Determining How Anthropogenic Change Filters Biological Communities And How Species Modify Their Traits In Response To Urbanization, Kristopher Warren Row
Determining How Anthropogenic Change Filters Biological Communities And How Species Modify Their Traits In Response To Urbanization, Kristopher Warren Row
Biology Dissertations
Humans are significantly altering the environment at an alarming pace, leading to a reduction in species diversity. This transformation has created modified habitats where some species struggle to survive, while a few others not only manage to survive but thrive. One of the most drastic forms of habitat modification is urbanization, which is spreading worldwide and contributing to the decline of biodiversity. Urbanization has given rise to urban-tolerant species that differ ecologically from species that avoid urban areas across various niche dimensions. These urban-tolerant species must adapt to changes in food sources, microhabitat conditions, and alterations in physical habitat structures. …
Band Gap Engineering In Ternary Oxides And Sulfides: A Route To New Photoelectrodes For Solar Energy Conversion, Fahad Ibrahim Danladi
Band Gap Engineering In Ternary Oxides And Sulfides: A Route To New Photoelectrodes For Solar Energy Conversion, Fahad Ibrahim Danladi
Chemistry & Biochemistry Dissertations
In recent years, there has been a growing interest in semiconductor photoelectrodes that can effectively split water into hydrogen and oxygen using sunlight. However, there is currently no known material that is efficient enough to be used for commercial purposes. Photoelectrodes currently have an efficiency of less than 10% in converting water under visible light irradiation. There is a need to develop an efficient semiconductor photoelectrode for photoelectrochemical water splitting that is both chemically stable and affordable, composed of earth-abundant elements and capable of operating under visible light. Metal oxides are considered promising photoelectrode materials due to their low cost, …
Fail To Plan, Plan To Fail: The Effects Of Forecasting Valence On Creativity, Rylee Marie Linhardt
Fail To Plan, Plan To Fail: The Effects Of Forecasting Valence On Creativity, Rylee Marie Linhardt
Psychology Theses
Forecasting is a central component of evaluating creative ideas for their success. Little is known, however, about variables that influence the effectiveness of predicting outcomes while evaluating creative ideas. Previous literature has shown that forecasting prior to implementation improves the creativity of final solutions and vision statements (e.g., Byrne, Shipman, & Mumford, 2010; Dailey & Mumford, 2006; Lonergan, Scott, & Mumford, 2004). The present effort empirically addresses how individuals forecast and why it leads to better creative performance. A total of 146 participants were asked to forecast positive or negative outcomes and subsequently develop an implementation plan for a creative …

Proteins play important role in carrying out a wide range of cellular activities. They are subjected to various post-translational modifications (PTMs) by the addition of functional groups such as acetyl, phosphoryl, and methyl which leads to changes in their biological functions, localization, activity, and structure. The growth of MS technology has immensely facilitated the identification of PTMs comprehensively. This dissertation focuses on mapping these changes using covalent labeling techniques by tagging carboxylic acid residues, which undergo various kinds of PTMs. The second chapter focuses on the methods designed for Affinity Purification Mass Spectrometry (AP-MS) chemical cross-linking (CXL) of protein complexes. …
Relation Between Solitary Wave Occurrence And Solar Wind Parameters During The Kelvin-Helmholtz Instability, Tyler Workman
Relation Between Solitary Wave Occurrence And Solar Wind Parameters During The Kelvin-Helmholtz Instability, Tyler Workman
Physics Theses
The Kelvin-Helmholtz instability (KHI) is an important mechanism whereby the solar wind transports energy and momentum into the magnetosphere. One unresolved topic is the role of kinetic phenomena and turbulence in mediating this energy transport. Previous studies hypothesized that the prevalence of electrostatic solitary waves, an artifact of kinetic turbulence, decreased along the flanks as the instability grew. These previous studies had been conducted using 3 KHI events. For this study, we test the hypothesis and further investigate how these solitary waves affect the local plasma with an expanded list of 15 KHI events. A combination of solar wind data …

Biology Dissertations
Acinetobacter baumannii is particularly problematic in hospital settings, where infections can occur in a range of tissues. This bacterium can endure extreme stress from various antimicrobial agents, biocides, host immune response etc. Not much is known about how these bacteria react to such high stress. A. baumannii also possesses a unique ability to inactivate lipooligosaccharide (LOS) biosynthesis, which is an essential molecule in most Gram-negative bacteria. LOS is enriched in the outer membrane and is the targeted by the last-resort antibiotic, colistin. LOS-deficient A. baumannii is highly resistant to the list-line antimicrobial. Previously, our lab discovered that a two-component system, …
Biodiversity In The Anthropocene, Understanding The Impacts Of Land-Use Change, And Species Interactions., Alexander H. Murray
Biodiversity In The Anthropocene, Understanding The Impacts Of Land-Use Change, And Species Interactions., Alexander H. Murray
Biology Dissertations
The extent of human influences on the environment and biodiversity has led to naming our current time period the Anthropocene. A primary way in which humans impact biodiversity is through habitat modification. Despite the knowledge that habitat modification is negative for many species, we still don’t understand why some species are able to persist despite habitat modification while others do not. In my first chapter I used a trait-based approach to understand what determines species’ sensitivity to habitat modification. Trait-based approaches from different regions often disagree on the importance of the same traits, and I thought climate and land use …

Breaking The Lignin Barrier With Termite Tav5 Treatment Technology (T4): Biopower And Biofuel From Agricultural Waste, Hussain Ali
Civil Engineering Dissertations
Bioenergy obtained from anaerobic digestion of lignocellulose biomass is one of the promising candidates to help move towards a fossil fuel free future. Agriculture waste has up to 90% lignocellulose content, and the eight leading US crops produce over 500 million tons of residue each year. Unfortunately, lignin is resistant to microbial attack under low oxygen conditions which normally occur in anaerobic digesters, and it often shields lignocellulose components (cellulose and hemicellulose) from decomposition as well. Traditional physical/chemical methods for destroying lignin are typically costly due to energy and chemical requirements and can create toxic intermediates (Rahimi et al., 2020). …

In this work, we present an optimal control approach for the assessment of treatments in prostate cancer. For this purpose, we use two different approaches, based on differential equations, to model the dynamics of prostate cancer. For the first approach, we use a system of ordinary differential equations (ODE) that model androgen-dependent and independent prostate cancer cell mechanisms. Given some synthetic patient data, we then performed a parameter estimation process by formulating an optimization problem to obtain the coefficients in this model. A second optimal control problem was formulated to obtain optimal androgen suppression therapies. A theoretical analysis of both …

Although a picture, GIF, or tutorial video is "worth a thousand words", every viewer has a unique perspective of which words they ‘see.’ Packed with rich meaning, these words, or descriptions, are often used to describe the ambiguity of working with materials, artifacts, and processes in creative practices. Our work reframes the traditional crowdsourced description tasks to leverage crowdworker diversity in generating a corpus of tacit descriptions. These descriptions are synthesized into a typology and describe how users communicate ambiguity and tacit knowledge embedded in unfamiliar material properties and familiar handed motions. We propose three design concepts that demonstrate how …
