The Sacred And The Secular In Clay's Quilt, Charlie Sweet, Hal Blythe Jan 2012

The Sacred And The Secular In Clay's Quilt, Charlie Sweet, Hal Blythe

Hal Blythe

n a telling scene toward the opening of Clay's Quilt (NY: Ballantine, 2001), Silas House has the novel's protagonist, Clay Sizemore, heading up Town Mountain toward the Hilltop Club, the local honkytonk. As he approaches the club, Clay notices that "across the bowl that held the town, another mountain rose up" (52). The most noticeable feature on this opposite mountain is a "marble statue of Jesus with his arms stretched out in front ... so lit up that it could be seen for miles" (52). Importantly, this scene acts as House's foreshadowing of the struggle Clay will endure as he …

Depressed Contractile Responses To Neurokinin A In Idiopathic But Not Neurogenic Overactive Human Detrusor Muscle, Donna Sellers, Christopher Chapple, Douglas Hay, Russell Chess-Williams Sep 2011

Depressed Contractile Responses To Neurokinin A In Idiopathic But Not Neurogenic Overactive Human Detrusor Muscle, Donna Sellers, Christopher Chapple, Douglas Hay, Russell Chess-Williams

Russ Chess-Williams

Objective: The role of tachykinins such as neurokinin A in regulating bladder function is unclear, but NK2 receptors seem to mediate contraction in the human bladder and it has been suggested that these peptides may have a role in the pathophysiology of bladder dysfunction. The present study investigates neurokinin receptor-mediated contractility of detrusor muscle in the idiopathic overactive and neurogenic overactive bladder and investigates the neurokinin receptor subtypes involved.

Methods: Human bladder was obtained from patients undergoing cystectomy (normal) or clam cystoplasty (idiopathic overactive) and from patients with spinal injuries (neurogenic overactive). Strips of isolated detrusor muscle were mounted in …

Literacy In The First Three Years Of School : A Longitudinal Investigation, Marion Meiers, Siek Toon Khoo

Dr Siek Toon Khoo

The ACER Longitudinal Literacy and Numeracy Study (LLANS) was designed to follow the growth in literacy and numeracy of a single cohort of students across the years of primary school. A sample of 1000 students in 100 schools formed the cohort for the study, which commenced in 1999. A linked set of literacy assessment tasks focused on key aspects of literacy was developed for the LLANS. Assessment data collected across the years of primary school provided information needed to construct a long LLANS literacy scale covering the full range of proficiency. The scale was used to measure change and track …

National Assessment Program : Civics And Citizenship Years 6 And 10 Report 2004, Suzanne Mellor, John Ainley, Julian Fraillon, Nicole Wernert

Julian Fraillon

The National Civics and Citizenship Sample Assessment was conducted in October 2004 with 10,712 Year 6 students from 318 schools and 9,536 Year 10 students from 249 schools. At both year levels, a sample of schools was selected with a probability proportional to size and then a sample of up to two classrooms was selected at random from those schools. The sample design and procedures, the high response rates (more than 90 percent) and the low levels of exclusions ensured that there was very little bias in the sample. The assessment was representative of the elements identified in the assessment …

A Standards-Guided Professional Learning System, Lawrence Ingvarson, Elizabeth Kleinhenz Apr 2010

A Standards-Guided Professional Learning System, Lawrence Ingvarson, Elizabeth Kleinhenz

Dr Elizabeth Kleinhenz

The authors note that teaching is almost alone among the professions in not having profession developed, profession wide standards and a related system of professional learning and certification to assist teachers to attain those standards. The authors argue the case for a standards guided professional learning system (SGPLS) designed to help teachers learn and grow and provide public assurances of the quality of work of those teachers who are able to meet the standards, assist in the development of career paths for teachers and teacher leaders that are based on the demonstration of excellent teaching. They discuss the essential components …

Estandares Profesionales De Practica Y Su Importancia Para La Ensenaza, Lawrence Ingvarson, Elizabeth Kleinhenz

Dr Elizabeth Kleinhenz

For more than three decades educators and policy makers in Australia have been interested in the development of professional standards for teachers. In recent years teacher associations in Australia have been developing their own standards to gain more influence over quality assurance in their profession. This paper aims to provide a broad overview of teaching standards and their use. It begins with an explanation of the idea of teaching standards, pointing out that standards are both statements about what is valued and tools for measurement. A distinction is drawn between ‘profession-wide’ teaching standards and standards developed by agencies like employers, …

