The Communal Dimensions Of Birthing Imagery In Paul's Epistles, Mary K. Schmitt Apr 2017

The Communal Dimensions Of Birthing Imagery In Paul's Epistles, Mary K. Schmitt

Faculty Publications - George Fox School of Theology

"Paul's birthing imagery operates metaphorically in ways that correspond to John Wesley's phrase "new birth;' and careful examination of Paul's metaphors indicates important avenues for reframing some of the conversation around new birth in the Wesleyan tradition."

"Get On The Cart!" Wesleyan Discipleship In An Age Of Endemic (Chapter 15 Of Thinking Theologically About Mass Incarceration), Benjamin Hartley, Glen Alton Messer Ii, Kirsten Sonkyo Oh Jan 2017

"Get On The Cart!" Wesleyan Discipleship In An Age Of Endemic (Chapter 15 Of Thinking Theologically About Mass Incarceration), Benjamin Hartley, Glen Alton Messer Ii, Kirsten Sonkyo Oh

Faculty Publications - George Fox School of Theology

Excerpt: "Fyodor Dostoyevsky once said that the so,ul of society "can be measured by its prisons."1 If that is true, then the soul of society in the United States is sick. The statistics on mass incarceration provided elsewhere in this volume illustrate the endemic nature of the problem much like epidemiological data shows the occurrence of a disease, but the stories from prisoners and their families-which the three of us have heard and told-show even more poignantly the depth of the wounds caused by the tragedy of incarceration that defies Christian virtues in this country. We pray this chapter will …

Becoming The Real Deal: Building A Life Of Integrity, Howard R. Macy Apr 2014

Becoming The Real Deal: Building A Life Of Integrity, Howard R. Macy

Faculty Publications - George Fox School of Theology

The Beane Lecture, given at William Penn University in Oskaloosa, Iowa April 1, 2014.

From the conclusion: "As we choose to persist in the habits of truth-telling, transparency, and trustworthiness, we can build lives of integrity. We can be “the real deal.” I could make a strong case for doing this based on biblical teaching. But frankly, I think that almost universally we want integrity in our life together, in our relationships, in our business and agreements with one another, in our leadership, and in our courts. We like people who tell the truth, who are genuine, and who we …

Charles Cullis, Gaetano Conte, And The Reconfiguration Of The Evangelical Holiness Movement In Boston, 1860-1905, Benjamin Hartley Jan 2011

Charles Cullis, Gaetano Conte, And The Reconfiguration Of The Evangelical Holiness Movement In Boston, 1860-1905, Benjamin Hartley

Faculty Publications - George Fox School of Theology

Excerpt: "In contrast to the presenters before and after me, my presentation focuses on the lives of two individuals rather than one. Charles Cullis (1833-1892) and Gaetano Conte (1859-1917) both represent a kind of “new beginning” for some sectors of Protestant religion in Boston and thus fit particularly well into our panel’s attempt to explore the somewhat paradoxical theme of “strangers in a strange land” of New England. I’ve chosen these two figures because of their influence in re-shaping the evangelical movement in Boston and their relative obscurity in spite of the fame they both shared during their own day. …

"George Fox University" In Founded By Friends: A Collection Of Essays On The Quaker Colleges In America, Paul N. Anderson Jan 2007

"George Fox University" In Founded By Friends: A Collection Of Essays On The Quaker Colleges In America, Paul N. Anderson

Faculty Publications - George Fox School of Theology

Excerpt: "George Fox University is owned by Northwest Yearly Meeting, which appoints all its trustees. Four-sevenths of these must be Friends, and this relationship keeps the institution close to its parent religious body. This being the case, a high degree of interaction exists between Northwest Yearly Meeting and the university, and this relationship is felt to be mutually beneficial. While the number of Friends students in the traditional undergraduate program has remained between 74 and 145 over the past three decades or more (making up between 4 and 15 percent of the traditional undergraduate population), aspects of Quaker identity are …

Foreword In George Fox's 'Book Of Miracles', Paul N. Anderson

Faculty Publications - George Fox School of Theology

Most people who are familiar with the writings of George Fox know either his Journal or his letters. Some will have heard of his Book of Miracles, but few will actually have seen a copy of it, as the first two printings of Cadbury's edition were quite small, and until now, copies are found primarily in library collections.
