Representations Of Women And Minorities Groups In Comics, Laticia Donelle Marshall
Representations Of Women And Minorities Groups In Comics, Laticia Donelle Marshall
Master's Theses
The focus of this research is to examine the representation of women and minority groups within comic books. Comic books are a cultural product that involves many actors when it comes to changing the representations of women and minorities. Therefore, this research focused on examining not only literary works but also the actions and contributions of producers and consumers throughout the publication of American comics. In the chapters, I examined the various representations of women, African Americans, Latinos, Native Americans, and Asians in comic books. To conduct my research on changing cultural productions, I used the method of textual analysis …
The Evolution Of Korean Costume: Urban Korean Women's Shift From Traditional To Western Clothing In Colonial Korea, 1910-1945, Keeley E. Shoudel
The Evolution Of Korean Costume: Urban Korean Women's Shift From Traditional To Western Clothing In Colonial Korea, 1910-1945, Keeley E. Shoudel
Honors Capstones
This paper is about the fashion shift urban Korean women made from the traditional hanbok (한복) to Western-style clothing in the colonial period (1910-1945). In this paper, I argue that urban Korean women shifted their fashion from traditional hanbok (한복) to Western-style clothing because of American missionaries and internal social changes rather than influences from Japan. For this paper, I looked at translated primary sources as I do not read Korean. These sources include magazine articles, cartoons, pictures, interviews with Korean women who were in colonial Korea at some point in their life, and missionary books that were written about …
Contextualizing Filipina/O Experiences Through The Life And Lens Of Virgil Duyungan, Benjamin Huff
Contextualizing Filipina/O Experiences Through The Life And Lens Of Virgil Duyungan, Benjamin Huff
History Undergraduate Theses
This paper serves a dual purpose: to examine the world of Filipina/o immigrants and Filipina/o Americans during the 1930s in the Puget Sound region, as well as look at the life and death of Filipina/o labor leader Virgil S. Duyungan. Incorporating these two different aspects into one paper reveals how Duyungan’s experiences contextualize and highlight key issues of the greater Filipina/o community in the region at the time, such as racial identity and tensions, labor rights, corruption and exploitation, and socio-economic conditions. By utilizing a body of primary and secondary sources, such as books, journal articles, government documents, images and …

Making The Case For The Use Of The Ksu Archives And Special Collections Through Interpretive Videos, Helen Thomas
Graduate Scholarly Works
One of the challenges faced by Kennesaw State University’s Museums, Archives and Rare Books Department is a lack of awareness of both the existence of our collections and the many potential research applications that archives and rare books provide. This series of short videos makes the case to potential users as to why we collect these materials and how they are useful and relevant to a variety of research interests. Each video pairs an item or collection from the KSU Archives and Special Collections (including the Bentley Rare Book Museum) with expert interpretation provided by a KSU faculty member in …
New Perspectives On Kristallnacht: After 80 Years, The Nazi Pogrom In Global Comparison, Wolf Gruner, Steven J. Ross
New Perspectives On Kristallnacht: After 80 Years, The Nazi Pogrom In Global Comparison, Wolf Gruner, Steven J. Ross
Purdue University Press Book Previews
On November 9 and 10, 1938, Nazi leadership unleashed an unprecedented orchestrated wave of violence against Jews in Germany, Austria, and the Sudetenland, supposedly in response to the assassination of a Nazi diplomat by a young Polish Jew, but in reality to force the remaining Jews out of the country. During the pogrom, Stormtroopers, Hitler Youth, and ordinary Germans murdered more than a hundred Jews (many more committed suicide) and ransacked and destroyed thousands of Jewish institutions, synagogues, shops, and homes. Thirty thousand Jews were arrested and sent to Nazi concentration camps.

