On Angels’ Wings: Idolatry In Viktoria Tokareva’S “Five Figures On A Pedestal” And Lyudmila Ulitskaya’S “Angel”, Courtney E. Bentz

Undergraduate Theses, Professional Papers, and Capstone Artifacts

In his essays on Greek deities, Ralph Waldo Emerson declared: “Every man is a divinity in disguise, a god playing the fool.” While the idea of gods taking a corporeal form or angels walking among humans is a common literary trope, seldom do mortal characters find themselves compared to the divine without negative repercussions. Select post-Soviet women writers, however, flip this trope to explore the opposite. They instead embrace the human as holy, restrained by little consequence, as a means to highlight its destructive qualities in the context of an intimate relationship. These contemporary authors, Viktoria Tokareva and Lyudmila Ulitskaya, …

Constitutional Reflections Of The People: Representation In The Constitutions Of The United States (1789) And Chile (1833), Zoe E. Nelson

Undergraduate Theses, Professional Papers, and Capstone Artifacts

This paper is a comparative analysis of the American Constitution of 1789 and the Chilean Constitution of 1833, as well as the political writings of major political theorists prior to the making of each constitution. In comparing the historical development and making of Constitutions in post-war, newly independent American nations, this paper seeks to understand the similarities between American and Chilean Constitutional institutions and underlying political theory from a historical perspective. Bearing this purpose in mind, this paper asks, “In what ways were the Constitution making measures of Chile and the United States in 1833 and 1789, respectively, a reflection …

"This Is How We Play Destroy": Deconstruction And The Construction Of A Cyborg Future In Poppy's Am I A Girl?, Stevie Eve Sanchez

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Internet sensation and pop music star Poppy’s 2018 sophomore album Am I a Girl? stands out in an increasingly oversaturated pop landscape, thanks to evocative imagery, cleverly ambiguous lyrics, and daring genre crossovers that challenge conventions of contemporarypop music. Despite the album’s titular question, Poppy is not interested in being defined—instead, she seeks to transcend definition and exist in the space of questioning. On the album, Poppy explores concepts like gender, class, and consciousness in a way that pushes the boundaries of pop, deconstructing her genre, while also deconstructing the issues she sings about—and offering a vision for a future that …

#Dutertestandardtime: Mga Pamamahalang Pamanahon, Christian Jil R. Benitez

Filipino Faculty Publications

This study attempts a preliminary analysis on the present administration with a particular focus on the mechanics of time. From the understanding of “Filipino time” as a possible tactic for insisting power, the study turns to poems that directly associate the President Rodrigo Duterte to the concept of time, to reveal that despite his seeming ordinariness is his extraordinary capacity to “pull” “ordinary time” itself. This power becomes critical, especially in the present pandemic, when “time is of the essence.” However, as hinted from the meandering government reports and “poetic” attempts to criticize the administration, it can be perceived that …

Habermas And Argumentation In The Philippine Context, Maria Lovelyn Corpuz Paclibar Jan 2020

Habermas And Argumentation In The Philippine Context, Maria Lovelyn Corpuz Paclibar

Philosophy Department Faculty Publications

The article critically analyzes the perception on the incompatibility of the Filipino self-understanding as kapwa with Habermas's notion of argumentative discourse that champions autonomy and individuality. It argues that this apparent incompatibility is more due to the absence of an imagination of non-Western forms of rationalization processes and reflexivity, than to the commonly held claim of the incommensurability of lifeworlds. The key to this imagination is to locate potential rationalization processes from within modes of communication that reinforce kapwa solidarity. In the end, the article shows that kwentuhan, which is the mode of communication that is integrated with kapwa solidarity, …

Confucian Moral Education In The Ta Shueh And Analects, Ranier A. Ibana Jan 2020

Confucian Moral Education In The Ta Shueh And Analects, Ranier A. Ibana

Philosophy Department Faculty Publications

Confucian philosophy has always considered education as a mechanism to improve the quality of life in society. The Confucian classic, Ta Hsueh and the Analects emphasize this pivotal role of education. The ethics of education and life in the family also has a deep impact on government and business enterprises. Each one plays assigned roles and lives by the rules that govern his or her station in social life. The ninth chapter of the Ta Shueh teaches that "correct deportment" can rectify a whole country. Projecting the ethics of the family to the social order and extending the ethos of …

Mystical Yet Political: A Liberative Encounter With God Through Popular Piety, Wilson Angelo G. Espiritu Jan 2020

Mystical Yet Political: A Liberative Encounter With God Through Popular Piety, Wilson Angelo G. Espiritu

Theology Department Faculty Publications

Today, an increasing number of Catholics can be found in the countries of the Global South. This coincides with the pontificate of the first pope who comes from that region of the world where the prevalent expression of the Catholic faith is popular piety. Popular piety may be considered as an indispensable phenomenon in Global Catholicism. In his Apostolic Exhortation, Evangelii Gaudium, Pope Francis refers to popular piety as ‘the people’s mysticism’ and calls it a ‘locus theologicus’ which demands attention especially in the contemporary Church’s mission of evangelization. This paper examines popular piety as a probable point of encounter …

