A Survey Of Reading Programs In Selected Junior High Schools In Six Iowa Counties, Daniel Charles Manning

The purpose of this survey was to assess the current status of junior high reading programs. Fifteen schools were randomly selected from the schools within the counties surrounding Blackhawk County. Criteria which indicated aspects of successful reading programs were selected and were subsequently used in the assessments. Particular emphasis was placed upon individualization, diagnosis, language arts integration, reading in the content areas, and on organizational structure. Visitation requests were sent, and acceptances were received from thirteen schools. During the spring term of the 1971- 1972 academic year, visitations were made. Data was obtained through teacher interview and classroom observation.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship of membership in a large or small family to the patterns of achievement as revealed by the results of the subtests of the Iowa Test of Preschool Development (ITPD). Of interest also was the study of the relationship of membership in subgroups based on both race and family size to patterns of achievement.

The problem that was considered in the study was whether the role of the school psychologist was perceived differently by elementary principals and school psychologists.

A questionnaire was developed which had two slightly differing forms, one for principals and one for psychologists. The items on the questionnaire sought to assess the opinions of both groups concerning: who is and who should be responsible for selected tasks, the effectiveness of psychological services and several aspects of authority. An Analysis Of Data And Records Of Two Selected Groups Of Students In The Context Of The Admissions Program At The University Of Northern Iowa, Jack Lloyd Wielenga

This study was undertaken to compare the level of academic success of two groups of students as they were affected by admission policies and practices at the University of Northern Iowa. Students in both groups ranked in the lower half of their respective graduating classes. Students in Group I were denied admission, and students in Group II were admitted to the fall semester 1964.

High school counselors and college registrars at 232 schools were asked to provide transcripts of records and/or completed reporting forms for each of the 185 students in Group 1 who had previously attended their institutions. This …

Many educators are arguing that if education is to be successful, classroom teachers must be able to match the instructional material for each student with that student's level of achievement. Supposedly, providing material that is too difficult or too advanced for the student's ability can result in failure and eventually a loss of motivation. On the other hand, providing material far below the present level of achievement can lead to a similar loss of motivation. According to this line of argument one of the basic tasks facing the teacher is the proper "matching" of the curriculum to the student's capabilities. …
