Autobiographies By Americans Of Color 1980-1994: An Annotated Bibliography, Rebecca Stuhr Dec 1996

Autobiographies By Americans Of Color 1980-1994: An Annotated Bibliography, Rebecca Stuhr

Rebecca A Stuhr

This book compiles and provides a brief summary of autobiographies published or reissued during the last decades of the 20th century. This is an excellent source for finding personal accounts of growing up just after the end of slavery through the civil rights movement, experiences for Japanese Americans during World War II, the American Indian Movement, and the growing movement for rights for immigrant labor in the United States. Many of these autobiographies were written to provide an account of family history, hardship endured, and accomplishments achieved for the next generation.

Responsible Engineering: Gilbane Gold Revisited, Michael Pritchard Dec 1996

Responsible Engineering: Gilbane Gold Revisited, Michael Pritchard

Michael Pritchard

This paper addresses several concerns in teaching engineering ethics. First, there is the problem of finding space within already crowded engineering curricula for meaningful discussions of ethical dimensions in engineering. Some engineering programs may offer entire courses on engineering ethics; however, most do not at present and may not in the foreseeable future. A promising possibility is to weave ethics into already existing courses using case studies, but most current case studies are not well integrated with engineering technical analysis. There is a danger that case studies will be viewed by both instructors and students as departures from “business as …

Law Review Story, Lisa Pruitt

Lisa R Pruitt

This essay is the story of the author’s election as editor-in-chief of the Arkansas Law Review and of her tenure in that role. The story implicates a range of legal issues including hate speech, sexual harassment, sex discrimination, defamation, and intentional infliction of emotional distress. It is also the tale of the author’s feminist epiphany and of the law school’s failure to respond to the harassment. It was published in the 50th anniversary issue of the Arkansas Law Review.

On The Value Of Natural Relations, Damian Cox Dec 1996

On The Value Of Natural Relations, Damian Cox

Damian Cox

In "A Refutation of Environmental Ethics" Janna Thompson argues that by assigning intrinsic value to nonhuman elements of nature either our evaluations become (1) arbitrary, and therefore unjustified, or (2) impractical, or (3) justified and practical, but only by reflecting human interest, thus failing to be truly intrinsic to nonhuman nature. There are a number of possible responses to her argument, some of which have been made explicitly in reply to Thompson and others which are implicit in the literature. In this discussion I describe still another response, one which takes Thompson's concerns about value seriously, but does not assign …
