The Role Of Principles And Personal Relationships In Greek Tragedy And Epic, Ellen Pariser
Honors Program Theses and Projects
Understanding motivations are vital for understanding any characters, especially ones so far removed from contemporary society. Through this paper I will attempt to explore the tug between principles and close personal relationships that is often central to ancient texts and manifests so prevalently in the genres of tragedy and epic.

The ‘Real’ Outcomes Of Language Learning: The History Of English Language Education In China, Olivia (Jia Ming) Feng
The ‘Real’ Outcomes Of Language Learning: The History Of English Language Education In China, Olivia (Jia Ming) Feng
Bridges: An Undergraduate Journal of Contemporary Connections
This paper examines the history of English Language Education (ELE) and its societal role in China from 1900 to 1990. Throughout different periods in China's modern history, ELE was associated with key issues, including the revitalization of the declining Qing dynasty, modernization during the Republican era, and Cold War competitions during the Mao era. To investigate the connections between ELE and the political trends and movements in modern China, my research examines textbooks written and used in 1913, 1976, and 1979 China. These texts were implemented under different regimes, showing that the historical and political trends shaped the development of …
A Lyrical Comparison Of Suzanne And Its Translation, Natalie Sadler
A Lyrical Comparison Of Suzanne And Its Translation, Natalie Sadler
The Corinthian
This paper compares Leonard Cohen’s song Suzanne and its French translation by Graeme Allwright. It takes translation principles into account, by relying on translator Antoine Berman’s “Twelve Deforming Tendencies of Translation.” In his reliance on the instrumental model, which tries to find equivalence and treat the translation as a reproduction of the original, Allwright’s translation misinterprets several important elements in the original, namely the relationship between the speaker and the Suzanne character. In Cohen’s original, the character Suzanne is expected to follow the speaker and is changed by his “superior” intellect, while in Allwright’s version Suzanne is likened to a …

The Coca-Cola Foundation's Funds, Katherine Frey
The Coca-Cola Foundation's Funds, Katherine Frey
Fall Showcase for Research and Creative Inquiry
The Coca-Cola Company is widely known to spend billions of dollars on advertising. Many of these advertising campaigns center around the company's philanthropic efforts. In 2017, the Coca-Cola Foundation has helped to donate over $138 million to different organizations in order to give back to the community. I used data from this past completed year (2019) to see how much the Coca-Cola Foundation is contributing to specific causes. Using Coca Cola bottle caps, I will show the amount of money being donated to each area. Some of these areas include women's empowerment, the environment, and education, which are the main …
Pharmaceutical Misconceptions And Rising Costs In The United States, Karlie Walter
Pharmaceutical Misconceptions And Rising Costs In The United States, Karlie Walter
Fall Showcase for Research and Creative Inquiry
Misconceptions are common in the healthcare field and the presence of misconceptions about pharmaceutical costs are not lost among them. Pharmaceutical costs can range annually and often fluctuate for the average household. Cost of pharmaceuticals can depend on insurance, availability of the drug, supply and demand, the company that owns the drug along with many other factors. The research will focus on clearly defining the misperceptions about pharmaceutical prices and ways to eliminate massive upselling on drugs. The purpose is to determine ways to make drugs more affordable while ensuring access to everyone who needs them. The impact will most …

Comparative Analysis: Animal Research Versus Animal Testing, Hannah Vanhoose
Comparative Analysis: Animal Research Versus Animal Testing, Hannah Vanhoose
Fall Showcase for Research and Creative Inquiry
Currently, there is a push to eliminate the use of animals in all experimental settings. Animal rights organizations like PETA and the Animal Welfare Institute consistently advocate for the well-being of animals in many aspects, including in the laboratory setting. While it is necessary to eradicate the maltreatment of animals found in unregulated testing centers, it is important to distinguish the differences between testing and research involving animals. The focus of this research is to demonstrate that while it is essential to cut down on harmful testing, the use of animals in medical research is crucial.

