented in the scholarly literature, making it vital to understand how this group of women cope with the adverse effects of the COVID-19 pandemic. The purpose of this qualitative transcendental phenomenological study was to explore and understand Black women’s lived experiences in CES doctoral programs during the COVID-19 pandemic. Husserl’s phenomenological approach served as the conceptual framework for this research study. Semi structured interviews were conducted with nine Black women enrolled in CES doctoral programs having at least 6 months to 5 years of engagement in their program. …

The Book I Never Got To Read: A Tale Of Book Censorship, Courtney Everett
Emerging Writers
From the expression of authors to sharing perceptions of the world, the use of literature has been one of the most common ways of teaching students for generations. However, with opposing viewpoints and conflicting ideas, literary censorship has continued to become an issue among communities for longer than people realize, and it brings harm to humanity over time. This essay discusses the recent conflict of banning books in communities and its affect on students.

“They Were Planning On It”: Recasting The 1967 Buffalo Uprising As A Student-Driven Insurgency, Matthew P. Gawley
Honors Theses
The past two decades have witnessed a critical re-analysis of the many African American urban “ghetto revolts” of the 1960s and 1970s. This paper analyzes one of the one hundred fifty-seven violent incidents of the “Long Hot Summer” of 1967, the Buffalo Uprising (June 26 – July 1, 1967). Building from recent research which indicates this incident had deeply political overtones, this work demonstrates the student-driven nature of the five-day rebellion, and the internal collaboration participants engaged in during their violent and non-violent activities. Drawing upon personally conducted interviews, interviews from 1967, newspaper testimony, and various publications, this new understanding …

Silence In The Kitchen: How Students Innovated And Created Despite Covid-19., Anna Cruickshank, Pauline Danaher
European Journal of Food Drink and Society
The COVID-19 lockdown has changed the educational landscape forever; everything that we thought we could not do online, it turned out we could. When the Irish Government announced that all third-level educational institutes were to close in March 2020 and that lecturers would move theory-based lectures online, it seemed a daunting challenge. Most lecturing staff had little experience of lecturing with online platforms and no time to prepare the students for new ways of working and attending class. Little did we know that twelve months later, as the crisis raged on, that an even bigger decision had to be grappled …
What Are Intended As Systems Of Support Become Systems Of Struggle, Kevin Timpe
What Are Intended As Systems Of Support Become Systems Of Struggle, Kevin Timpe
Ought: The Journal of Autistic Culture
Education is, in theory, a human right owed to all individuals, including those who are disabled. In practice, however, that right is often not satisfied. While disabled students now have a federal right to a public education in the United States, the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act is often not followed. And even when it is, ensuring that it is often places undue demands on disabled students and their families. The system that is supposed to support disabled students all too often is itself a source of struggle.
Developing An Intentional Disciple Making Strategy For Fathers To Lead Their Families In Spiritual Transformation, Michael Cauthorne
Developing An Intentional Disciple Making Strategy For Fathers To Lead Their Families In Spiritual Transformation, Michael Cauthorne
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
Do current student ministries produce disciples that can stand the test of the current culture? Has creating a separate ministry worked against God’s plan for making disciples? Statistics from across the Church would suggest the American Church is in decline. Within the Southern Baptist Convention there has been a continual decline in baptisms over the past few years. This project will seek to determine if there is a correlation between how student ministries are led in the modern church to how effectively the church has been in making disciples. With research and data collected from current and former student ministries, …
