Change Over Time: Neatline And The Study Of Architectural History, Lisa A. Reilly
Change Over Time: Neatline And The Study Of Architectural History, Lisa A. Reilly
Artl@s Bulletin
This article discusses how the usual study of architecture from the perspective of a single moment in time, usually the moment of its creation is limiting. New methodologies make it possible to add to the current rich variety of approaches available to the architectural historian in order to consider the dynamic history of the forms we study. This problem can be resolved in part through the use of digital tools, in particular Neatline, (www.neatline.org) which allows the viewer to see and understand how a building changes over time.

Sustainable Design Strategies For Sport Stadia, Ileana Aquino, Nawari O. Nawari
Suburban Sustainability
The need to establish a more sustainable design for everyday items and for people to live a more sustainably led lifestyle is evident around the world. As office and residential building, schools, and infrastructure become more sustainably built, there is no doubt that other fields will soon follow. The sporting domain needs to be the next step in sustainable design. Sport stadia can and will play a vital role in increasing sustainability awareness across the world. There is an enormous opportunity to have stadia serve as trendsetters in innovative thinking for sustainable design.

The Transitional Museum As Urban Parasitism, Jorge Capetillo-Ponce
The Transitional Museum As Urban Parasitism, Jorge Capetillo-Ponce
Jorge Capetillo-Ponce
In a recent talk at the Museum of Fine Arts in Houston, I presented to the public an initial approach to the concept of the Transitional Museum, one that I have developed over time in collaboration with Mauricio Rodriguez-Anza and Vivianne Falco. This concept grew out of our efforts at defining the main features and goals of the new Anza Falco Museum of Art and Design, and particularly out of our struggle with the word "alternative" as an all-embracing, defining category with the necessary components to project to the world a unique and interdisciplinary style both in its architectural form …
Pedagogical Examination Of An Award-Winning Instructor’S Studio Teaching, Ji Young Cho
Pedagogical Examination Of An Award-Winning Instructor’S Studio Teaching, Ji Young Cho
Ji Young Cho
Design studio, as a core of architectural education, has been a significant topic for research in the field of architecture. However, there is little research on teachers and their pedagogical approach to teaching, such as what constitutes excellent teaching in the design studio. This may be due to the complexity of the study topic and a rigorous research procedure. Since the day-to-day education does not allow for immediate responses, it is difficult to find out which strategies, tactics, and techniques impact students’ learning and advancement without being in the studio context for a sufficient period of time. This paper attempts …

Understanding Furniture Design Choices Using A 3d Virtual Showroom, So-Yeon Yoon, Hyunjoo Oh, Ji Young Cho
Ji Young Cho
This study is a Web-based investigation that utilizes virtual reality technology to understand the factors considered for residential furniture purchase and furniture style preference. In residential interior design, furniture has significant financial and symbolic meaning. From a broader perspective, residential furniture is important to the domestic furniture industry as well as to woodworking and textile markets. Despite this importance, little is known about how consumers make residential furniture choices and what designs or styles are preferred. The purpose of this study is to understand the most important factors involved in choosing living room furniture and to identify preferences for furniture …

Color in our environment is known to bring emotional, social, and physiological reactions to people. This study is about young and older adults' emotional responses to color environments using a semi immersive virtual environment. As a theoretical framework, this study explores Japanese psychologist Kobayashi's color image scale with real-scale, high-fidelity computer simulations. There are three goals of this study: (a) to test universal applicability of Kobayashi's color image scale theory in western country; (B) to understand similarities and differences of emotional responses to color environment between young and older adults group; (C) to provide a practical framework for empirical research …

Customization And Autonomy : Characteristics Of The Ideal Design Studio Instructor In Design Education, Ji Young Cho
Ji Young Cho
Design studio is a unique type of course in architecture and interior design education, in which learning is based on student-instructor interaction and learning by doing; yet little research has been conducted on student perceptions of the ideal design studio instructor. The purpose of this paper was to identify characteristics of the ideal studio instructor from student perspectives. Three award-winning design studio instructors' studio activities were observed, and the three instructors and their 40 students were interviewed. As a result, characteristics in four categories were identified. The author argues that providing customized feedback and allowing student autonomy are the two …
The Process Of Aesthetic Education In Design Studio: A Layperson's Acculturation To The Architecture And Design Community, Ji Young Cho
The Process Of Aesthetic Education In Design Studio: A Layperson's Acculturation To The Architecture And Design Community, Ji Young Cho
Ji Young Cho
Discussions about various aspects of students' design solutions are the essential resource for knowledge in architectural design studio. One of those aspects is aesthetics. Using an empirical study of three design studios, this paper seeks to identify how architectural design studios deal with and teach the aesthetic aspects of architecture. Having spent a year of research involving observations and interviews using the grounded theory approach, the author argues that learning aesthetics in design studio is a process by which laypersons acculturate to the architecture and design community. The research findings identify design studio as a place for students to (1) …

