Truth's Bright Embrace: Essays and Poems in Honor of Arthur O. Roberts
In Arthur Roberts' excellent volume reflecting on his life, Drawn By The Light, he briefly describes his involvement in state and local politics. He ran unsuccessfully for a position in the Oregon Legislature and later served a four-year term on the Yachats, Oregon, City Council. It was not easy for Arthur to bridge the gulf between the intellectual depth and erudite vocabulary of the scholar and the rough and tumble of state and local politics. But he felt that these political involvements had "quickened my appreciation for ordinary activity as the true vocation for the church." Arthur took his city …
A Basis For Civility, Phil D. Smith
A Basis For Civility, Phil D. Smith
Truth's Bright Embrace: Essays and Poems in Honor of Arthur O. Roberts
Give attention, if you will, to the virtue of civility. In this essay I want to define civility, then give a bit of its history, continue by predicting something of its future, and conclude by explaining civility's true ground, at least as I understand it.
We are not here interested in politeness or courtesy, though those meanings of "civility" may be ancillary to our topic. We are thinking instead about the political realm, and we are aware that many voices have been raised to decry the mean-spirited and vicious nature of politics, both in attaining and using public office. \Vise …

A Nomenclature Of Brazilian Spiritism And An Evaluation Of Christian Defenses, Donald Lloyd Watson
A Nomenclature Of Brazilian Spiritism And An Evaluation Of Christian Defenses, Donald Lloyd Watson
Western Evangelical Seminary Theses
Spiritism is one of the oldest cults in existence. Practically every major civilization has indulged in spiritistic practices. Through the centuries it waxed and waned in popularity, but still it managed to survive until this present day. Estimates of the number of practicing Spiritists are as high as half a million in the United States and more than three million in Brazil.l Good statistics are difficult to obtain because of the stigma attached to one who claims to be a Spiritist.
The ancient history of Spiritism is both interesting and informative. In the literature of the Egyptians, Babylonians, Chinese and …

The Origin And Development Of The Mar Thoma Church Of India, M. Matthews
The Origin And Development Of The Mar Thoma Church Of India, M. Matthews
Western Evangelical Seminary Theses
The purpose of this study was to make an intensive survey of the origin and develoment of the Mar Thoma Syrian Church of India. The name 'St. Thomas Christians' came to be known among the Church historians and among several Christian writers much earlier on account of the long standing tradition that St. Thomas, one of the twelve disciples of Christ, brought the Gospel to the South Western coast of India early in the second half of the first century and founded the first seven Churches in South India. The reliability of this tradition has been a matter of much …

History Of The Oregon Conference Of The Free Methodist Church, Howard Sanders
History Of The Oregon Conference Of The Free Methodist Church, Howard Sanders
Western Evangelical Seminary Theses
The religious history of the Pacific Northwest is important to the development and growth of this part of the United States. The first church men came with the purpose of evangelizing the Indians who lived in the region. These men, such as Jason Lee, Father Blanchet, Father Desmet, Marcus Whitman, and Dr. Elijah White, were the first to migrate to this country with the exception of a small handful who were fur traders or employees of the Hudson Bay Company. Although the primary purpose of these "missionaries" failed, they did pioneer the way for others to come. With each new …

Age-Group Doctrinal Training And The Assemblies Of God, Roy Lyn Schmidt
Age-Group Doctrinal Training And The Assemblies Of God, Roy Lyn Schmidt
Western Evangelical Seminary Theses
For years Protestantism has had many denominations, mainly because of variant doctrinal beliefs. Denominations who feel their existence is justified and who feel the truths for which they stand are worth perpetuating, have the solemn responsibility of indoctrinating their followers in the basic doctrines of the Bible as well as the distinctives for which they stand. When properly done, doctrinal trainings should assure a denomination of its continued existence, and the perpetuation of the truths for which it stands.
Accepted evangelical leaders indicated that doctrinal training was closely related to the destiny of a denomination, and most evangelical Protestant churches …

