The Fate Of Hazardous Polluting Substances In An Aqueous Environment, Robert Paul Casani Oct 1972

The Fate Of Hazardous Polluting Substances In An Aqueous Environment, Robert Paul Casani

Theses

The fate of Hazardous Polluting. Substances (HPS) in an aqueous environment has been investigated using ultraviolet light. Chlorobenzene, o-cresol and nitrobenzene were used as model HPS for this study. The kinetics were followed and good first order plots were obtained for all compounds. The temperature of the reaction was shown to effect the rate. Solid insoluble and soluble non-volatile products were formed in the photolytic reaction of the three model systems.

The Aging Of Sbr Vulcanizates, Arthur Robert Leckart

Theses

A literature survey was conducted on SBR aging, Being vulnerable to attack by the forces of nature (such as ozone, oxygen, heat and light), SBR vulcanizates requires the addition of chemicals to retard aging. Phenylamines were found to be the best type of antiaging additives, The effectiveness of other antiaging additives were examined. Although the mechanisms of aging are not perfectly understood; sane theories and aging reactions are discussed.

Stability Of Large Flexible Satellite, Manoj P. Mehta Sep 1972

Stability Of Large Flexible Satellite, Manoj P. Mehta

Theses

The stability of a gravity gradient satellite with a rigid main body and elastic antennas is studied using Liapunov's Direct method. The complete conditions for equilibrium and stability for a particular class of two dimensional models are determined. Previous work restrained the analysis to elastic stability, in the small, and only for equilibrium positions corresponding to zero initial elastic deformation. Although the work presented here is for two dimensional motion, the intent is to bring forth an approach to the determination of the complete equilibrium and stability criteria in the large as well as the small. The effect of different …

Some Effects Of Temporal Coherence Of The Fourier Transform Holographic System, Ronald Antos

Theses

The objective of this investigation was to evaluate experimentally the effects of slight changes in the temporal coherence of a quasi-monochromatic source on the real images of Fourier transform holograms. The method of investigation included: (1) A review of some of the theoretical aspects of Fourier transform holography, (2) some approximations for experimental system limitations due to the coherence length and size of the quasi -monochromatic source, (3) sensitometric experimentation to obtain an adequate photographic reversal process, (4) temporal coherence measurements using a Michel son interferometer, (5) formation and reconstruction of Fourier transform holograms, and (6) analysis of experimental data. …

Manpower And Productivity In The Construction Industry, John A. Purciello Jun 1972

Manpower And Productivity In The Construction Industry, John A. Purciello

Theses

The relationship between manpower and productivity is an important factor in the area of increasing construction costs. Manpower supply is affected by worker mobility, influx of minority workers, work accidents, and training and apprenticeship programs.

A survey was conducted in the state of New Jersey to determine if a manpower shortage existed. The survey was conducted by submitting questionnaires to contractors, unions, owners, and architect-engineers.

The results of the survey indicated that a manpower shortage does exist, and that the shortage has influ enced construction costs, Furthermore, as a result of the increasing costs, indications of a decline in new …

Computer Simulation Of A Linde "Double Column", John A. Bazan Jun 1972

Computer Simulation Of A Linde "Double Column", John A. Bazan

Theses

The purpose of this thesis is to develop a Fortran Computer Program to simulate the operation of a Linde "Double Column" for the separation of air into oxygen and nitrogen. The model outputs the number of contact stages required, the reflux ratio, the heat loads (condenser and reboiler, and the five profiles of temperature, pressure, vapor flow rate, liquid flow rate, and light component composition. From this data, the proposed design can be evaluated, and the effect of varying operating conditions explored.

A Solid State Kinetic Study Of Potassium Permanganate In Alkali Halide Disks, Joseph Paul Cusumano Jun 1972

A Solid State Kinetic Study Of Potassium Permanganate In Alkali Halide Disks, Joseph Paul Cusumano

Theses

The stoichiometry and the kinetics of the reactions of KMnO4 in KCl and KIO4 in KCl were studied. The kinetics of the reactions were studied at three different temperatures to obtain the thermodynamic parameters. In addition, these reactions were studied in KBr and RbI matrices. The data was obtained using infrared spectrophotometer measurements.

The reactions all appeared to be first order with respect to the permanganate ion. The stoichiometric studies indicate that the Mn4- is converted to Mn++ and the Mn++ ion apparently catalyzes the reduction of KI4. The results indicate the …

Predictions Of Catalyst Utilization With Continuous Replacement In Multistage Continuous Reactors From Batch Reactor Data, Norman M. Feinberg Jun 1972

Predictions Of Catalyst Utilization With Continuous Replacement In Multistage Continuous Reactors From Batch Reactor Data, Norman M. Feinberg

Theses

This thesis presents a new equation for predicting catalyst utilization with continuous replacement in multistage continuous reactors from batch reactor data.

An equation is derived from experimental data for a. no-replacement system which predicts catalyst activity as a function of time. The assumption of constant inventory, constant replacement rate and perfect mixing permit the calculation of catalyst age distribution. By combining age distribution with a measure of catalyst productivity, as determined from activity as a function of time, an equation for catalyst utilization was derived. The case used to prepare this equation was where the activity decline curve appears as …

Analysis Of Decomposition Gases And Leach Water From Controlled Sanitary Landfill, Robert Gargano Jun 1972

Analysis Of Decomposition Gases And Leach Water From Controlled Sanitary Landfill, Robert Gargano

Theses

A sanitary landfill was simulated by placing "refuse" between two layers of soil in 6" by 24" cylinders. Canine nutriment was used to simulate the refuse. Once the refuse began to decompose, the decomposition gases were collected in a gas cell and analyzed in an Infrared Spectrophotometer. When gas samples were not taken, the decomposition gases were vented through a water trap (to prevent air from backing up into the system) into the atmosphere. Distilled water was added and withdrawn at two week intervals to leach out the pollutants.

