BMI, a ratio of weight over height, is a culturally-biased tool imposed upon the scientific, academic and medical communities as an errant measure of obesity across ethnic - ity. Body Mass Index (BMI) relates mass (g) to a relative fat distribution with regards to height. Its genesis is from the actuarially derived and ethnically exclusive height and weight tables that promote the fictional notion of inter-eth - nic ideal weights that would be later adopted by the Na - tional Institutes of Health (NIH) as a competent measure of adiposity. Best practice, movement towards individualized medicine and deployment of effective …

Liberating Bicycles In Niki Caro’S Whale Rider And In Haifaa Al Mansour’S Wadjda, Doris Hambuch
Liberating Bicycles In Niki Caro’S Whale Rider And In Haifaa Al Mansour’S Wadjda, Doris Hambuch
CoHSS Faculty Work
Susan B. Anthony declared in 1896 that the bicycle “has done more to emancipate women than anything else in the world.” The comparative study of Whale Rider (2002) and Wadjda (2012) demonstrates that this liberating effect of the basic tool of transportation is being reinforced in the new millennium. The analysis further situates two contemporary women filmmakers, Niki Caro from New Zealand and Haifaa Al Mansour from Saudi Arabia, within the growing global network Patricia White identifies, in Women’s Cinema, World Cinema (2015), as crucial for the improvement of female directors’ conditions in a global film industry.

Representations Of Women And Minorities Groups In Comics, Laticia Donelle Marshall
Master's Theses
The focus of this research is to examine the representation of women and minority groups within comic books. Comic books are a cultural product that involves many actors when it comes to changing the representations of women and minorities. Therefore, this research focused on examining not only literary works but also the actions and contributions of producers and consumers throughout the publication of American comics. In the chapters, I examined the various representations of women, African Americans, Latinos, Native Americans, and Asians in comic books. To conduct my research on changing cultural productions, I used the method of textual analysis …

Violent Conflict And Breastfeeding: The Case Of Iraq, Vidya Diwakar, Michael A. Malcolm, George Naufal
Economics & Finance Faculty Publications
Background: This study explores the relationship between armed conflict and breastfeeding practices of Iraqi mothers. To date, the relationship between violent conflict and breastfeeding is surprisingly understudied. Especially in the Middle East, which is conflict-prone and has a young population, research on war and household behavior is critical for promoting recovery and sustainable development. Methods: This study employs a unique pairing of the Iraq Body Count Database and the 2006 and 2011 Multiple Indicator Cluster Surveys for Iraq. We use probit models to explore the association between armed conflict and several breastfeeding outcomes – whether a child was ever breastfed, …

The Deformability Of Red Blood Cells In Myalgic Encephalomyelitis/Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (Me/Cfs), Brendan Robert Schmidt
The Deformability Of Red Blood Cells In Myalgic Encephalomyelitis/Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (Me/Cfs), Brendan Robert Schmidt
Master's Theses
Myalgic encephalomyelitis/chronic fatigue syndrome (ME/CFS) is a disease that causes profound fatigue in its sufferers as well as loss of concentration, headaches, and sleep abnormalities. Unfortunately, the disease is poorly diagnosed, and etiology is not known. Although the ME/CFS patients do not show anemic readings, and their arterial partial pressure is normal, it is possible that their extreme post-exertional malaise stems from poor microvascular perfusion and oxygenation. Previous studies have indicated that the red blood cells (RBCs) in ME/CFS patients show evidence of oxidative damage. We hypothesized that the RBC deformability metrics can serve as a reliable biomarker of ME/CFS …

Comparing Levels Of Environmental Literacy Between Stars- And Non-Stars-Rated Universities, Analisa Kathleen Campos
Master's Theses
The Sustainability Tracking, Assessment, and Rating System (STARS) is a program that measures university sustainability levels. STARS ranks university campuses based on the number of points received from individual specifications such as green buildings, access to mass transit, number of environmental courses, and more. Therefore, the rank a school receives translates directly to its level of sustainability as an institution. Currently, it is unknown if there is a relationship between a campus’s STARS-rating and individual students’ environmental literacy (EL). The purpose of this project was to analyze the impacts of university’s sustainable features on student EL. Surveys were administered to …