Promoting Investments In Intangible Organizational Assets Through Aligned Incentive Compensation Plans, Susan Hughes, Craig Caldwell, Kathy Paulson Gjerde Apr 2010

Promoting Investments In Intangible Organizational Assets Through Aligned Incentive Compensation Plans, Susan Hughes, Craig Caldwell, Kathy Paulson Gjerde

Craig B. Caldwell

Strategic business unit managers are often evaluated based upon return on investment targets--targets that reward lower expenses and lower investments. This focus, however, may be at odds with the strategic objectives of the larger organization that require investment in organizational assets, generally large-scale intangible assets that form the basis for achieving the organization's strategic goals. Investments in these intangible assets have the potential to reduce profits in the short term but enhance profits in the long term. To encourage investment in organizational assets, organizations must align their compensation schemes with their long-term objectives. We examine the experiences of the Steak …

Evaluation Of Construction Contractor Performance: A Critical Analysis Of Some Recent Research, Rick Best, Craig Langston Jan 2010

Evaluation Of Construction Contractor Performance: A Critical Analysis Of Some Recent Research, Rick Best, Craig Langston

Craig Langston

International comparisons of construction industry performance are notoriously difficult. A recent comparative study, extensive in scope and using an innovative approach, is reviewed and questions raised regarding various aspects of the methodology adopted, the validity of the conclusions drawn and manner in which outcomes were reported. Particular areas of concern include the unequivocal statement of conclusions that are based on a small sample, and the use of data from that sample that are, in fact, no more than estimates of project performance. Attention is drawn to the limitations of the research reported and the reliability of the methods used, and …

Graduate Course Experience 2006 : The Report Of The Course Experience Questionnaire, Hamish Coates, John Ainley, T Johnston, B Guthrie

Dr John Ainley

This report analyses the course experience perceptions of those students who completed the requirements for a coursework degree from an Australian higher education institution in 2005 and who responded to the 2006 Course Experience Questionnaire (CEQ). It is the 14th report in a series that began in 1993 but it may also be considered to be the 5th in a new series of reports on the expanded CEQ because the structure of the questionnaire since 2002 differs considerably from earlier versions. Several further revisions have been incorporated into this report, such as a greater emphasis on results pertaining to postgraduate …

Building Digital Libraries For Scientific Data: An Exploratory Study Of Data Practices In Habitat Ecology, Christine Borgman, Jillian Wallis, Noel Enyedy

Jillian C Wallis

As data become scientific capital, digital libraries of data become more valuable. To build good tools and services, it is necessary to understand scientists’ data practices. We report on an exploratory study of habitat ecologists and other participants in the Center for Embedded Networked Sensing. These scientists are more willing to share data already published than data that they plan to publish, and are more willing to share data from instruments than hand-collected data.

Policy issues include responsibility to provide clean and reliable data, concerns for liability and misappropriation of data, ways to handle sensitive data about human subjects arising …

Change In The Concentration Of Employment In Computer Services: Spatial Estimation At The U.S. Metro County Level, Donald Grimes, Mary Beth Walker, Penelope B. Prime

International Business Faculty Publications

This paper models the concentration of computer services activity across theU.S.with factors that incorporate spatial relationships. Specifically, we enhance the standard home-area study with an analysis that allows conditions in neighboring counties to affect the concentration of employment in the home county. We use county-level data for metropolitan areas between 1990 and 1997. To measure change in employment concentration, we use the change in location quotients for SIC 737, which captures employment concentration changes due to both the number of firms and the scale of their activity relative to the national average. After controlling for local demand for computer services, …

Automated Algorithm For The Identification Of Artifacts In Mottled And Noisy Images, Onome Augustine Ugbeme, Eli S. Saber, Wencheng Wu, Kartheek Chandu

Articles

We describe a method for automatically classifying image-quality defects on printed documents. The proposed approach accepts a scanned image where the defect has been localized a priori and performs several appropriate image processing steps to reveal the region of interest. A mask is then created from the exposed region to identify bright outliers. Morphological reconstruction techniques are then applied to emphasize relevant local attributes. The classification of the defects is accomplished via a customized tree classifier that utilizes size or shape attributes at corresponding nodes to yield appropriate binary decisions. Applications of this process include automated/assisted diagnosis and repair of …
