Spiritual Nourishment: A Central Christian Metaphor, Susan Sleeth Mosedale Dec 1997

Spiritual Nourishment: A Central Christian Metaphor, Susan Sleeth Mosedale

Dissertations and Theses

Since its origins, Christianity has been pervaded by a large array of images in which the spiritual realities are symbolized as food. Such images may be not only verbal, but visual or expressed in actions. These images can be seen as expressions of a spiritual nourishment metaphor; I apply here the meaning of "metaphor" proposed by the linguist George Lakoff and the philosopher Mark Johnson: a metaphor is a concept that structures ideas and actions as well as language. This thesis establishes the spiritual nourishment metaphor as a philosophical concept and begins to explore its history within Christianity.

The spiritual …

Vormärz Of Germany And The Critique Of Heinrich Heine, Andrew Dean Henley Dec 1997

Vormärz Of Germany And The Critique Of Heinrich Heine, Andrew Dean Henley

Dissertations and Theses

The conclusion of the French Revolution and the Napoleonic Wars marked the beginning of the modem world. In western Europe new ideals about the position of the individual and the future of society flourished in the early nineteenth century--prior to the revolutions of 1848. However, the forward move into the modem world was stymied in the multitude of states which composed Germany after 1815. Due to a combination of factors- political repression, conservative/romantic trends, social lethargy, and liberal immaturity--German society in the period 1815-1848--the Vormärz (pre-March 1848) clung to traditional ways. The most famous German writer of this period, Heinrich …

The Reemergence Of Kantian Ethics: Have We Adequately Responded To Hegel's Objections?, Gwen C. Thompson Nov 1997

The Reemergence Of Kantian Ethics: Have We Adequately Responded To Hegel's Objections?, Gwen C. Thompson

Dissertations and Theses

The philosophies of Kant and Hegel have experienced a renaissance for the past thirty years, and a debate continues as to whether Hegel's objections to Kant's moral philosophy are sound, and/or whether Hegel's ethics are an improvement on Kant's. This debate takes many forms, and most recently, theorists have been interested in measuring Hegel's objections against contemporary theories following in the Kantian tradition. 'Critics,' (theorists defending Hegel's moral point of view) suggests such reconstructed theories leave themselves open to identical criticisms Hegel wielded at Kant almost 200 years ago. 'Defenders,' (theorists supporting Kant's moral philosophy, or a revised version) reply …

The Influence Of Cathar Philosophy, Thought And Everyday Life On The Works Of Selected Troubadour Poets, Marilyn Ann Lucas Nov 1997

The Influence Of Cathar Philosophy, Thought And Everyday Life On The Works Of Selected Troubadour Poets, Marilyn Ann Lucas

Dissertations and Theses

This thesis presents an examination of the influence of Cathar philosophy, doctrine, and life style on selected works of troubadour poets. Whether Cathar ideology is revealed clearly, secretly, allegorically, symbolically, or not at all in the poetry of the troubadours, has been discussed and debated from a variety of angles by various scholars. There appears to be no completely convincing evidence either way. Some authors argue that the language of the troubadours was in fact the secret language of the Cathars. Others contend that the troubadours and the Cathars had very little to do with each other. Denis de Rougemont …

Teaching Culture In German: Standards, Perspectives, Resources, Alexander Lukanich Nov 1997

Teaching Culture In German: Standards, Perspectives, Resources, Alexander Lukanich

Dissertations and Theses

Americans face a serious challenge today: the need to become more competent in the languages and cultures of the rest of the world. Technology has brought nations closer together. International trade has grown to the creation of a global economy. Americans have greater contact with the cultures of other nations and encounter growing diversity within their own borders. In spite of these demands, Americans remain largely unable to speak other languages, or understand other cultures. Cultural instruction must play an increasingly important role in education. Foreign language teachers must teach culture as a regular and prominent part of their foreign …

"Qui Vauroit Bon Vers Oïr": Voice, Text, And Social Insight In Aucassin Et Nicolette, Lonnie Tristan Renteria Nov 1997

"Qui Vauroit Bon Vers Oïr": Voice, Text, And Social Insight In Aucassin Et Nicolette, Lonnie Tristan Renteria

Dissertations and Theses

Aucassin et Nicolette has stimulated much dialogue among scholars. Literary genres clearly express perceptions that are representative of an historical period and culture, and Aucassin et Nicolette's tendency to synthesize literary genres, namely poetry and prose, raises many points relative to the social sphere in which it came into existence. To best illuminate these characteristics in Aucassin et Nicolette, an eclectic approach to the text is in order.

