Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

The long decade between the Wall Street crash of 1929 and the entry of the US into World War 11 in 1941 is notable in the history of architecture in St. Louis because modernist trends first appeared during the period. This thesis examines these early appearances. The exterior to east and south is cast with the local lava stone, recalling the usual stone walls dividing the lands and protecting the houses all over the island landscape. On top a play with two moving cryptomeria wood volumes around the impluvium courtyard envelops the rooms and links also with the traditional added wood volumes seen all over the landscape.

Properties of material: Unlike other stones, the Ooya stone is soft to touch with its softest portion- the ‘miso’- formed of soil trapped within it. It also has holes similar to a sponge with the ‘miso’ being the largest of these. Owing to these openings, the stone surface is rather broken up in its texture.