Ball in the form of eight articles for The Collegiate Contact, the monthly publication for college students in California Yearly Meeting of the Friends Church. At the time of publication, collegians received the articles with considerable appreciation for their relevance, lucidity and scholarly tone.
In response to many requests that the articles be made available for a wider circulation, the Board of Christian Education of California Yearly Meeting has authorized this reprinting. It is our hope that this material may be of great value as resource material for membership …
A Proposed Program Of Junior Church Camping With An Evangelistic Emphasis, Alfred Bohr
A Proposed Program Of Junior Church Camping With An Evangelistic Emphasis, Alfred Bohr
Western Evangelical Seminary Theses
As camping continues to grow as a vital part of the Christian Education program in the church, camp leaders are constantly seeking new and better tools to perform a more effective job. The church has been quite active in developing the program of camping for young people but has seemingly ignored the children. It wasn't until the 1930's that any rapid advances were made in junior camping. Consequently, any development in the camping movement for juniors has been carried on by secular agencies. These programs are very excellent, but they do not fully meet the need of the church camp, …
A Comparative Study Of The Wesleyan-Arminian And Calvinistic Doctrines Of The Perseverance Of The Saints As Set Forth By Selected Representatives, M. Edward Hegle
A Comparative Study Of The Wesleyan-Arminian And Calvinistic Doctrines Of The Perseverance Of The Saints As Set Forth By Selected Representatives, M. Edward Hegle
Western Evangelical Seminary Theses
The Christian doctrine of the perseverance of the saints is an important teaching in the field of Christian theology. Perseverance is persistence in a state of grace until it is succeeded by a state of glory. Bible believing Christians in the evangelical churches have not been in complete agreement in their views of this important Christian tenet.
As one who has anticipated serving in the pastorate of the Evangelical United Brethren Church the writer was aware of his need to be able to guide the people in his parish to an intelligent understanding of this tenet and lead them in …

The Sign Of Jonah, Kelsey E. Hinshaw
Historical Quaker Books
We have available today the immediate revelation and leadership of the Holy Spirit. It is this leadership rather than conscience that we as Friends are obligated to follow. Conscience may be a poor standard as it operates in accord with our own subjective beliefs and may be wrong. Our problem is to "try the spirits" to be sure the spirit we are following is truly the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit is of God and cannot be wrong. The Bible is our ultimate test because the leadership of the Holy Spirit must be in accord with God's Written Word. The …
Quaker Testimony Against Slavery And Racial Discrimination, Stella Alexander
Quaker Testimony Against Slavery And Racial Discrimination, Stella Alexander
Historical Quaker Books
This anthology has been compiled at the suggestion of the Race Relations Committee of the (British) Society of Friends, who wanted to record the development of Friends' testimony against slavery and racial discrimination. The extracts have been grouped under two headings "Individual Witness" and "Corporate Witness". An effort has been made under the second heading to trace the growth of the testimony, but in general the passages have been chosen for their intrinsic interest and to illustrate the depth and strength of the witness.

A Proposed Program Of Better Training For Wesleyan Teachers, Thomas G. Porter
A Proposed Program Of Better Training For Wesleyan Teachers, Thomas G. Porter
Western Evangelical Seminary Theses
Church history has revealed that the very existence and influence of a given religious organization has depended largely upon the force and efficiency of its educational system. In the final analysis, the upward and increasing tread to liberalism and modernism in this century has been a direct result of an efficient educational program. On the other hand, the fundamental truths that Christ wanted the people of all generations to hear, accept, and live by have also been handed down to the present through a process of education. In both cases, effective education has been brought to pass through effective teaching; …

The Quaker Pastorate, Lorton Heusel
Historical Quaker Books
The 1956 Quaker Lecture of Indiana Yearly Meeting.
The pastoral system in the Society of Friends came as such a radical departure from traditional practices that it seemed to many sincere Friends to be a device of the Devil to destroy the identity of the sons and daughters of George Fox.
Experience has shown that it is not easy to resolve differences within or between groups when misunderstandings are nurtured on dogmatic assertions. The strong feelings engendered by the Great Separations of over a century ago drove t he various branches of Friends to such extremes that each branch felt …
George Fox's Concept Of The Church, Arthur O. Roberts
George Fox's Concept Of The Church, Arthur O. Roberts
Arthur O. Roberts Collection
Arthur Roberts' dissertation (Boston University, 1954)
Abstract:
The purpose of this study is to determine the significance of George Fox's concept of the Church for his doctrinal teachings and for his work as a religious leader in seventeenth century England. Literature in the field o early Quakerism, extensive and varied though it is, has neglected formulation of Fox's views on the basis of such a dominant ideal. The present study is based primarily upon the printed, collection of Fox's works. During the Interregnum, England struggled for authority and for unity. Fox was part of the radical wing of the Puritan …

It is the duty of the Executive Committee to determine the use of this money and the Central Committee submits this recommendation: (1) that the gift be made a continuing memorial to these dear friends and (2) that the memorial be in the form of a lectureship for the Five Years Meeting, and, as it may direct, to …
Some Milestones Of The Spirit, William H. Richie
Some Milestones Of The Spirit, William H. Richie
Historical Quaker Books
Of making many books there is no end," declared wise old Solomon; but he also said that words from the wise would be as "goads" for correction, and "as nails fastened" to help settle one's convictions as to truth; thereby others would be "admonished." This has been the basis of the inward urge of the Spirit to put into writing personal experiences which have been milestones of spiritual growth. It is only with the hope and the prayer that this record may be illuminating and helpful to other pilgrims on life's pathway that this record has been written.
The Lord …