The Effect Mental Health Portrayals In Television Shows Have On Viewers, Cade Kinzel
The Effect Mental Health Portrayals In Television Shows Have On Viewers, Cade Kinzel
Fall Showcase for Research and Creative Inquiry
The goal of this study was to research the connections between portrayals in television shows and real-life people with mental health conditions. In addition, another purpose was to conclude whether my initial thoughts, which include believing a minimal numbers of TV shows contain any positive effect on viewer mental health, were supported. Misperceptions about mental health, including a justified feeling to hide mental conditions, judge others for theirs, or use it as a way for humor, are often given in television shows when mental health is included in the story (Smith, et al. 2019). I created a blog that revolved …

Exploring The Truths And Fabrications Of Sir John Mandeville, Jake Sanborn
Exploring The Truths And Fabrications Of Sir John Mandeville, Jake Sanborn
Undergraduate Honors Theses
The Travels of Sir John Mandeville presents a unique and nuanced perspective of the Eastern World during the time of the Crusades. By critically analyzing the still-unknown author’s depictions of the Eastern lands and their peoples, I demonstrate that it is possible to gain a deeper understanding of the status of Christianity during the late 14th century. The Travels comments upon the concepts of Eastern religions and cultural practices in a way that is remarkable and surprising — instead of reacting to such topics with hostility or aggression, the likely-Christian author of The Travels is willing to learn from those …
African American Vernacular English: A Language Necessarily Adorned, Christelle Lauture
African American Vernacular English: A Language Necessarily Adorned, Christelle Lauture
Honors Program Theses and Projects
African American Vernacular English (AAVE) has been spoken by African Americans for centuries but has only recently been acknowledged as a distinct dialect. It is often used in tandem with Standard English, through a concept referred to as code-switching. Although linguists have done substantial work to validate AAVE, there is an incomplete understanding of why the dialect developed, and, in particular, what functions the dialect serves for its speakers. In order to begin the work of discovering why AAVE developed the specific features it manifests, I synthesized other linguists’ observations into a taxonomy of five categories that account for most …
Amatonormativity, Aromanticism, And What Defines A Relationship, Rilee Granger
Amatonormativity, Aromanticism, And What Defines A Relationship, Rilee Granger
Honors Program Theses and Projects
Romance is seen in many aspects of western culture, from movies and tv, to songs and language, but beliefs about romance go beyond what is portrayed in the media. Portrayals of romance with the marriage plot in movies show the underlying belief that romance is a goal everyone is striving towards. This belief that all people are striving towards an exclusive, romantic coupling is called amatonormativity. Professor Elizabeth Brake coined the term amatonormativity and defines it as “the assumption that a central, exclusive, amorous relationship is normal for humans, in that it is a universally shared goal, and that such …
“Pen Is Envy”: Education, Feminine Sexuality, And Fruitfulness In Christina Rossetti’S “Goblin Market” And “An Apple Gathering” And Margaret Atwood’S The Handmaid’S Tale And The Testaments, Hannah White
Honors Program Theses and Projects
The Victorian era was a time in which people were very much interested in morality and sinning, especially when it came to women’s sexuality. It was also time in which conversations about women and education often linked women to their bodies—even medical doctors during this era spoke of the dangerous consequences education might have on a woman’s reproductive capabilities. While men’s sexual transgressions were often viewed as a natural result of their being in the public sphere, women were expected to be the pure and domestic moral compass there to guide men that could not help but sin because of …
Salt In The Deep Marine, Rachel Bollinger
Salt In The Deep Marine, Rachel Bollinger
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
ABSTRACT
Rachel Allison Bollinger: Salt in the Deep Marine
(Under the direction of Dr. Christine Butterworth-McDermott and Dr. John McDermott)
The surface tension present between liquid and air is due to the fact that liquid molecules are highly attractive to one another. Because of this, the surface of water acts like an elastic membrane, allowing human hands or light insects to sit or slide on its surface. For a moment or two, the hand or the insect seems to occupy both the water and the air simultaneously. This commonplace phenomenon is explored in the poetry collection, Salt in the Deep …

Beat The Church Crowd, Evelyn Alston Tyer
Beat The Church Crowd, Evelyn Alston Tyer
Honors Theses
Beat the Church Crowd is a collection of poems that explores a variety of topics and themes, from personal family legacy and natural disasters to bestiary, ekphrastic, and southern locale poems. It is divided into four sections: “Blue Danube,” “Anecdotes,” “Urban Legends,” and “Something Worth Protecting.” While the subject matter and forms of the poems vary, the common thread weaving each poem to the next is the slight touch of the macabre.