American Bolsheviki: The Beginnings Of The First Red Scare, 1917 To 1918, Jonathan Dunning
American Bolsheviki: The Beginnings Of The First Red Scare, 1917 To 1918, Jonathan Dunning
Steeplechase: An ORCA Student Journal
A consensus has developed among historians that widespread panic consumed the American public and government as many came to fear a Bolshevik coup of the United States government and the undermining of the American way of life beginning in early 1919. Known as the First Red Scare, this period became one of the most well-known episodes of American fear of Communism in US history. With this focus on the events of 1919 to 1920, however, historians of the First Red Scare have often ignored the initial American reaction to the October Revolution in late 1917 and throughout 1918. A study …

Freedom Triumphant: Embracing Joyful Freedom But Facing An Uncertain, Perilous Future, Thomas L. Tacker

The newly freed slaves had almost nothing—no money, no education, and no strong social institutions, including marriage which had often been prohibited, rarely supported by slaveholders. Discrimination was rampant and government was often the worst discriminator. Yet, somehow, they triumphed. They built marriages that were actually slightly more stable than those of white families. The newly free went from virtually zero literacy to at least 50% literacy in a generation. They worked incredibly hard and increased their income about one third faster than white workers. The newly free, anchored in their strong faith, were amazingly forgiving and optimistic. Economics Professor …

Negotiating The Intersection Of Arabic And Anglo-American Literary Journalism: Exploring Possibilities, Challenging Canons, Samah Gomaa Abou Marzouk
Negotiating The Intersection Of Arabic And Anglo-American Literary Journalism: Exploring Possibilities, Challenging Canons, Samah Gomaa Abou Marzouk
Dissertations
Literary journalism is an art form that combines storytelling techniques with the verifiability of standard journalism. Research in the field is recent and predominantly Western. Unlike Anglo-American literary journalism, there are no studies on Arabic literary journalism as a stand-alone art form in Arabic and only one in English, which examines the reasons for its scarcity. This study aims to prove otherwise. The objective of this research is to combine history and criticism in exploring Arabic literary journalism; examine it is predecessors, characteristics, motives and how it relates to its Anglo-American counterpart; and determine whether the two are fundamentally different …
“You Can Be A Good Romanian, But Not A Romanian”: A Critical Discourse Analysis Of The Romanian History Textbook Narrative, Razvan Sibii
“You Can Be A Good Romanian, But Not A Romanian”: A Critical Discourse Analysis Of The Romanian History Textbook Narrative, Razvan Sibii
Doctoral Dissertations
Employing a version of the Critical Discourse Analysis methodology that privileges close textual readings, I examine in this dissertation the manner in which contemporary Romanian history textbooks put forward an essentialist view of ethnonational identity by tracing through history the development of a putatively homogenous “proto-Romanian” entity. I seek to show how the “Getae-Dacian” and “Daco-Roman” identity categories acquired their thing-ness and their boundaries as a result of deliberate rhetorical work performed by Romanian historiographers with the help of such heuristics as “Romanization,” “ethnogenesis” and the nation-as-family metaphor. I also scrutinize how the textbooks treat the two ancient texts that …

Returning To Nature: Environmental History's Posthuman Direction, William H. Smith Iii
Theses and Dissertations
The purposes of this thesis were to (A) determine a new historiographical direction for environmental history through analyzing posthuman environmental change, (B) to present a new historical analysis of posthumanity, reinforced by scholarly accomplishes with the anthropocene, that allows the historian to discuss environmental history with humanity as a secondary character, and (C) to show how both the historiography of environmental history, as well as specific case studies of climate, infestations, and natural disasters, are able to present this new direction for environmental history. What has been the end result is that humanity will always improve their condition of sustainability, …

