Prepared by the Preservation Planning class in spring 2012. These design guidelines act as general policies regarding structures, additions, new construction, and site work for the proposed Lithonia Historic District. Lithonia’s proposed guidelines have been drawn to include a commercial and residential historic districts. The guidelines would serve as reference to both those included within the proposed district and outside of it. Lithonia is also included in the Arabia Mountain National Heritage Area. The guidelines would act to preserve Lithonia’s historic character.

the spatial structure of the city of Atlanta has shifted significantly as the city grew. It emerged from a pattern of colliding grids, which bridged the railroads, and an analysis of these early maps illustrated a centrally located area of dense street connectivity distinct from the spaces that are more easily accessible in terms of direction changes – where direction changes describe cognitive rather than metric accessibility. This historic structure report provided an assessment of present conditions, historic context, and recommendations for on going preservation of the main house located at Valley View Farm in Cartersville, Georgia. The purpose of this HSR is to provide the owners of the main house with a holistic examination of the structure and integrity of the house. Recommendations made are based on the Secretary of Interior’s Standards for Treatment of Historic Properties to maximize optimal long term preservation of this National Register property.

Information regarding historic relevance and resources located in the Capitol View Manor Historic District in Atlanta, Georgia was compiled to produce a Historic District Information Form (HIDF). This form is acceptable to submit locally and nationally for placement on the National Register of Historic Places. Capitol View Manor was established in 1920 and has a variety of historic building styles, including Craftsman, English Cottage, and English Vernacular Revival.

This Historic Structure Report contains the history of the three double-shotgun houses located at 493 Auburn Avenue built by Alexander Daniel Hamilton and his father, Alexander Hamilton, African-American father-and-son builders. The existing conditions of the interior, exterior, infrastructure, and grounds of the buildings are detailed, as well as a master plan of recommendations for the site. The purpose of this report is to provide a current assessment of the condition of the property, recommendations for needed repairs and options for future consideration.

The Case studies class of spring of 2010 compiled this resource material. This study focused on suburban residential developments in DeKalb County, Georgia between the end of World War II and 1970 in order to better understand the transformation of the area after the Second World War. The resource includes data on national residential trends, architectural and landscape designs, as well as information on metropolitan Atlanta. The resource was created to support the effort to preserve local neighborhoods, buildings, and landmarks by providing the historic context in which they were created.

In this paper we report an analysis of 118 urban areas sampled from the 12 largest metropolitan regions in the US. We deal with familiar measures of block size, street density, intersection density and distance between intersections. We also introduce two new variables, Reach and Directional Distance. Reach is the aggregate street length that can be accessed from the midpoint of each road segment subject to a limitation of distance. Directional distance is the average number of direction changes needed in order to access all the spaces within reach. Students from the Spring 2008 Preservation Planning class compiled and presented these design guidelines to the City of Stone Mountain. The design guidelines were meant to be used as a blueprint for rehabilitation or alteration of historic buildings and new construction. The guidelines present recommended and discouraged courses of action within the historic district. Three character groups are defined, commercial Main Street, a residential area centered on East and West Mountain streets, and Shermantown.

This piece was created to preserve the neighborhood known as Pittsburgh, located south of Mechanicsville. This traditionally African-American neighborhood is bordered by railroad tracks. This resource includes a large map as well as various smaller maps, photographs, and primary sources on the area.

Arabia Mountain is a large formation of exposed granite located in the southeast section of DeKalb County, Georgia. Historic context, archaeological information, and a survey of the architecture in the area has been compiled by the Spring 2002 Case Studies in Historic Preservation class to develop a Multiple Property Documentation Form. The purpose of this form is to be submitted for National Register nomination on both the local and national levels. The Arabia Mountain Area contains several geological features unique to the area including granite outcroppings, forests, lakes, wetlands, and creeks.

This Historic District Information form and all of its supplementary documents were compiled by the Case Studies class in the spring of 2007. It includes information on the district known as Kirkwood, as well as prints of Sanborn maps, early plattings of the properties, as well as historic photographs and newspaper clippings.
