Three Pillars Of A Sustainable Creative City In Asean:Examples From Thailand, Singapore & Indonesia, Grisana Punpeng

Journal of Urban Culture Research

This study attempts to critically examine practices towards building sustainable creative cities in ASEAN, particularly Singapore, Thailand, and Indonesia. The main aim is to identify key factors for sustainable creative cities by means of qualitative data analysis. The results show that to create a sustainable creative city in ASEAN government leaders must not focus on the designation of UNESCO Creative City as a goal for the economy, but as a firm commitment towards sustainable develop-ment. Creativity should be reinforced through art education from an early age. The distinction as well as the relationship between the terms "culture" and "creativ-ity" must …

Schumann's Last Piano Work: Geistervariationen, Eri Nakagawa Jul 2020

Schumann's Last Piano Work: Geistervariationen, Eri Nakagawa

Journal of Urban Culture Research

Robert Schumann was one of the greatest composers of the nineteenth century. Schumann suffered from a long-term mental disorder dating back to 1833 and his health deteriorated in February 1854. His Theme and Variations, WoO 24, a set of five variations known as Geistervariationen (Ghost Variations), was his last piano work, written between February 10 and 28, 1854, in the midst of his final mental break-down, which resulted in a suicide attempt. The complete Theme and Variations were not published until 1939 as his wife Clara Schumann (who was also one of the most recognized musicians of the day) jealously …

The Feldman system of criti-cism guided the scholarly analysis of five selected paintings of Asamoah to unearth their contemporary significance. Personal interviews with Asamoah, as well as the intelligent comparison of his works with his contemporaries and other published scholarly literature, pivoted the intellectual discussions of his skillfully executed paintings. The discussions revealed that Asamoah's …

'So Hydous Was The Noyse': Forgetting The 1381 Rebellion In Geoffrey Chaucer's The Nun's Priest's Tale, Rawitawan Sophonpanich

Journal of Letters

Since the medieval period, memory has been considered a site of identity formation and an important cultural force. Forgetting, on the other hand, has been dismissed because it seems impossible to study or recover what has already been forgotten. This study argues to the contrary. I focus on forgetting as a significant cultural practice, allowing the ruling classes and social institutions to perpetuate ideologies and manipulate how history is represented. In so arguing, I choose one of the most renowned events in medieval England as the subject of my study, which is the Peasants' Revolt of 1381. This Rebellion has …

Secularity, Emotion And Law In Ian Mcewan's The Children Act, Bancha Rattanamathuwong Jan 2020

Secularity, Emotion And Law In Ian Mcewan's The Children Act, Bancha Rattanamathuwong

Manusya, Journal of Humanities

This paper examines Ian McEwan's The Children Act as a work of fiction that explores the contemporary issue of secularism. My argument is that the novel's exploration of the interplay between law and feelings demonstrates McEwan's attempt to defy the dichotomous quality commonly attributed to law. By juxtaposing the implementation of law and religious practices, the novel's dramatization of the collision between these two forces shows that emotion and feeling are never absent from the allegedly unsym-pathetic secular civic institution. The realm of law can offer both sympathy and com-passion to people who are subject to it.(ความเป็นฆราวาส อารมณ์ และกฎหมายในนวนิยายเรื่อง The …

Traditional Intricate Paper Cutting Techniques Of Southern Thailand: Background, Beliefs, And Cultural Animation Of Thai Buddhist Culture, Pannee Virunanont

Manusya, Journal of Humanities

Intricate paper cutting of Southern Thailand is a traditional folk art, which is passed down from one generation to another. However, there are no detailed studies or re-cords of the historical backgrounds, beliefs, and cultural animation of Thai-Buddhist culture in Southern Thailand concerning this folk art. Transgender People's Deterritorialization In Arundhati Roy's The Ministry Of Utmost Happiness And Trace Peterson's "After Before And After", Tanrada Lertlaksanaporn

Manusya, Journal of Humanities

Arundhati Roy's The Ministry of Utmost Happiness and Trace Peterson's "After Before and After" have been studied in several aspects related to transgender issues. The pre-sentation of transgender people, especially the transgender protagonist in The Ministry of Utmost Happiness, has been criticized as a formulaic depiction with little portrayal of their struggles and triumphs. At the same time, the transgender protagonist is viewed positively as an integral force in the novel. The poem "After Before and After" has been praised for its creative portrayal of transgender people. A study of transgen-der issues in relation to desire and connection helps to …

A Dominant Global Translation Strategy In Thai Translated Novels: The Translations Of Religious Markers In Dan Brown's Thriller Novels, Wiriya Inphen