Women In Roman Republican Literature: The Use Of Mulier In Sallust And Plautus, Emily Conley
Women In Roman Republican Literature: The Use Of Mulier In Sallust And Plautus, Emily Conley
History & Classics Undergraduate Theses
Language and word choice are critical tools that allow an author to communicate how they want the audience to receive and think about a character or situation. Authors often will use colloquialisms or euphemisms to imply something about the characters that either cannot be said or is not appropriate to say. This is especially true of words used for women. There are several Latin words meaning ‘woman’ or ‘female’. In this thesis, I focus on the most common three: mulier, femina and puella. Because these terms can implicitly comment upon the social positions of characters, their fundamental meanings are …
The Future Is Non-Binary: Investigating The Genesis Of The Non-Binary Movement In Amsterdam And Beyond, Sky Karp
Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection
This project examines butch and crossdresser communities in Northern Europe in the late 20th century, and their transformation into the non-binary movement of the last ten years. This research investigates the recent trajectory of gender-diverse communities and evaluates the role of the non-binary moment in the history of gender-diverse people in the Western world. Findings come from interviews with Dutch individuals who identify as non-binary, genderqueer, or otherwise outside of the gender binary, as well as periodicals and other materials related to crossdresser and butch identities from the IHLIA LGBT Heritage Archives and the Atria Institute. This study demonstrates that …
Complicating The Narrative: Using Jim's Story To Interpret Enslavement, Leasing, And Resistance At Duke Homestead, Jennifer Melton
Complicating The Narrative: Using Jim's Story To Interpret Enslavement, Leasing, And Resistance At Duke Homestead, Jennifer Melton
Theses and Dissertations
In the antebellum South, an enslaved person was more likely to be leased out than to be sold during his or her lifetime. Despite its ubiquity, leasing of enslaved people is rarely interpreted at historic sites and is not widely understood by the general public. In this project, I examine leasing and resistance to slavery in North Carolina through the lens of Jim, an enslaved man leased by Washington Duke at the property that is now Duke Homestead State Historic Site. While Duke is famous in North Carolina as founder of the American Tobacco Company, he was a yeoman tobacco …
Women In Modern Medicine In India: Progression, Contribution, Challenges And Empowerment, Sharad Khattar
Women In Modern Medicine In India: Progression, Contribution, Challenges And Empowerment, Sharad Khattar
Australasian Accounting, Business and Finance Journal
Womens’ representation in most of the professions in India was been dismally low before the country gained independence. This can be attributed to the customs and traditions which have been in vogue through the centuries. Women’s accepted role within the confines of the home and seclusion from males other than the family members were two reasons which contributed to women not being part of many professions. Medicine as a profession reflected this and thus the representation of women in medicine was insignificant in the 19th and the first half of the 20th centuries. However certain measures during the period began …

Staging English Affairs In Early Modern Italy: History, Politics, Drama, Fabio Battista
Staging English Affairs In Early Modern Italy: History, Politics, Drama, Fabio Battista
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
This dissertation looks at the creation and dissemination of alternative versions of English history through the means of dramatic fiction, and contextualizes them in the panorama of the intellectual debates of seventeenth-century Italy. Staging English Affairs in Early Modern Italy studies the ways in which the reinvention of Tudor and Stuart affairs in dramatic literature mirrored the ambitions, fears, and fantasies of a century in disquieting transformation. This research documents how news and information from England entered the Italian states, how they were perceived, and what their repurposing can reveal about the potentialities of intercultural exchange. Anglo-inspired drama became a …
Consequences Of Supreme Court Decisions Upholding Individual Constitutional Rights, Jesse H. Choper
Consequences Of Supreme Court Decisions Upholding Individual Constitutional Rights, Jesse H. Choper
Jesse H Choper
The thrust of this Article is to attempt to ascertain just what differences the Court's judgments upholding individual constitutional rights have made for those who fall within the ambit of their protection. It seeks to address such questions as: What were the conditions that existed before the Court's ruling? How many people were subject to the regime that was invalidated by the Justices? Was the Court's mandate successfully implemented? What were the consequences for those affected? At a subjective level, were the repercussions perceived as salutary by those (or at least most of those) who were the beneficiaries of the …