Preserving Pullman: Historic District Becomes Illinois' First National Monument
Preserving Pullman: Historic District Becomes Illinois' First National Monument
DePaul Magazine
Pullman has long had a place in history, labor and urban planning, but the spotlight on this far South Side neighborhood is about to get a whole lot brighter. On Feb. 19, President Barack Obama announced the designation of the Pullman Historic District as a national monument. With this move, Pullman entered the National Park Service portfolio, joining such iconic American sites as the Grand Canyon, the Statue of Liberty and Mount Rushmore, and becoming the first national monument in Illinois. Pullman's history, architectural significance, and residents are spotlighted.

Foraging For The Curriculum: Sourcing Local Projects For An Integrated Understanding Of Issues Central To Practice, Caryn Brause
Foraging For The Curriculum: Sourcing Local Projects For An Integrated Understanding Of Issues Central To Practice, Caryn Brause
Caryn Brause
Historically, the profession has relied on the period of architectural internship to enable graduates to integrate professional practice issues into their design-thinking. However, as the profession looks for ways to shorten the licensure process, eliminating the timeline between graduation and licensure, it is necessary to examine how these issues may be addressed in a more multi-dimensional manner within the academy. This paper documents pedagogical research, supported by the 2013 NCARB Award, that investigates an experiential, hybrid classroom and field-based model for integrating issues central to practice in curricula. Original course objectives focused on introducing students to the relationship between concept …

Mala Lā’Au Lapa’Au: Preserving The Hawaiian ‘Āina And Mo’Omehue, Sandra Fogg
Senior Honors Projects
The study of medicinal plants in the western world tends to focus on the isolation and elucidation of natural products that have bioactive characteristics and potential for pharmaceutical formulation. However, the utilization of medicinal plants in cultures that still practice ancient medicine, such as Hawai’i and other Pacific Island nations, involves the use of whole plant parts in conjunction with spiritual rituals to heal illnesses and ailments. In order to gather a different perspective of the use of plants in medicine, a diverse investigation of “Lā’au Lapa’au,” or the Hawaiian art of healing through the use of plants and spiritual …
Renting Trouble: Current Government Policy Of Relying On The Private Rented Sector To Deliver Social Housing Is Unlikely To Succeed, Tom Dunne
Reports
A review of the history of housing in Ireland shows that owner occupancy and social housing were policy choices by successive governments. Owner occupancy was heavily supported through a system of grants and tax breaks and social housing was directly provided through local authorities at subsidised rents. In recent years policy has changed and tenure neutrality is now guiding the government’s attitude to housing. This is a significant change which has not been sufficiently discussed and has consequences which are not appreciated. Relying on the market to provide rental housing for people on low incomes and who may be in …

The Design Build Experience In The Context Of A Self-Consolidating Grout Research Project, Tanner Blumenfeld, Jordan Delfino, Deryk Izuo, Matthew Josten
Architectural Engineering
The purpose of this project was to experience the design-build project delivery method in the context of a research-fueled, procedural testing investigation. Thus, this project consisted of 3 main components each of which will be addressed in this report.
The first aspect to be addressed is the research aspect. The goal of our research was to establish a chemical understanding of how replacement of cement with pozzolans in a grout mixture affects chemical processes and resulting structural characteristics within and of the grout. This research was then applied to formulation of potentially self-consolidating mix designs to be tested in the …

United States War Memorials: The Transformation Of Design And Significance Influenced By The Vietnam Veteran’S Memorial, Victoria Quinlan
Honors Theses
This thesis examines the change United States war memorials underwent after the Vietnam War ended in 1975 and when the Vietnam Veteran’s Memorial was created in 1982. The first memorials analyzed are the Marine Corps Memorial, the Lincoln Memorial, and the Gettysburg National Military Park, which were all built prior to the Vietnam memorial. The stark differences of the Vietnam Veteran’s Memorial are then examined. The Korean War Veteran’s Memorial, the National WWII Memorial, and the 9/11 Memorial in New York City conclude the study of memorials built after the Vietnam Veteran’s Memorial. These separate sets of memorials represent most …

A Framework For Guiding The Briefing Process In Public-Private Partnerships In The Uae Construction Industry, Rauda Saeed Ali Saif Al-Saadi
Dissertations
Public-Private Partnership (PPP) is a procurement method that employs a long-term contractual arrangement between public and private sectors with the intention of developing a public facility. A PPP brief must supply information that not only particularizes the project requirements but also specifies its program, risk management, expected performance output and payment mechanism. Many challenges currently face the briefing process of PPP projects in the UAE. A uniform briefing process has not been agreed, because there is no unified tender law or PPP procurement process in the country. The main aim of this research is to develop a framework for guiding …