The Shape Of The Filipino Church To Come: A Vision Of Renewal In Filipino Sacramental Worship, Michael Demetrius H. Asis Jan 2020

The Shape Of The Filipino Church To Come: A Vision Of Renewal In Filipino Sacramental Worship, Michael Demetrius H. Asis

Theology Department Faculty Publications

What will it take to make sacramental worship finally inspire genuine Christian discipleship? This book offers a radical vision of renewing current Filipino sacramental understanding and practice. Grounded in a renewed vision of "church" consistent with Vatican II ecclesiology, this work examines the crucial link between worship and disciplehip, so that our prayer, whether private or public, truly becomes, now and in the future, the "source and summit" of all Christian life.

Salaysay, Saysay, Salukoy: Tungo Sa Dalumat Ng Alamat, Christian Jil R. Benitez Jan 2020

Salaysay, Saysay, Salukoy: Tungo Sa Dalumat Ng Alamat, Christian Jil R. Benitez

Filipino Faculty Publications

Lady Macbeth And Queen Gertrude, Missy V. Maramara Jan 2020

Lady Macbeth And Queen Gertrude, Missy V. Maramara

Fine Arts Department Faculty Publications

A collection of essays which were originally meant for Dulaang Sibol''s 50th anniversary... There is a lot in this collection about the Sibol classics -- Sa Kaharian ng Araw, Adarna, and of course, Sinta! -- and reading first-hand accounts of how some of these and other plays came to be written is a special treat. But Sibol has never been just about the stage performances or the songs, beautiful as they all are. Many of the writers here insist that in Sibol, unlike in Hamlet, the play''s not the thing, the person is.

[P]Lace: Reinterpreting The Feminine, Nicole D. James Jan 2020

[P]Lace: Reinterpreting The Feminine, Nicole D. James

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This body of work, [P]lace: Reinterpreting the Feminine, explores the ideas of gender and the the common associations materials, colors, values, etc. have in relationship to the accepted feminine and masculine. Armed with knowledge of these assumptions, my lace sculpture and installation work aims to draw attention to the complications surrounding what we understand as feminine through material transformation. By changing select qualities of the material, I create analogies for assumptions commonly made about women. My ultimate goal is not only material manipulation, but to question some of the fundamental elements we associate with gender itself. I …

A Study On The Visual And Verbal Languages Of Typography, Ellyn E. Duncan Jan 2020

A Study On The Visual And Verbal Languages Of Typography, Ellyn E. Duncan

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

It takes a person 0.05 seconds to form a first impression of something new. While first impressions are quick and surface level, they are generally important in the lasting impression developed by the individual. I believe graphic designers have the ability to manipulate the first impression of their work by using the different languages of typography to command the attention of an audience and direct a planned impression. Through the testing and research of this thesis study, I aim to provide examples of how people share common responses and interpretations of visual elements and show that the visual and verbal …

The Oberlin Near East Study Collection In Context, Julian Hirsch

Honors Papers

Housed in Oberlin College’s Religion department, the Oberlin Near East Study Collection encompasses a wide variety of archaeological material from the Southern Levant. Its roughly 650 artifacts encompass a vast time span from the Epipaleolithic to the Modern Period with most objects coming from the Iron Age. As a teaching collection, the objects were used to vivify Biblical texts for generations of students in Oberlin’s School of Theology and later in the College’s department of Religion. Starting in the 1980s, the collection began to receive only limited use with its contents being largely forgotten. This thesis utilizes the collection's artifacts, …

The Codification Of American Federalism: An Analysis Of Events Preceding The Ratification Of The United States Constitution, Timothy Spangler Jan 2020

The Codification Of American Federalism: An Analysis Of Events Preceding The Ratification Of The United States Constitution, Timothy Spangler

Capstone Showcase

The focus of my project is American Federalism, a cornerstone of American political thought for centuries. American Federalism is a political system where power is divided between federated states and a central government, and the federated states retain a large portion of their original independence and police powers. The question this project seeks to answer is: How and why did the idea of a federated system, where the states retain their own sphere of sovereignty, become codified in American political thought? Scholars have attempted to answer this question, but their arguments look at American Federalism in a vacuum and ignore …

We Live In A Society: Violence And Radicalization In The Internet Manosphere, Emily Price Jan 2020

We Live In A Society: Violence And Radicalization In The Internet Manosphere, Emily Price

Capstone Showcase

In a world of incels, pick-up artists, and other Men’s Rights Activists, friction between the so-called Manosphere and contemporary feminist thought has led to documented violence with regards to American mass shootings. Starting with the violent outbursts of disaffected young men, I will work backwards to the point of contact between the man and the Manosphere. This piece seeks not to draw a connection between radical MRAs and violence – the mass shooters draw that connection themselves in their manifestos by outlining their dissatisfaction with society as it is, and particularly with what they perceive as a politically correct and …
