The Civil Rights Act Of 1875: A Failure Reconsidered, Barbara N. Luckett Dec 1972

The Civil Rights Act Of 1875: A Failure Reconsidered, Barbara N. Luckett

Student Work

The years since the Civil War have witnessed vigorous efforts, not always successful, on the part of black and white Americans to elevate substantially the position of the black American in sociey. The Civil Rights Act of 1964 was the most dramatic and significant legislation, on a national level, which attacked segregation and discrimination, but it was not the first of its kind. The Civil Rights Act passed in 1964 contained many of the same provisions that had been enacted, or proposed but deleted, in a similar Civil Rights Act in 1875. On the whole, in its impact and enforcement, …

Characteristics Of The Western Margins Of The Corn Belt In Nebraska, John Knickman Jul 1972

Characteristics Of The Western Margins Of The Corn Belt In Nebraska, John Knickman

Student Work

The designation of the most important agricultural crop in this nation would certainly and overwhelmingly find corn as the most vital to our agricultural economy. Corn is the leading crop in American agriculture both in terms of value and of the acreage grown each year. The peak acreage occurred in 1917, when 111 million acres were harvested for all purposes. During the decade of the 1950's the acreage of corn declined to about 80 million acres a year. Corn acreage had continued this slow decline in the 1960's, but a conseqent increasee in pre-acre production has kept total bushels at …

Maria Edgeworth: Novelist As A Social Historian Of Early Nineteenth Century Ireland, Patricia Neumann Shreves

Student Work

The purpose of the study is to call the attention of present-day historians to the importance of Maria Edgeworth’s “Irish novels.” Miss Edgeworth’s Significance in the field of literature has long been acknowledged. However, she is also entitled to recognition as a social historian because of the content of her novels, especially those dealing with Ireland. These novels accurately depict the social situation and lifestyles of the various classes of early nineteenth-century Irishmen. This study begins with a brief survey of the early history of Ireland and a review of the Anglo-Irish political arrangements of Maria's day. A consideration of …

The Participation Of The Richmond Negro In Politics, 1890-1900, Joe B. Wilkins

Master's Theses

This short treatise on one aspect of Negro history is the result of the author's pro'ound interest in United States history. The author's personal interest in the history of the Negro in the New South contributed to the selection of this topic.

The Richmond Negro by the end of the decade,1890-1900, was Virtually powerless politically and was ostracized from white society. Neoplatonism And The Florentine Renaissance, Donald L. De Merchant Jan 1972

Neoplatonism And The Florentine Renaissance, Donald L. De Merchant

All Master's Theses

This thesis demonstrates the correspondence between the visual arts and the literary sources of a given period in art history. During the Florentine Renaissance this correspondence lay between the Neoplatonism of Marsilio Picino and Giovanni Pico della Mirandola and the Visual art of the predominant artists; specifically, Sandro Botticelli and Michelangelo Buonarrotti. The impulse that is common to these creative minds is the Neoplatonic conception or the visual image. It is through a study or this tacit dimension that we are able to some extent to view the meaning of Renaissance art.

The Relationship Of Leadership Effectiveness To L.P.C For University Department Chairmen, Carter W. Brown Jan 1972

The Relationship Of Leadership Effectiveness To L.P.C For University Department Chairmen, Carter W. Brown

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

For most of recorded history leadership ability has been considered a simple variable linearly related to the effectiveness of a team of workers. Everyone possessed it to some degree. When a king or corporate president had a task to be accomplished, all he needed to do to maximize the probability of the task being completed vas to locate the individual with the greatest leadership skill available. For centuries man has tried to quantify this variable so that identification of good leaders could be achieved more accurately. After years of futile attempts at quantification, leadership theorists began in the early 1900's …

These three questions pose the problem that this study is designed to handle.

A Study Of Nephite, Lamanite, And Jaredite Governmental Institutions And Policies As Portrayed In The Book Of Mormon, Donald Arthur Cazier Jan 1972

A Study Of Nephite, Lamanite, And Jaredite Governmental Institutions And Policies As Portrayed In The Book Of Mormon, Donald Arthur Cazier

Theses and Dissertations

Nephite government was essentially theocratic, with both the monarchy and reign of the judges paralleling the similar institutions of the ancient Israelites. Ultimate political authority resided in the prophet. The laws were given by the Lord, and the principle of popular consent was recognized. The role of government was primarily national defense and the punishment of crime, not social reform.