The first chapter explores the manner in which the story is told, focusing on the voice as it is the artist's tool to transmit emphatic information. The poet is performer, …

Ornamental Nationalism: Indigenous Images In Porfirian Mexico, 1876-1911, Seonaid Valiant Nov 1997

Ornamental Nationalism: Indigenous Images In Porfirian Mexico, 1876-1911, Seonaid Valiant

Dissertations and Theses

When General Porfirio Dfaz became president of Mexico the country was unstable. During his years of leadership, 1876-1911 he managed an uneven stability. One method he used to promote nationalism was the use of symbols. This thesis derives from the theory introduced by the historian of Mexican economy, Barbara Tenenbaum, that the Porfirian administrators attempted to establish themselves as the legitimate rulers of the Mexican nation by forging a line of succession from the ancient Aztecs to themselves through association with indigenous symbols and territory. The intention of this thesis is to demonstrate that the Mexican government manipulated images of …

Dissertations and Theses

This thesis examines the content and reception of Ibsen's Peer Gynt. Chapter I begins with a summary of Ibsen's life and influences, placing Ibsen and his plays into a historical context. Lewis And Clark At Fort Clatsop: A Winter Of Environmental Discomfort And Cultural Misunderstandings, Kirk Alan Garrison Jul 1997

Lewis And Clark At Fort Clatsop: A Winter Of Environmental Discomfort And Cultural Misunderstandings, Kirk Alan Garrison

Dissertations and Theses

Members of the Lewis and Clark expedition did not like the 1805-1806 winter they spent at Fort Clatsop near the mouth of the Columbia River among the Lower Chinookan Indians, for two reasons. First, the environment west of the Rocky Mountains was unlike anything they had ever experienced or imagined, and it had such a powerful effect on the whites as to negatively influence their attitudes regarding the western landscape, and to prejudice the explorers against the peoples living in that environment.

Second, the cultures of the Lower Chinook Indians and the whites were so different that often neither group …

Hiroshima Mon Amour And L'Annee Derniere A Marienbad: Meaning Conveyed Through Cinematic Organization, Ellen Leigh Agee Jul 1997

Hiroshima Mon Amour And L'Annee Derniere A Marienbad: Meaning Conveyed Through Cinematic Organization, Ellen Leigh Agee

Dissertations and Theses

This thesis examines how the cinematic organization of film is used to convey meaning. Hiroshima mon amour (1959) and L'Annee derniere a Marienbad (1961) I two films directed by Alain Resnais, are used as models for this purpose. This thesis argues for a new type of film criticism, one that recognizes the uniqueness of film by adding technical analysis to the literary methods that currently dominate. Traditionally, film criticism has followed two directions: firstly that of the "film reviewer" whose efforts bow to the economic needs of the industry, and secondly the academic or scholarly approach which is based in …

Wedding Bands And Marriage Bans: A History Of Oregon's Racial Intermarriage Statutes And The Impact On Indian Interracial Nuptials, Matthew Aeldun Charles Smith Jul 1997

Wedding Bands And Marriage Bans: A History Of Oregon's Racial Intermarriage Statutes And The Impact On Indian Interracial Nuptials, Matthew Aeldun Charles Smith

Dissertations and Theses

Beginning in the late eighteenth century, the first contacts between white and Indian cultures in Oregon quickly secured marriages between the European and American traders and trappers and indigenous women. These unions sustained economic alliances and nurtured cultural links.