Electrical Characterization Of Blood Clots, William Mcgrath
Electrical Characterization Of Blood Clots, William Mcgrath
Master's Theses
This work reports the use of dielectric spectroscopy to study blood and blood clots. A test setup was developed and electrode behavior was characterized with water and salt solutions. By measuring changes in electrical permittivity, trends differentiating clotting and non-clotting blood were identified. Non-clotting blood exhibited an increase in normalized permittivity at high frequencies that is credited to the sedimentation of red blood cells (RBCs) in static blood samples. Clotting blood was found to show a decrease in permittivity after some time at high frequencies. This is associated with the aggregation of red blood cells. Platelet rich plasma (PRP) and …

Disordered Eating In Collegiate Athletes: Prevalence And Relationships With Body Composition, Sofia Apsey
Disordered Eating In Collegiate Athletes: Prevalence And Relationships With Body Composition, Sofia Apsey
Master's Theses
Performance pressures and emphasis on body weight and shape put collegiate athletes at risk for disordered eating. If not identified early, disordered eating behaviors could develop into a clinical eating disorder. While such behaviors are a known problem, prevalence rates are not well established in collegiate athletes. Disordered eating may also relate to physiological changes in athletes, such as body composition and performance, although this relationship is not well understood. The aims of this research were to 1) determine the prevalence of disordered eating risk in NCAA Division I student-athletes and 2) determine if such behaviors are related to baseline …

The purpose of the current study was to examine the relationship between flexible work arrangements and work-to-family conflict. Previous research has not yet examined the possible moderating impact of personal characteristics on this relationship. Therefore, this study also examined self-control as a moderator of the relationship between flexible work arrangements and employees’ experience of work-to-family conflict. A total of 131 participants participated in an on-line survey. Results showed that those who had flexplace and flextime available to them in their organizations tended to experience less work-to-family conflict than those who did not have flexplace and flextime available to them. Furthermore, …

Association Of Food Pharmacy Participation With Type Ii Diabetes Risk Factors, Breanne Vinogradoff
Master's Theses
Food insecurity is defined as a lack of access to enough food for a healthy lifestyle and has been found to lead to higher prevalence of type 2 diabetes (T2DM). In recognition of this relationship, many safety-net clinics and food banks have introduced “food pharmacies.” The term “food pharmacy” may be used to describe a treatment model that focuses on provision of disease-specific, medically appropriate food. This observational study examined data from a food pharmacy in the San Francisco Bay Area to determine if program participation improved clinical measures of T2DM status or risk, namely glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c), fasting blood …

Antecedents Of Workplace Deviance: Role Of Job Insecurity, Work Stress, And Ethical Work Climate, Shuaib Ahmed Soomro, Yasir Mansoor Kundi, Muhammad Kamran
European Management Studies
This study examines why and how job insecurity affects employees’ deviant behaviour at work. To develop our hypotheses, we build on the conservation of resources theory. Our hypotheses suggested that job insecurity would be positively related to work stress and workplace deviance. Moreover, an ethical work climate was hypothesised to moderate the relationship between work stress and workplace deviance. Using data from 174 employees working in Multi-National Corporations (MNCs) located in Pakistan, the findings indicated that job insecurity has consequences for work stress and two facets of workplace deviance. Further, we found that an ethical work climate prevents employees from …

Factors Related To The Intention Of Starting A Business: A Study Among Students In Vietnam, Duong Công Doanh, Tomasz Bernat
Factors Related To The Intention Of Starting A Business: A Study Among Students In Vietnam, Duong Công Doanh, Tomasz Bernat
European Management Studies
This study has adapted Ajzen’s (1991) theory of planned behaviour (TPB) to investigate the effects of factors such as lifestyle, self-efficacy, social capital, attitude towards entrepreneurship, subjective norms and perceive behavioural control on a business start-up intention among Vietnamese students. By using a meta-analytic path analysis with a sample of 663 students at universities and colleges in Vietnam, the authors indicate that subjective norms do not directly affect the entrepreneurial intention but they have an indirect effect on the business start-up intention through the attitude towards entrepreneurship. Moreover, self-efficacy is seen as the most important factor in shaping the entrepreneurial …

The Evolution Of The German-Chinese Strategic Partnership: A Case Study Approach, Marian Ehret
Asia-Pacific Social Science Review
This paper examined current and future tendencies in the evolution of the German-Chinese strategic partnership. Because of current events, both countries acted increasingly aligned. The central research question is: will the strategic partnership between China and Germany supersede the American-German alliance regarding political importance? A literature review and a media content analysis in a German context, focusing on the years from 2013 until 2018, showed that German scholars and publishers evaluated the direction and potential of the binational relations as (mostly) positive. As their judgment came from a short-term observation, Oswald Spengler’s culture-historical approach was applied, as it allowed embedding …
