The Humane Metropolis: People And Nature In The 21st Century, Rutherford H. Platt Sep 2006

The Humane Metropolis: People And Nature In The 21st Century, Rutherford H. Platt

University of Massachusetts Press Books

The Humane Metropolis explores the prospects for a more humane metropolis through a series of essays and case studies that consider why and how urban places can be made greener and more amenable. Its point of departure is the legacy of William H. Whyte (1917-1999), one of America's most admired urban thinkers. From his eyrie high above Manhattan in the offices of the Rockefeller Brothers Fund, Whyte laid the foundation for today's "smart growth" and "new urbanist" movements with books such as The Last Landscape (1968). His passion for improving the habitability of cities and suburbs is reflected ...

Gargoyles On Glatfelter Hall, Katherine D. Anthony Apr 2006

Gargoyles On Glatfelter Hall, Katherine D. Anthony

Hidden in Plain Sight Projects

When one walks around the campus of Gettysburg College, Glatfelter Hall towers above them, as one of the College’s most commanding edifices. One takes notice of the arched doorways, sunken windows, and the giant bell tower whose occupant chimes on the hour. What one may not notice are the eyes watching from the brownstone; faces and creatures at home in the stone, surveying your every move. Grotesques and gargoyles sit in the moldings, on the window sills and at the junction where roof and wall meet, hidden from the eye that does not have the compulsion to look. These ...

Space, whether physical or virtual, can have a significant impact on learning. Learning Spaces focuses on how learner expectations influence such spaces, the principles and activities that facilitate learning, and the role of technology from the perspective of those who create learning environments: faculty, learning technologists, librarians, and administrators. Information technology has brought unique capabilities to learning spaces, whether stimulating greater interaction through the use of collaborative tools, videoconferencing with international experts, or opening virtual worlds ...

Roosevelt County Courthouse Square Improvements, Jeremy Scott Alford

Design and Planning Assistance Center - Projects

The goal of this process was to provide as much knowledge and insight as possible to the city of Portales with the intention that they would use this knowledge and this booklet as a tool to write an RFP that would get them the type of end product they want. While shifting from design issues to RFP issues it quickly became apparent that the RFP written for this project would need to be written better than what the current standard of RFP is in the state. This led me on a search for an RFP suited for this project. I ...