But the opening of the Oregon Trail brought an influx of white men and women from America's Middle West who stored more than supplies in their wagons. They transported racial beliefs which subjugated all non-whites to an inferior status. Laws were passed by this generation of pioneers in each governmental period -- provisional, territorial and statehood -- which codified a wide …

Preternatural Rhythm: A Vernacular Application Of The Systemic Grid With Respect To The Influence Of Organic Processes, Mark Richardson Smith Jun 1997

Preternatural Rhythm: A Vernacular Application Of The Systemic Grid With Respect To The Influence Of Organic Processes, Mark Richardson Smith

Dissertations and Theses

The practice of Systemic Art was first introduced under the pretext of Minimal/Conceptual art processes in the 1960s, which incorporated the presentation of empty gridded armatures and self-referential charts, (termed non-relational arrangement) as a means of democratizing esthetic content. Systemic objects stressed industrial fabrication and materials m their manufacture over traditional notions of individualized craft, with the intent to demystify the role of the artist in the creative process. For those reasons, systemic practice has remained highly influential among artists concerned with the public context of aesthetics, although its recent applications have gravitated towards incorporation of disparate materials and …

Pregnancy Outcomes: A Study Testing A Model For Predicting Health Outcomes In Pregnancy, Tamera Ann Hart-Johnson Jun 1997

Pregnancy Outcomes: A Study Testing A Model For Predicting Health Outcomes In Pregnancy, Tamera Ann Hart-Johnson

Dissertations and Theses

There is a persistent relationship between socioeconomic status and physical health outcomes found in the literature; however the variables mediating this relationship are many, and ways that they interact with each other are complex. The goal of understanding this relationship is to decrease the disparity in health by socioeconomic status.

This study tested a biopsychosocial model proposed by David Williams (1990) to explain the relationship between socioeconomic status and physical health outcomes. The model included the following latent factors: demographics, socioeconomic status, biomedical risk, medical care, psychosocial variables, and health outcomes. The model was tested through a secondary data analysis. …

The Language Of Transformation In A "Conversation For Possibility": A Metaphor Analysis, Deborah Jean Gabbert Jun 1997

The Language Of Transformation In A "Conversation For Possibility": A Metaphor Analysis, Deborah Jean Gabbert

Dissertations and Theses

Metaphor allows us to understand and experience "relatively abstract or unstructured subject matter in terms of more concrete, or at least m~re highly structured subject matter" (Lakotf, 1993, p. 245). Lakoff and Johnson's (1980) and Lakoffs (1993) contemporary theory of metaphor contends that: metaphor is fundamentally conceptual; metaphoric structuring is the basis for the organization and functioning of much of the ordinary human conceptual system; and metaphorical language found in everyday speech is a surface manifestation of underlying conceptual metaphors. The metaphors most salient in a culture's discourse will reveal something about what is thinkable, knowable, and doable in that …

Combining The Historical And The Personal In Painting, Christopher A. Shotola-Hardt May 1997

Combining The Historical And The Personal In Painting, Christopher A. Shotola-Hardt

Dissertations and Theses

This thesis project consists of five large scale, abstract paintings executed on Masonite panels. A major component of these paintings is the heavily built-up surface texture. In order to achieve this heavy, sculptural surface, plaster and acrylic media have been applied in an aggressive, spontaneous manner using variously-sized masonry knives. The paintings are largely action-oriented. They are non-neutral, and they bespeak a great deal of intensity on the part of the artist.

