Book Puts Spotlight On Censorship, Choice And Teaching Of Controversial Popular Literature In The Classroom, Kay Hyatt
General University of Maine Publications
It's back. The debate, reflection and discussion surrounding the controversial issues of censorship, student choice and the place of popular literature in the classroom that highlighted last fall's Reading Stephen King Conference at the University of Maine are now available for reference and examination in a new book. The collection of essays from literary scholars, librarians, university faculty, and high school teachers and students, including a chapter by the best-selling author, is intended to help educators navigate the precarious line between community standards and who chooses what students read and teachers teach.
Changing Families, Different Views Can Test Holiday Traditions, Kay Hyatt
Changing Families, Different Views Can Test Holiday Traditions, Kay Hyatt
General University of Maine Publications
Who's on the guest list for the traditional family holiday dinner this year? Let's see. There's Grandpa and his bride, Aunt Lilly and her significant other, Cousin Ned and his stepchildren, plus all the other former and present husbands, wives and partners that comprise today's changing families. The different relationships and new people represented at family gatherings span generations and cause tension and uncertainty that call for extreme flexibility and generous accommodation, according to a University of Maine professor.

Feeling The Managed-Care Pinch, Paul Livingstone
Feeling The Managed-Care Pinch, Paul Livingstone
Social Justice: Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion
I never paid much attention to HMOs until I began hearing the occasional managed-care horror story (the one about bone-marrow transplant denials comes to mind) and realized I was one of those untold millions living under the auspices of a managed care company. A perennial favorite of the news media, managed care has received a healthy dose of concerned prodding over the last few years over its practices.

Policy May Jeopardize Safety, Kathryn Ritchie
Social Justice: Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion
An informed community is a safe community, according to Public Safety Police Lt. Alan Stormann, but recent actions suggest the campus police are only willing to go so far in keeping the community informed. In 1996, seven "forcible rapes" were reported in the university's annual safety and security information report. The definition of forcible rape includes forcible "fondling, non-forcible incest and statutory rape." Of the seven reported "forcible rapes," according to Lt. Stormann, three were actual rapes, one was an attempted rape, two involved offensive touching and the last one involved a man masturbating on a woman. Of the seven …