Manusya, Journal of Humanities

When translation is considered as an integral part of larger social systems (Even-Zohar 1990), the ways in which translations are produced to serve readers' specificity could be affected. This paper examines whether there is a preference for a specific global trans-lation strategy due to a readership that is specialized in terms of education level. Adopting Venuti's (1995/2008) division of global translation strategies into exoticizing and domesticating translation, it examines the frequency of local translation strate-gies, which are part of a global translation strategy, used in translating English-Thai religious markers in Dan Brown's Angels and Demons, The Da Vinci Code, The …

Manusya, Journal of Humanities

The aim of this study is to investigate the influence of grammatical gender on Russian speakers' cognition, compared with Thai speakers' cognition by means of object categorization. The key materials in the experiment are black-and-white pictures represented by nouns that are selected based on gender and appearance similarity. The hypothesis is that Russian speakers group two pictures that belong to the same grammatical gender class together, while Thai speakers generally rely on the size or shape of objects in the pictures. The result of the experiment statistically showed that Russian speakers categorized things on the basis of grammatical gender, while …

Invented Identity Of Thai Monks In Indonesia, Jesada Buaban Jan 2020

Invented Identity Of Thai Monks In Indonesia, Jesada Buaban

Manusya, Journal of Humanities

Thai missionary monks are viewed as passive in the new land on the grounds that though they work abroad, they still serve Thai communities rather than adapt Bud-dhism to attract the locals. Missionary work in Indonesia is, however, exceptional. This article questions how Thai monks attracted Chinese followers, who have a different background of beliefs. Ethnographic methodology was conducted in Central Java and Sumatra for three months. It found that in order to negotiate with educated lay reli-gious leaders, Thai monks choose to invent an identity of traditional forest monks who are experts in meditation as found in Northeast Thailand. …

The Impact Of Communication Technology And Social Media On Intergenerational Relationships Between Older Individuals And Their Adult Children In Bangkok, Marie-Helene Thomas

Manusya, Journal of Humanities

Modernisation theory (Cowgill and Holmes 1972) argues that older people in modern societies are less respected and valued as a result of technological innovations. To un-derstand the impact of communication technology and social media on Thai society, this research studies the transformations in communication, interaction and overall connectedness between older people and their adult children. In addition, it examines what elements have shifted due to the introduction and use of the smart phone and its accompanying instant messaging and social media applications such as Line and Face-book. Central Thai Food Culture And Acculturation During World War Ii And The Vietnam War, Ratiwan Watanasin

Manusya, Journal of Humanities

As food has a substantial cultural and economic value, globalization and the Internet have posed challenges to traditional culture. As previous research on Thai food has focused on recipes and the consumption behavior of the royal family and upper-class Thai citizens, this study therefore aims to investigate the Thai food culture of ordinary Thais before the proliferation of a foreign food culture. Senior citizens from diverse socio-economic backgrounds in central Thailand who witnessed two major cultural encounters, specifically World War ii and the Vietnam War, were interviewed until full data was obtained. Content analysis within the guidelines of consumer behavior …

We also study the layout of the urban en-ceinte, the constructive material, the gateways as well as weakness and strengths of the stronghold and the symbolic, monumental and ornamental functions in the overall role of the walls. Based on comparisons with similar cases, as well as in situ observa-tions of the archaeological remains and a bibliographical research, …

Friedrich Halm's Earliest Extant, Melodramatic Novelle, St. Sylvesterabend: An Austrian Dramatist's Hidden Beginnings As A Narrative Fiction Writer, Tony Page

Manusya, Journal of Humanities

To date there has been no scholarly exploration of the genesis and nature of Friedrich Halm's earliest extant Novelle, St. Sylvesterabend (New Year's Eve). The present research article attempts to fill that gap by determining the contested date of the story's origin, establishing it as 1823. Furthermore, the article examines the tale's simplicity of style, which is distinct from Halm's later Kleist-influenced narratives. Furthermore, it ana-lyzes the novel's structural principle of parallels and contrasts, and its themes of monomania, secularised religiosity, and Christian caritas. The article also indicates how vicious criticism of the tale by Halm's literary mentor, Michael Enk …

Covid-19 - You Can't Stop The Beat!, Alongkorn Parivudhiphongs

Journal of Urban Culture Research

The COVID-19 pandemic has given rise a myriad of artistic expressions on the in-ternet and social media platforms. What explains this turn to music and the per-forming arts during the crisis? At least four reasons matter. Popular music, in par-ticular, has proved useful in communicating key messages about COVID-19 and how to combat it to a broad audience. Music and other forms of artistic expression can help to create a sense of community and belonging at a time of uncertainty. They are powerful ways in which to express appreciation and gratitude. And they provide levity at a time of anxiety