The five paintings contain emotional content based upon personal experiences and family history. In some cases, I began a painting with the subject matter clearly in mind. In …

This story of community empowerment is tied to long-standing conflicts and questions surrounding the nature of multicultural education, the role of public …

The Persistence Of Elites And The Legacy Of I.G. Farben, A.G., Robert Arthur Reinert May 1997

The Persistence Of Elites And The Legacy Of I.G. Farben, A.G., Robert Arthur Reinert

Dissertations and Theses

On a massive scale, German business elites linked their professional ambitions to the affairs of the Nazi State. By 1937, the chemical giant, l.G. Farben, became completely "Nazified" and provided Hitler with materials which were essential to conduct war. With its monopoly over the manufacture of critical wartime products and global business interests, LG. Farben became one of the most powerful companies in the world during World War II, and an integral part of the Third Reich power structure. The conglomerate also provoked hostile mergers within the conquered "territories" of the German Reich, and constructed one of the largest privately-owned …

The Redemptive Role Of Chivalry In Old French Arthurian Romance (12th And 13th Centuries), Nora Jane Peacock

Dissertations and Theses

Many medieval authors used religious imagery to influence their religiousminded audiences. Old French Arthurian romances are laden with religious images and allegoric undertones drawn from contemporary religious beliefs. The purpose of the present study is to examine the changes in redemptive imagery as represented through certain characters in the romances studied and to demonstrate how the religious views of the Middle Ages were assimilated into this body of Arthurian literature. Two main themes arise from this study: the dynamic quality of the religious images and the functions and purpose of redemption in regards to the final spiritual quest in the …

Images Of Women In Abdelhak Serhane's Le Soliel Des Obscurs, Wendy Grace Cook

Dissertations and Theses

Current trends in North African francophone literature include a movement towards the exploration of alienation and exile, most often in the form of novels written about Maghrebian immigrants in Europe. Yet this alienation exists within the North African context as well, and it is possible to feel alienated and exiled, as well as marginalized, within one's homeland. This question is explored by Moroccan francophone author Abdelhak Serhane in his novel, Le Soleil des obscurs, which is the focus of this study.

The purpose of the research is to examine the four principle female characters in the novel and relate …

The Emergence Of An Icon: The Frida Kahlo Cult, Teresa Neva Tate Apr 1997

The Emergence Of An Icon: The Frida Kahlo Cult, Teresa Neva Tate

Dissertations and Theses

At her death in 1954, Frida Kahlo was known as little more than the wife of muralist Diego Rivera. Since then her art and personae have taken on a cult-like following and she has become an icon of popular culture. Thus far Frida's repute has stretched across three decades, from the 1970s, 1980s, and into the 1990s. Frida's popularity is viewed as primarily emerging from the Women's Movement of the 1970s. However, interest from many other groups have carried her image into the 1980s and 1990s. Aside from the Women’s Movement, Frida's popularity reflects a growing interest in Mexico, specifically …

From The Printing Press To The Guillotine: Gracchus Babeuf And The Revolutionary Language Of Thermidor, David Brian Audley Mar 1997

From The Printing Press To The Guillotine: Gracchus Babeuf And The Revolutionary Language Of Thermidor, David Brian Audley

Dissertations and Theses

The traditional history of Franc̦ois-Noel 'Gracchus' Babeuf has been centered on politics and socialism. Since his death in 1 797 historians have attempted to show the foundations of nineteenth and twentieth-century social revolution and communism in the polemical works of Babeuf. One result of this method of research has been an assumption of contradiction within Babeuf's writings in the months immediately following the fall of Maxmilien Robespierre. Historians have assumed that the seemingly anti-Robespierrist rhetoric found from September 1794 to February 1795 was both a product and an evidence of the 'Thermidorization' of Babeuf. However, a close textual analysis of …

"Sin Decidirlo Me Volví Distinta": Gender, Deception And Development In Angeles Mastretta's ArráNcame La Vida, Luisa Samaniego

Dissertations and Theses

With this research I locate Angeles Mastretta's novel Arráncame la vida in the Bildungsroman genre, examine the particular forces influencing the protagonist's development and gain insight into her process of identity formation. This modern Bildungsroman portrays the fate of a woman in the male dominated world of post-revolutionary Mexico. I analyze how class, gender, historical moment, psychological and cultural influences are woven into the intriguing formation of the heroine, Catalina, variously constraining or propelling her forward in her quest for development.

I argue that the heroine transcends the limiting factors in her patriarchal environment, struggling against culturally sanctioned deception, confining …
