Connective Ecology: Reclaiming The Postindustrial Urban Landscape, Thomas Smith
Connective Ecology: Reclaiming The Postindustrial Urban Landscape, Thomas Smith
Architecture Senior Theses
This thesis contends that by considering the urban landscape as an evolving interconnected network, much like an ecosystem, architecture can create flexible, accessible public space as part of a larger scale system which affects as well as responds to specific physical and social forces of the contemporary postindustrial city.
The Interface Of Two Extremes: Preserving The Local, Connecting To Global The Question Of Architecture In A Third World Enironment, Ella Scheuer
Architecture Senior Theses
The world in which we live is evolving at exponentially increasing speeds[...] The constant upgrades are considered to be arduous in the U.S. but it can be overwhelming for a Third World country who has only been introduced to the advances secondhand...This striving for global equality, uniformity, and at times, excessive luxury, has led to ignorance and neglect of regional character and authenticity. Understanding this, I found the need to create an architecture that embraces local heritages as well as global progress. This duality will be expressed through the language of the architecture by studying both equatorial African building techniques …

Spatial Patterns And Determinants Of Industrial Regional Growth In Mexico, 1993-2003: Implications For Regional Planning And Public Policy, Jesus Antonio Trevino
Planning Dissertations
This research investigates industrial regional growth and its determinants in Mexico from 1993 to 2003. Strategies of local economic development, usually based on industrial promotion, require knowing main determinants of industrial regional growth. The case study shows that there is no variable with a systematically strong effect for all industries which policymakers and planners might directly control. This finding warns us about generic policy designs uncritically based on outcomes from other experiences. Although these results show a complex problem in terms of regional policy, some recommendations for industrial spatial distribution may, however, be derived from this study. For instance, during …
Ethics In Architecture: The Application Of An Ethic Of Care In The Design Of A Cancer Treatment Center, Emily Lynn Hardin
Ethics In Architecture: The Application Of An Ethic Of Care In The Design Of A Cancer Treatment Center, Emily Lynn Hardin
Masters Theses
The project chosen for this thesis is a healthcare facility, specifically a Cancer Treatment Center, as it is a paradigmatic project for application of an ethic of care. Moreover, healthcare facilities are not given due attention in architectural discourse and education despite the importance of their role in society. While healthcare specific organizations have begun to recognize and research the effects of built environment on health, this newfound concern seems to be generally limited to those organizations. Broader discourse involving other related professions, i.e. architecture, philosophy, psychology, sociology, etc., could benefit research as healthcare entails not only the treatment of …

Policy Tools For Smart Growth In New England, New England Environmental Finance Center
Policy Tools For Smart Growth In New England, New England Environmental Finance Center
Smart Growth
Across New England communities have been experiencing a rapid outward surge of development away from our community and downtown centers. Effects of sprawl include a loss of wildlife habitat, farm and timber lands; increased costs of community services and higher taxes; auto-dependency, longer commutes, and increased congestion; increases in air and water pollution; a sedentary lifestyle and increased obesity; and losses to one’s sense of place and social ties.
State-level responses to sprawl have surfaced throughout New England in recent years. This report describes 11 examples of these responses, representing all six New England states and a diversity of recent …

The Re-Emergence Of Traditional Architecture In Greece: Kefalonia And Ithaka, Nicholas Patricios
The Re-Emergence Of Traditional Architecture In Greece: Kefalonia And Ithaka, Nicholas Patricios
Nicholas Patricios
The interest in antiquities in Greece began after the conclusion of the revolution that led to independence of the country in 1832. A brief history of the legislation to protect the country’s architectural heritage is traced up to the historic landmark law of 2002 that defined the concept of cultural heritage and the re-organization of government departments to achieve the law’s objectives. Beginning in the 1920s and parallel with the protection of antiquities a movement to preserve Greek vernacular architecture was undertaken that was recognized in the landmark law of 1978. The application of the laws of protection and preservation …

Celebrating the Centennial of the Antiquities Act (October 9)
For 100 years, the Antiquities Act has been used by nearly every President in the 20th century to set aside and protect lands threatened with privatization and development. The list of lands first protected under the Antiquities Act – and that might never have been protected without it – is truly remarkable. Many of our most treasured national parks including the Grand Canyon, Olympic, Zion, Arches, Glacier Bay, and Acadia, began as national monuments. All told, Presidents have issued 123 proclamations setting aside millions of acres of land under the Antiquities Act.
The Natural Resources Law Center and the Center …