Lamanite government was monarchal and despotic, with notable exceptions when the nation was converted to the gospel. The Jaredites theoretically lived under a theocratic monarchy, but intrigue, tyranny, and oppression were the rule rather than the exception.

In all three …

Dixie Wine, Dennis R. Lancaster Jan 1972

Dixie Wine, Dennis R. Lancaster

Theses and Dissertations

The area along the Virgin River, known as Utah's Dixie, is ideal for the culture of grapes. To utilize the natural resources, provide a cash crop for the Dixie communities, and make wine to be used in the Sacrament service; Mormon Church leaders called several expert horticulturists and vinters to Dixie. Great amounts of wine were produced in Dixie. The Church became the largest producer due to the great amounts of grapes paid as tithing. Wine was used in the Sacrament, and was a common drink in Dixie.

The mines at Silver Reef were the principle market for Dixie wine. …

Bayard Taylor's The Prophet: Mormonism As Literary Taboo; Calaveras County Comes Of Age; The Erosion Of Belief In The Poetry Of Clinton F. Larson, Thomas D. Schwartz

Theses and Dissertations

The three papers included in this thesis reflect my development as a graduate student during the course of my master's program at Brigham Young Universtiy. I came to Brigham Young University interested in creative writing and developed a love for research and criticism. My work in nineteenth century American literature led to the first two papers. Both deal with literary history, the first narrow in scope, devoted to a study of the significance of a single play, the second broad in scope, devoted to a study of the unifying thread of anti-sentimentalism in the writings of the major American realists. …

The Sacheverell Affair : Its Causes And Implications, Robert A. Kester

Honors Theses

The Sacheverell Affair of 1709-10 is a much overlooked event in English history. It was not significant in itself, being a rather trivial incident, but was significant for its far-reaching implications, in terms of its impact on both the political situation in Britain and diplomacy on the continent.

Martin Luther King's Position In The Black Power Movement From 1955 To 1968, Carol Breit

Honors Theses

From events in 1955 in Montgomery, Alabama, a citadel of Southern segregation practices and American rascist attitudes, the Negro Reverend Martin Luther King, Jr. was to be pivoted to a pedestal of national prominence and of international fame. By 1958 King had become the symbol of the new black revolt locally, nationally, and internationally. Black had finally found a black leader to articulate their needs and demands to white America and for themselves. King's charismatic personality and powerful oratory drew both whites and blacks to him and to this cause. To some degree he unified the civil rights movement in …

An Historical Analysis Of The Word Of Wisdom, Paul H. Peterson Jan 1972

An Historical Analysis Of The Word Of Wisdom, Paul H. Peterson

Theses and Dissertations

The Word of Wisdom was announced by Joseph Smith as a revelation from God in 1833. The revelation prohibited the use of alcohol, tobacco, tea, and coffee. Its pronouncement came at a time when temperance movements were conspicuous throughout America.

Interpretations and attitudes have changed toward the Word of Wisdom over the years. Before 1840 many Mormons considered abstinence important though Joseph Smith stressed moderation. Observance became lax as Mormons treked westward to settle Utah territory. Brigham Young stressed obedience to the revelation in the 1860's but never made observance obligatory. Under John Taylor in 1883, a Word of Wisdom …

A Proposal For Social Reform In The Reign Of Catherine Ii : Aleksei Polenov's Response To The Free Economic Society Competition Of 1766-68, Ralph Raymond Blanchard

Graduate Dissertations and Theses

Overall, it might be said that the search for the causes of gentry alienation in the eighteenth century; while contributing much to our understanding of the Russian intelligentsia, has left many questions unanswered in regard to the nature both of the intelligentsia and of the Russian social reform movement. Insofar as social critics were non-noble, un-"alienated" and active prior to the last decades of the century, they constitute a relatively unexplored chapter in the history of Russian social thought. It is this problem which provides the focus for the dissertation which follows.