From the Infrared analysis, the decomposition gases were determined to be …

Computerized Computation Of Counter-Current Extraction Problems For Ternary Liquid Systems, Albert Warren Patterson Jun 1972

Computerized Computation Of Counter-Current Extraction Problems For Ternary Liquid Systems, Albert Warren Patterson

Theses

A Fortran computer program has been developed that will calculate the number of theoretical equilibrium stages required for a countercurrent liquid-liquid extraction design problem. It also furnishes a complete stagewise material balance. Further utility can be found by using it for optimization studies. The program can be utilized for three-component systems that form one pair of partially miscible liquids, the most frequently occuring situation. The program was written for the General Electric Mark I Time-Sharing System.

The program has a practical advantage in that isothermal liquid equilibria data are used directly for calculation purposes. No use is made of theoretically …

Separations Via Semicontinuous Parametric Pumping, Edward H. Reiss Jun 1972

Separations Via Semicontinuous Parametric Pumping, Edward H. Reiss

Theses

A semicontinuous parametric pump with batch operation during one half-cycle and continuous operation in the other half-cycle was experimentally investigated in the model system, toluene-n-heptane on silica gel adsorbent. Comparison was made with analytical results obtained by the equilibrium theory. It was shown that when the penetration distance for the cold cycle was less than or equal to that of the hot cycle and the height of the column, the rate of production of pure solvent in the semicontinuous pump may become quite large relative to that in the continuous pump.

A Method Of Schlieren Alignment Stabilization Using Automatic Feedback Control, W. Lawton King Jun 1972

A Method Of Schlieren Alignment Stabilization Using Automatic Feedback Control, W. Lawton King

Theses

An investigation of the application of feedback control to schlieren system alignment stabilization is presented. A feedback control system was designed with the necessary sensors and actuator to maintain the knife edge alignment of a schlieren system. The feedback control system's performance when subjected to controlled disturbances was evaluated. The results indicated that the approach is feasible.

Statistical Separation Of Objects In Shadows From Objects In Daylight In An Aerial Scene, David Valvo Jun 1972

Statistical Separation Of Objects In Shadows From Objects In Daylight In An Aerial Scene, David Valvo

Theses

Objects photographed in an aerial scene are ordered into frequency histograms in terms of log exposure on the film. A statistical analysis shows that each distribution actually contains two separate distributions; one of objects in daylight, the other of objects in shadows. The difference is due to a variation in apparent luminance of the objects. For example, as an asphalt road passes in and out of a shadow, its absolute reflectance doesn't change but its apparent luminance does. It is also shown that the ratio of the derived shadow distribution to the daylight distribution is exactly the same as the …

A Study Of The Influence Of Iodide Released During Development On The Course Of Development, Barry Britton Jun 1972

A Study Of The Influence Of Iodide Released During Development On The Course Of Development, Barry Britton

Theses

The Influence of iodide released during development on the course of development was Investigated by transferring known amounts of iodide to Kodak Panatomic X Film and Eastman Fine Grain Release Positive Film (Cine Positive) after exposure and before development. Iodide was transferred to the films being tested by soaking dry Bimat web material in potassium iodide solutions and contacting this to the film for fifteen minutes. The transfer of iodide in the Bimat to the film being tested was found to be essentially complete. The iodide reacted with the grains to convert silver bromide to silver iodide. The silver iodide …

An Investigation Of The Mechanism Of Emulsion Stabilization By 4-Hydroxy-6-Methyl-1,3,3a,7-Tetraazaindene, Eddie Rising Jun 1972

An Investigation Of The Mechanism Of Emulsion Stabilization By 4-Hydroxy-6-Methyl-1,3,3a,7-Tetraazaindene, Eddie Rising

Theses

There is considerable speculation in literature as to the mechanism of photographic emulsion stabilization by 4-hydroxy-6-methyl-1,3,3a,7-tetraazaindene, (Aza). Aza is important as a stabilizer because, unlike the heterocyclic mercaptans, it causes no desensitization when the emulsion is processed in the commonly used MQ developing agents. The mercaptans are strongly adsorbed, whereas Aza is weakly adsorbed on silver halide. Therefore, there has been speculation that the stabilization mechanism of Aza is distinctly different from that of the mercaptans. For this work, Aza was tested as an antifogging agent and development restrainer along with KBr, as a reference, in two developers which function …

Image Spread Characteristics Of Vesicular Films, Ira Long, Alan Turner Jun 1972

Image Spread Characteristics Of Vesicular Films, Ira Long, Alan Turner

Theses

An altered Bausch and Lomb metallograph, in conjunction with a 150 watt high-pressure Xenon-arc lamp, was used to image 50µm uniformly illuminated round spots on several vesicular emulsions and a silver emulsion to determine image spread characteristics with increasing exposure times. Vesicular films tested include Kalvar Types 16, 143, 163, and 164, a sample of Xidex Blue and a high resolution aerial film. It was found in all cases that image spread was more profound in vesicular films than in the silver film tested. It was also found that ten minute and twenty minute periods of time between exposure and …
